Prediction Machine NFL Pick:

Jacksonville Jaguars at Houston Texans Over 54

Why will the total go OVER in Jaguars at Texans?
Both Houston and Jacksonville have struggled to limit opposing passing games through four weeks. Jacksonville has allowed a 30th-ranked 8.3 yards per pass attempt while Houston sits 21st on the list with 7.4 yards per pass attempt allowed. This is a bad sign for under bettors Sunday, as the Jags and Texans both rate top five in the NFL in pass rate, with over 64 percent of their plays ending in a pass.
Not only do these teams pass frequently, but they do so effectively. Watson and the Texans have produced 7.9 yards per pass attempt (9th-best) while facing Kansas City, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore, who all rank top 11 in yards per pass attempt defensively. Jacksonville has been less impressive but still effective, sitting around league average at 7.1 yards per pass attempt on the season.

NFL Best Bets

CLEVELAND +1.5

INDIANAPOLIS @ CLEVELAND | 10/11 | 3:25 PM CDT

The Browns are playing great under their new coach. They beat Dallas more soundly than the final score indicates. The Cowboys got their points late against a cheap, safe defense. Even though they're 3-1, the Browns are still kind of under the radar. Indy has a good defense but its top linebacker, Darius Leonard, is dealing with a groin injury.

PITTSBURGH -7

PHILADELPHIA @ PITTSBURGH | 10/11 | 12:00 PM CDT

Look at their defensive stats: The Steelers are No. 1 in so many categories. And their running game is strong; they can play keepaway. And, they're fresh after last week's game with Tennessee was postponed. Lay it.

HOUSTON -6

JACKSONVILLE @ HOUSTON | 10/11 | 12:00 PM CDT

The Jaguars had three key defensive players get hurt last week. Gardner Minshew throws for a lot of yards but he's up and down. I think Houston's defense will play well. And I bet the Texans had a party when Bill O'Brien got fired. Deshaun Watson will have a big game against that Jags defense and he's due for a big win. Lay the points.

I think the wrong team is favored here. That Colts defense has looked awesome, but Indy's schedule has been pretty suspect. The Browns just scored 49 on the Cowboys, and before you remind me how bad the Cowboys defense is, they had actually been solid against the run heading into that game. The Browns O-line is just dominant right now, which makes me worry less about injuries at running back. Meanwhile, the Colts offense is not impressive at all, ranking 22nd in points per drive, 30th in third-down success rate and 28th in red-zone success rate. If that strong Browns D-line can get some pressure on Philip Rivers, I think this is game over, especially with the Colts ranking 32nd in yards per carry.

So this line was Cardinals -8 on the lookahead, and the Jets lost their starting quarterback ... so now it's -7? What kind of sense does that make? You can only explain it if you think the struggling Cardinals offense from last week is indicative of future performance, but they know they got too cute going horizontal instead of vertical. That shouldn't be an issue against this porous Jets secondary, and I'm expecting a big game out of the Arizona offense. I don't expect a whole lot from Joe Flacco, even if the rest of the offense is starting to get healthy. Cards get right here with a big win.

I think firing Bill O'Brien could open up the Houston offense and the team in general, as it was clear he lost the locker room by his failed Earl Thomas addition. But the Texans defense has been awful, and I expect Gardner Minshew to come in and score points. But the Jaguars defense is also terrible, so why won't this game go over? These pair of defenses rank near the bottom of the league in points per drive and DVOA while allowing about 30 points per game. Against two solid offenses, it seems to me we should expect about 30 from each.

Yeah, there's nothing in the world that could make me want to back the Falcons as a favorite right now. We're talking about a team that is 0-4 on the season with a horrendous defense. A team that's only proven to be good at one thing and that thing happens to be blowing games. The Panthers aren't exactly juggernauts, but losing Christian McCaffrey hasn't had as large an impact on the team as I suspected it would. I guess running backs really don't matter after all. Either way, we're on the Panthers here because Teddy Bridgewater is 19-5 ATS as a dog (14-2 ATS as a road dog), and the Falcons are only 18-33 ATS as a favorite under Dan Quinn.

