agree with Jay C, just bring 9900 and if they ask you if you have more than 10K on you, simply say "No".

If they search you and find the money, like zero chance of them wanting to search you, but if they do just explain it.

And get yourself a neteller debit card in case you need more money there :103631605

traveled to Cancun in 03' with 22k and never reported it. Put it throughout my luggage. I was goin to party but also to look at some property in Playa del carmen. I figure that the search of luggage is so low in Mexico that its a good chance that they'll never even know. The canadian border is something totally different.hope this helps. apple

Don't do that, if you get caught with over 30k I believe it is, that is reason to put you in jail until you give them a good reason why you have the cash. If you are going to buy something down there like property you use a bank wire. I bought property down there and have paid many fees on it and surely wouldn't be crazy enough to bring cash down to do it.

Think about it Journey, if you go into Mexico by land what legitimate purchase could you possibly be making with $10k or more in cash? I can't think of any in Mexico. No one down there with any resources doesn't carry cash either, its way too unsafe. The only thing someone goes down there with that kind of cash to buy is likely buying drugs of some sort.

Bill I didn't mean taking 10k into Mexico....I meant 10k as far as that magic figure that gets reported ...I should have been more clear, 10k in cash isn't that much really, we always hear about how a bank must report any amount over 10k in cash, blah blah blah...Its been this way for a long time, 10k isn't what it was 20 years ago.

I should have been more clear....

I believe it was Peterson who was headed to Mexico with about 8 dimes and e all know what happned to him.

10K is even less at the Canadian border since it's Canadian dollars, or about $8200 US today.

I would think that if you are carrying most of it in negotiable travellers checks and can give a reasonable answer regarding why you travel with such an amount than I would not worry.

I have heard stories about police in Southern States confiscating money found on itinerant poker players, arguing that it must be the proceeds of crime. So I would always try to have most in recoverable travellers checks.
How about money orders instead of travelers checks?
