Next to the Denver Broncos, Jim McIngvale had the worst Super Bowl loss.

The CEO of Houston-based Gallery Furniture lost $7 million on a promotion that promised to give customers who shopped at his stores their money back if the Seattle Seahawks won Sunday.
But when contacted Monday, McIngvale said he was "thrilled."
In the days leading up to the Super Bowl, Gallery Furniture flipped a coin to determine that the customers would be rooting for the Seahawks while the store would be rooting for the Broncos.
Anyone who spent more than $6,000 and had their furniture delivered by kickoff Sunday would get a full refund if Seattle won. Roughly 1,000 people bought enough to be eligible for the promotion with an average bill of $7,000, and McIngvale said one customer will get $30,000 back as a result of his big purchase.
Companies usually protect themselves from losing big money through promotions like this by taking out insurance, but McIngvale said the gambler in him prevents him from doing that. He acknowledges that losing the money increases the value of the promotion as it further helps his brand break through the clutter and get more media attention.
"Doing a promotion like this creates affinity, creates trust with the customer, makes you relevant," said McIngvale, who is nicknamed "Mattress Mack" and has been known in the marketing community for his renegade promotions. "We already have people sending us videos of them jumping up and down celebrating, so I have no doubt that what we will lose is already worth it to our business."
McIngvale, whose stores have been in business for 32 years, still says $7 million is a significant hit. He said it represents roughly 5 percent of the company's annual revenues.
Customers who want to get their money back will have to wait. The company will have two "refund parties," one Feb. 9 and one Feb. 23.

I wish I would have heard about this.
I need to buy about 15k worth of furniture.
I would have drove to Houston and rolled the dice on that.

You could take Denver for 7500 and get the furniture half price no matter what the outcome.

FYI he has done this for the last few years....lost 600k for the AFC and NFC championship game 2 weeks ago

HOUSTON -- Gallery Furniture and its owner Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale had a promotion about the NFL's conference championship games that worked too well.

The commercial promised to give customers back their money if they bought more than $5,000, had it delivered before the start of the first game and guessed the winning teams headed to the Super Bowl.
More than 100 customers got it right and Mattress Mack is now in the process of refunding $600,000!
"I took a deep breath and gulped in my throat," he explained. "Six hundred thousand dollars of free furniture. Eighty percent of the customers were smart and picked the right teams."
Troy Moreland in Cypress splurged and spent $12,000 on two bedroom sets. He also guessed the two winning teams and can't believe he gets the furniture for free.
"I literally ran out the door screaming that we won because all of our neighbors knew we were doing it," said Moreland.
Mattress Mack said that he and a few employees came up with the idea but never expected so many to guess correctly.
"We're getting ready to give back $600,000 and it will hurt the bank account but will make those customers account happy," he said.
"We're thinking about doing it for the big game but haven't decided yet," said Mattress Mack.

Doesn't seem so bad when the company annually brings in 140 mil

One thing to think about is how much money did he bring in the first weekend when you had to spend 5,000 and guess the winner of two games? Would think that atleast half the people were wrong and ended up not getting anything for free. So he gave away 600,000 and another 600,000 was purchased and not refunded. So essentially it was almost like a "buy one get one free" sale. I would go on a limb a say the number of loosers was probably closer to 60%.

Great business move. All of this is free advertising. He's gonna have people driving from 6 hours away to buy furniture from him. The money looks big but it's 5% of his revenues, and it's a tax loss. Shit, as long as his prices are competitive I'd buy from him even if it wasn't a promotion because it sounds like he's a cool guy.
