Sunday's Plays:
20 Dime –
PADRES (With Peavy as listed pitcher)
Take the Padres today over the Red Sox behind Jake Peavy.
This game features one of the best, if not the best, pitching matchup of the season. Josh Beckett has been tremendous for Boston but I don’t see him upstaging Peavy today.
Peavy has the second-best ERA in all of baseball and leads the NL in strikeouts. He's 6-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his last nine outings and has allowed just one home run all season.
If Boston thought they had it tough yesterday against Chris Young, wait until they get a load of Peavy today.
The Red Sox have scored just three runs and recorded 12 hits, with no homeruns, in the first two games of the series. Petco Park is built for pitchers and the Red Sox are going to sputter again today against Peavy.
Take San Diego as the small home chalk for the win.
5 Dime –
ROCKIES (With Fogg and McGowan as listed pitchers)
Take the Rockies today as the small road dog for the win over the Blue Jays.
Colorado is trying to avoid the sweep here today and they’ve got the perfect pitcher going to try and slow the Toronto offense down.
Josh Fogg has won two straight, limiting the Yankees to one run and four hit in seven innings in his last start on Tuesday.
Toronto will start Dustin McGowan and he was rocked in his last start, giving up six runs and eight hits in just 1 2-3 innings of a 10-1 loss to the Dodgers. McGowan is 1-1 with a 6.14 ERA over his last three starts.
Colorado is 10-7 in interleague play and 13-6 overall since June 1.
Take the Rockies as the small road dog for the win.
CUBS (With Marshall and Contreras as listed pitchers)
Take the Cubs for the sweep today over their South Side rivals.
Cubs starter Sean Marshall has won his last three decisions while posting a 2.92 ERA over his last four starts. The left-hander should be able to keep the wraps on the light-hitting White Sox, who are batting a major league-worst .234.
The ChiSox have lost four straight and 21 of their last 26 games.
Jose Contreras will get the start for the White Sox and he’s just 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA over his last three starts.
Take the Cubs as they grab the win and series sweep over the White Sox.
ORIOLES (With Trachsel and Davis as listed pitchers)
Take Baltimore as the road dog for the win over Arizona.
Doug Davis will start for the Diamondbacks and he’s been tagged over his last three starts, going 0-2 with an 11.08 ERA in just 13 innings. The left-hander has walked 11 batters during that stretch.
Baltimore will counter with Steve Trachsel and I expect him to bounce back from his last start when he lost to the Padres on Tuesday.
Trachsel has a good history against the Diamondbacks, going 4-2 with a 3.44 ERA in 10 career starts against them.
The Diamondbacks bullpen has been great recently, but they have also been overworked. Arizona starters have failed to reach the sixth inning in five of their last six games. The way Davis has been going, it will be six of seven after today. All those innings are bound to catch up to the bullpen and I expect it to happen today if Davis falters.
Take the Orioles as the road dog for the win.
