KEY STAT: ADO Den Haag lost just one of their final 12 Eredivisie games last season, and that was to champions Ajax

EXPERT VERDICT: Feyenoord did superbly to finish second last season but their squad was completely dismantled in the summer and manager Ronald Koeman is now at Southampton. ADO have a new synthetic playing surface and could get a shock victory.

RECOMMENDATION: Den Haag

KEY STAT: Rangers haven’t failed to find the net in any of their last 40 league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Hearts are going to Ibrox at arguably the best possible time with Ally McCoist trying to find his best side following a poor Challenge Cup win against Hibs. Robbie Neilson’s Hearts have been rebuilt since relegation and Osman Sow, with four in four in pre-season, is part of a pacy outfit who could cause the Championship jollies trouble.

RECOMMENDATION: Hearts

KEY STAT: Ajax conceded just nine goals in 17 home Eredivisie matches last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Ajax suffered a shock defeat to Zwolle last week in the Johan Cruyff Shield but they can win their Eredivisie opener against Vitesse. Star man Daley Blind should return for the Dutch champions, who had easily the best defence in the league last season.

RECOMMENDATION: Ajax to win 2-0

KEY STAT: Man City have won four and lost one of their last seven matches against Arsenal

EXPERT VERDICT: This will be Arsenal’s first Community Shield appearance since they lost 2-1 to Chelsea in 2005 and they could be on the end of another defeat at the hands of Manchester City. The champions have put in some impressive performances in pre-season with an eyecatching 5-1 win over Milan and a 2-2 draw with Liverpool with Stevan Joevtic in fine form.

RECOMMENDATION: Man City

KEY STAT: Lyon have lost just one of their last eight matches at home to Rennes

EXPERT VERDICT: Rennes have shown some ambition in the transfer market but their new-look team may take time to gel and faces a tough examination at the Stade Gerland on the opening weekend. Lyon have appointed a new head coach – Hubert Fournier has replaced Remi Garde – but have a settled side and can make a winning start.

RECOMMENDATION: Lyon

EXPERT VERDICT: Southampton and Norwich have both achieved successive promotions to the top flight in recent years, and Wolves – last term’s League One winners – will hope to emulate them. Wanderers’ attacking approach saw them score 89 goals last season and they have the firepower to down the Canaries.

RECOMMENDATION: Wolves

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 5 PERFECT PIE 5/2

# 4 SEATTLE GAME 3/1

# 3 ONCE UPON A SONG 9/5

PERFECT PIE has a solid shot to take this race. Shows evidence of the look of a money-making play, averaging a solid 82 speed figure which is one of the most favorable in this group of horses. This mare has a good winning percentage in dirt sprint races. Could best this group of horses based on the Equibase Speed Fig - 79 - of her last outing. SEATTLE GAME - This mare with Enriquez in the saddle makes her a key contender. Looks very strong versus this group and will probably be one of the leaders. ONCE UPON A SONG - This mare has a very good win percent in dirt sprint races. Kubinova has sharp numbers that point to this mare to be a very strong contender.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 3 PLAYING WITH FIRE 6/1

# 7 BLACK PATCH 4/1

# 4 GOWDEN MILE 3/1

PLAYING WITH FIRE looks to be a competitive contender. Trainer has very strong win rate (22 percent) at this distance and surface. Love when any equine makes a quick turn around. Had one of the most competitive speed figures of this group of animals in his last race. BLACK PATCH - This gelding has posted some nice finishes in his last few tries. He has been running soundly and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the best in this field. GOWDEN MILE - The almost immediate return to the track points to a sound effort this time out. Is worth looking at and may be a bet - strong speed figures (81 average) at today's distance and surface recently.

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#5 LINDISFARNE (ML=9/2)
#4 DISCREET FLIRT (ML=3/1)
#8 SWISS SKIMMER (ML=12/1)

LINDISFARNE - Good trainers run fit horses. The fact that Hollendorfer worked this filly at a long distance tells me this one should be ready today. It don't take a university education like someone like my buddy Brain has to figure this one out. We have a first timer with a trainer (Hollendorfer) who is fabulous taking horses out for the first time. This horse could be tough in today's event. She has recorded a workout that is better than any of these ponies previous race times. DISCREET FLIRT - Generally, I don't like to see a filly run against the opposite sex like she did July 6th. Good to see she's back with her own sex today. Looking at today's class rating, this racer is up against an easier field than last race out at Oak Tree at Pleasanton. Here is an appropriate handicapping angle that I've used many times before. Play a filly (like this one) getting Lasix for the 2nd time. SWISS SKIMMER - It looks like Alvarado had to be more familiar with this filly on July 25th when riding her for the initial time. Back atop again today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 ESTELLARA (ML=5/2), #1 PULPIT HANNA (ML=7/2), #7 SHERRY CAGAN (ML=6/1),

