We don't want to grow up so fast, say 'stressed' girls

http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/news/article-1034793/We-dont-want-grow-fast-say-stressed-girls.html

Girls are being psychologically damaged by the pressure to grow up too quickly, researchers say.

Sexual images in adverts and teenage magazines are contributing to mental health problems such as eating disorders, panic attacks and self-harming, the study found.

Girls as young as ten said that the social pressure to grow up was among the greatest influences on their wellbeing.

They felt they had to wear clothes which made them look older, and they had to deal with sexual advances from boys, according to the study by the Girl Guides.

Concerns were also raised over magazines and websites which tell youngsters they should lose weight, wear make-up or even consider plastic surgery.

Two-fifths of girls polled said they felt worse about themselves after looking at pictures of glamorous models, pop stars or actresses.

One said: 'When I was eleven I read a teenage magazine for the first time and that is when it kind of clicked - "I should be like this".'

The youngsters told researchers that they faced an ever-growing checklist of appearance and behaviour 'ideals' which led to stress and anxiety.

Bullying and friendship breakdown were also major factors in girls' emotional difficulties, according to the study, which was carried out in conjunction with the Mental Health Foundation charity.

Alarmingly, the survey found that self-harming was perceived as normal behaviour - as long as it occurred infrequently.

Two-fifths of those surveyed knew someone who had self-harmed and almost the same number knew someone who experienced panic attacks.

One girl said: 'I think cutting your arm the first time you do it is OK - it might just be stress.'

A third of those questioned said they had a friend with an eating disorder.

The report, called A Generation Under Stress?, was based on focus groups involving 54 Guides between the ages of ten and 14, as well as an online survey of 350 girls aged ten to 15.

It warned that youngsters were under pressure from a 'new generation of potential triggers for mental health problems' as well as longstanding issues such as family breakdown and exam stress.

Newer pressures included premature sexualisation, commercialisation and alcohol misuse.

The resulting mental health difficulties risked damaging girls' prospects and alienating them from their families and friends, the report warned. Chief Guide Liz Burnley said: 'Young girls today face a new generation of pressures that leave too many suffering stress, anxiety and unhappiness.

'All of us who care about young women have a part to play in helping them find a way through these conflicting demands.'

Dr Andrew McCulloch, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, added: 'We are forcing our young people to grow up too quickly and not giving them the spaces and experiences they require to be safe and confident.'

I find it interesting that child labor is considered a grave human rights violation -- everywhere except in the Hollywood film industry, television, and mass print media.

Ok Joe C so youre saying the Repubs are ALL Conservatives & the Democrats are ALL Liberals... How bout the people get a happy medium so to speak (Im just as Conservative as you are but party affiliation is a sign of weakness in my opinion) http://www.betterimmigration.com/candidates/2006/prez2008.html Take a look at this guy of course hes not going to win (but maybe he will) but I will vote for this guy because I think Immigration & population control in the USA is the biggest issue we face & all the other stuff will somehow work itselfout no matter who gets elected but if a Dem or Repub gets in there it will be gridlock & more of the same do you agree? Is gridlock in the government really getting our moneys worth?...They want more productivity in Business & Industry so why should the Govt be any diffrent? My guy might not win but I still get my message across so for me its a win/win proposition. http://baldwin08.com

Yes, they are. They may not be on the micro in their private lives, but that's irrelevant. On macro when liberals vote for Democrats that's exactly what ends up happening.

Republicans nominate strict constructionist judges like Roberts, Alito, Thomas, Scalia up and down the circuit, while Democrats counter with judges like Paul Stevens and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

You can't say you're for family values while the party you support quietly nominates judges who want gay leaders in the Boy Scouts, child prostitution, support Roe v. Wade and Engel v. Vitale (a landmark SC case in 1962 that determined it is unconstitutional for state officials to compose an official prayer and require its recitation in public schools)...just to name a few issues...

Whether people admit it or not, these issues DO impact our society and culture.

You're entitled to your opinion.

I'm not throwing my vote away and allowing BO to win -- simple as that. The Republicans could nominate crash test dummy -- which come to think of it, would be better than McCain -- I'd still vote for the guy with an 'R' next to his name because the Republican brand represents the values I stand for.

The fact is, all a third party ends up doing is giving the presumptive loser a victory. (See 1992: George H.W. Bush vs Ross Perot vs Bill Clinton)

Let's not make THAT mistake again.

What does this have to do with liberals?

This is Corporate America, and isn't that usually more associated with conservatives?

Not at all, corporate america plays both sides of the coin perfectly

first they will war profiteer then they will perpetuate anti war propaganda and profit from it; win/win

just one example