Some might suspect that since the Texans fired Bill O'Brien, things will magically improve. I am not one of them. Sure, we might see a dead coach bounce this week as the Texans finally got the BOB weight off their back, but it's not like the roster is any different. While not spectacular, Bill O'Brien's gameday coaching is not what put the Texans in this mess. It was the roster he put together (or deconstructed). Nothing I have seen from the Texans in 2020 makes me comfortable with the idea of taking them as nearly a touchdown favorite in this spot. They might get their first win of the season on Sunday, but it won't be a comfortable one.

One of my favorite traditions has always been fading Kirk Cousins in spotlight games. He's not just bad on Monday Night Football! Monday nights, Sunday nights, late Sunday afternoons, the man crumbles in the spotlight. And going against Russell Wilson? This is easy.

Minnesota is coming off of its first victory of the season, thanks in part to RB Dalvin Cook, who leads the NFL in rushing. Seatlle's ability to stay active around the line of scrimmage will slow down the Vikings run game enough to put the ball in Kirk Cousins hands more often than the Vikings want. If Cousins can't get into a groove coming off of play action, he will struggle. Look for that to be the case in Seattle.

The Colts have rebounded nicely after their Week 1 loss to Jacksonville. They enter this matchup against the Browns winners of three straight. Unfortunately for them, this will be the best offense they've faced all season long. Also, the Browns' defense has shown the ability to both pressure the QB and turn the ball over. Cleveland is playing a good brand of football right now, and it'll have the Browns playing winning football on Sunday.

So far this season, the New York Giants have failed to score more than 20 points in any single game. That seems a bit absurd in this era of offensive football. Their defense has played well early in games, but because of an offense that can't sustain drives, the opponent is able to wear down their defense. The Cowboys' offense has no problem pushing the tempo and pace of the game, and they can score in bunches.

Jets QB Sam Darnold won't play in this game due to a shoulder injury. That means Joe Flacco will get the nod as their starting quarterback against a Cardinals defense that is in desperate need of a get-right game. Offensively, the Cardinals need to get back to the efficient type of ball they were playing earlier in the year. This game will provide the perfect remedy for both sides of the ball for the Cardinals.

Houston fired coach Bill O'Brien after an 0-4 start. The Texans were close to knocking off the Vikings last weekend and, to me, are not that far off. Jacksonville's passing offense has been very inconsistent to start the season. And it's that one-dimensional approach that will have the Texans feasting on RB James Robinson, and making Gardner Minshew try to beat them throwing the football.

L.A. RAMS @ WASHINGTON | 10/11 | 1:00 PM EDT
YESTERDAY 12:57 PM
With the benching of Dwayne Haskins in favor of Kyle Allen, who was woefully ineffective in Carolina last year, this offense will not have a chance against a Los Angeles Rams team that features two elite players in Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey. Also, the Rams' offense will take advantage of the ineffective Safeties for Washington. This feels like a blowout waiting to happen.

The Carolina Panthers have won two straight games and a big reason why is because of a young defense that's improving with each passing week. The same can't be said about a Falcons' defense that seems to get worse. Plus, they enter this game against Carolina a bit banged up on that side of the ball as well. The Panthers' offense is firing on all cylinders and should continue to have success against Atlanta.

The Over has been hitting at almost 60 percent this season, which is why we’ve got a total as high as this one. However, the later 4 p.m ET games have seen the Over go only 2-11-1 through Week 4. The 49ers have stayed Under in the two games they didn’t play the Jets or Giants, their injuries keep piling up and now the QB situation is murkier than ever. The San Francisco defense and offense will keep this a low-scoring game. Under is the play.

The Browns have come alive in their last three games after losing the opener 38-6 at Baltimore. They scored 34-points or more against the Bengals, Washingtons and Cowboys, who have three wins combined. They’ll be playing the No. 1 defense this week that allows the fewest passing yards. I look for the Colts offense to dink and dunk enough down the field to chew time off the clock and frustrate Baker Mayfield. Colts to cover.

I’m backing the Eagles for more reasons than just the fact that several key injured players should be able to Sunday. It’s because Carson Wentz took control of the team and put it on his back at San Francisco no matter how bad his receiving corps was. He ran for first downs, taking no chances. I look for the Eagles and a defense that leads NFL with 17 sacks to give the Steelers all they can handle and get the cover, possibly win, as the Steelers had their most inconvenient bye last week.