ESTELLARA - Hasn't raced or had any drills since Jul 17th. Not much value on this morning-line choice. PULPIT HANNA - Difficult to bet on this runner today. Make her show you something in a sprint contest before you invest in her in a race of 5 1/2 furlongs. The sixth place result in the last event was not the best. SHERRY CAGAN - Doesn't appear to have enough positive qualities to warrant the price.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Have to go with #5 LINDISFARNE on the win end if we get at least 4/1 odds

#4 LEMON GALA (ML=6/1)
#6 MYSTRA (ML=8/1)

LEMON GALA - In her first race, this equine was beaten up badly. She should improve today. You'll be making money left and right by turning your betting money onto this jock/handler combination. MYSTRA - Always be wary of the longer priced equine when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. With an excellent workout that eclipses any of these thoroughbreds race times, this fine animal should be in contention today. First-timer has been working over this very track. I think that's a big plus in her favor. Bennett, the trainer, shows intent by adding Lasix right here. A positive sign.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 ZIP RUNNER (ML=3/1), #8 SCATTER GUN (ML=9/2), #9 ABSOLUTELY CLASSY (ML=5/1),

ZIP RUNNER - Doesn't seem to be worth 3/1 in today's event. Pass on her this time. SCATTER GUN - Just don't believe she is worth it at the given odds. ABSOLUTELY CLASSY - Registered a most unsatisfactory speed fig in the last race in a Maiden Special race on July 10th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that number.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - LEMON GALA - Getting Lasix for the second time. While getting my PHD at grad school I did a lot of research on this, and my data proves fillys run much better the second time. Don't let this one slip by.

9.0 FURLONGS TURF FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $250,000.00 PURSE

#6 MISS SERENDIPITY
#9 COZZE UP LADY
#3 WISHING GATE
#1 CHARLIE EM

#6 MISS SERENDIPITY, an Argentinian-bred entry, takes a slight class drop (-1) this afternoon, and has has produced "POWER RUN PERFORMANCES" in five straight starts, hitting the board in each of her last three "adventures," including a "POWER RUN WIN" in her last start. #9 COZZE UP LADY, a 9-2 shot, comes off a "POWER RUN WIN" in her last outing, which was the 2nd "POWER RUN WIN" in her last five starts. Jockey Kent Desormeaux was in her irons for that last win, 3 weekends ago here at Del Mar, producing more than a 1,000% return on investment in the process, and is back this afternoon for his 2nd ride, gunning for back-to-back "Circle Trips."

The Adirondack Stakes

6½ FURLONGS DIRT GRADE II TWO YEAR OLD FILLIES STAKES $200,000.00 PURSE

#6 VIVIAN DA BLING
#1 WONDER GAL
#7 EMPRESSIVE HUMOR
#4 TAKE CHARGE BRANDI

For you folks who are unfamiliar with New York State Geography ... the Adirondack is named after the mountain region in northeastern New York State that lies north of Saratoga and is bounded by the Canadian border on the north, the Mohawk River valley on the south, the Saint Lawrence River and Black River valleys on the west, and the Lake Champlain area on the east. The Adirondacks are composed mainly of metamorphic and igneous rock, and are among the oldest in the world. Adirondack Park, established in 1892, houses Mount Marcy, the highest summit in the State of New York (5,344 feet). Here in the 96th renewal of this stakes event, #6 VIVIAN DA BLING a 4-1 shot, is undefeated in a two race career ... winning both in "POWER RUN FASHION." Jockey Rosie Napravnik and Trainer Bret Calhoun send her to the post for the "Sunday Co-Feature" ... they've hit the board with 65% of their entries saddled as a team to date. #1 WONDER GAL takes a class drop (-3), and is the overall speed leader in this field sprinting at 6½ furlongs on the dirt, and comes off a BLISTERING, 15-1 length, "POWER RUN WIN" to break her maiden in her "first asking."

# 7 MYSTIC GAMBLER 6/1

# 2 LONERIDGE APACHE 3/1

# 6 RAINING BULLETS 5/1

After thorough analysis by the knowledge group, MYSTIC GAMBLER comes out as the top contender. This race may be controlled by this gelding. Just one look at the avgerage TrackMaster SR will prove that. This horse has shown us some ability in the past, just look at the 67 avg class rating. Should play well here. LONERIDGE APACHE - Marino is racking up the wins of late. Outstanding win percent makes this nice horse our choice. Look for Sifert and this standardbred to take the whole enchilada in this race. Excellent in the money percent for the trainer/horse twosome. RAINING BULLETS - The handicapping group knows that speed is the key in harness racing. This fine animal will unlock our way to a nice top prize.

