New London - Lindsay Whalen was sporting a Beastie Boys T-shirt at practice Saturday and a walking boot on her right foot.
Relax, Connecticut Sun fans - Whalen is going to be OK.
Whalen sprained her ankle when she stepped on the side of teammate Asjha Jones' foot during Friday's win at Atlanta. She won't play today against the Seattle Storm, but said she doesn't expect to be sidelined long.
”It's kind of better than when I first twisted it,” said Whalen, who left practice early for a magnetic resonance imaging test. “It's OK. I've already gotten a lot of treatment today and I'm going to continue (treatment) probably a couple of more times.”
Whalen said she would have played today if it were a playoff game. The Sun secured a playoff berth Friday, so although they're playing for seeding, there's no need for her to push things right now.
”It's sore, but it doesn't feel terrible,” Whalen said. “I'm familiar with ankle injuries. I've definitely had worse.”
The Sun have enough point guards to cover for Whalen. Jamie Carey has backed up Whalen the last four seasons, Erin Phillips has international experience and rookie Ketia Swanier has had some starts.
”The other people get their chance to play some (more) minutes,” Thibault said. “It's why we've had this many point guards, for situations like this.”
Seattle is dealing with injuries of its own. Star forward Lauren Jackson had arthroscopic surgery on her right ankle on Aug. 28 in her native Australia and hopes to return in a few weeks.
Swin Cash, the Storm's other star forward, has played with a herniated disk in her lower back since last season and had a cortisone shot during the Olympic break. She played 18 minutes in Thursday's 66-49 win at the Houston Comets and may need surgery. Cash intends to play today. ”I'm just taking it day by day,” Cash said. “You would like for things to be better, but that's not my focus. I still have to get out there in play.”