# 9 DC'S PIGGY BANK 8/1

# 2 MISTER KING 10/1

# 1 HALLUCINATION 15/1

DC'S PIGGY BANK has a good shot to take this outing especially at a such a nice price. Can't forget based on TrackMaster Speed Ratings which have been stellar (81 avg) recently. This gelding has been squaring off against some of the most competitive company in this field of starters lately. Take a good look at making this horse your win wager based on high win statistic alone. MISTER KING - The trainer/horse combo statistics point out that this combination are solid in the money finishers when working together. HALLUCINATION - May be the best in the bunch here, showing competitive stats of late. Average speed is a solid 80. Good for a win wager just off the top notch prior class ratings. Have to like this harness racer.

Tioga: Sunday 8/10 Analysis
By James Witherite

DRF HARNESS

Best Bet: HE’S WATCHING (9th)

Race 1

(8) GINGER TREE LEXIE beat similar foes in her last two races, turning aside pressure in game fashion two back. She figures to be involved from the outset yet again. (6) DREAMNWILLIE has established himself well in the stalker-closer role, rallying well for strong finishes against similar foes and slightly tougher. Dependent on live cover, but capable enough. (9) CURRENT IMAGE labored late last week after a strong dispatch, but stalked along for minor shares in his two prior starts. Shows better recent form than others who have competed at this level.

Race 2

(6) CAN’T IT BE ME has been beaten by no worse than a nose in any of his Excelsior-B efforts, boasting two wins in four career starts already. Strong pacesetting type has exhibited gritty resilience all season. (5) SPIRITINTHECLOUDS rallied from the pocket to win at Monticello two back, and his hit the board in all three of his Excelsior-B starts. Capable presser-stalker. (7) INTERMIX rallied off a wide bid to just prevail at Yonkers last week. Ignore the line from Monticello, as interference took him out of contention.

Race 3

(8) STARZNHEAVEN drops down to the Excelsior-B level after hitting the board in three Excelsior-A outings. While the pace may be contested here, expect his class edge to carry him through. (7) MR FANTASY stayed on well for narrow second-place finishes in his last two. Versatile presser-stalker can figure well late if the pace ends up to be hotly contested. (4) FALCON’S LUKE held sway for a pace-setting 1:58.2 win at Saratoga last week, stepping up off his maiden win. Could potentially fuel a speed duel.

Race 4

(5) CARTOON DADDY kicked clear for a 1:53.4 pocket score against NYSS foes at Yonkers last week, keeping his sire stakes record intact at 2-for-2. Burke trainee possesses a strong speed edge. (8) AZOREAN ART is better suited as a presser-stalker, rallying off cover to win at Yonkers last week at a healthy price. Good finishing ability will suit him well if #2 or #6 presses the pace. (2) JD HE’S DA’ BOMB stayed on well for minor checks in all three of his NYSS events, coming up just short. A cozier trip can well yield him a minor share, and the potential for decent value in exotics isn’t lacking.

Race 5

(4) ARTISTIC MAJOR has been a perfect 4-for-4 in Excelsior-A events, posing a constant threat from on or near the lead. While the race shapes up with plenty of pace, it’s hard to go against this Art Major colt. (3) HOWDOILIVEWITHYOU hit the board in all four of his Excelsior-A efforts, employing closing, tracking, and pressing tactics for strong finishes. He keeps Jim Morrill, and looks to continue his gradual improvement. (5) HAYDENS LITTLE MAN prevailed narrowly in both his Excelsior-A starts after struggling on the tougher Sire Stakes circuit, but will have to contend with a more pressured pace this week. Minor consideration.

Race 6

(8) BET YOU won going away at Yonkers, and is Yannick Gingras’s selection in the race over Burke trainee Suchasenseofhumor. Bettor’s Delight son has shown steady improvement. (7) K RYAN BLUE CHIP hit the board in his last three NYSS efforts, showing good late pace while passing horses. Live cover puts him right into contention, as the race doesn’t seem to offer much pace pressure. (5) MY SPIRIT SOARS won off a pocket trip two back at Monticello, but was a victim of traffic issues at Yonkers last out against similar foes. A clear stalking trip puts him in the hunt for a minor, as he’s not lacking for closing kick.

Race 7 - Empire Breeders Classic Final - 3YO Fillies

(2) MAJOR DANCER rallied strongly off cover to win her elimination last week, drawing clear while well in hand. Lots to like off such an easy move to the fore. (3) PRECOCIOUS BEAUTY battled to a late lead in her elimination, digging in late to hold off Delightful Dragon in the final yards. She’s returning to her old form, but could be outkicked by the other elim winner late. (9) IT WAS FASCINATION may be a live longshot in exotics, holding strongly for third in a pace-setting effort last week. She’s not been prominent on the national scene, but another gutsy effort like last week’s can make her a case for tris and supers.

Race 8

(2) FREEDOMFORMYSOUL broke at the start at Yonkers last week, but scored back-to-back wins in past NYSS efforts. He’s got a clear speed edge in this group, and could control the terms from at least midway on. (4) AMERICANPRIMETIME seeks his third straight win at the NYSS level, employing pacesetting and stalking tactics in his last two. Likely to find himself in a chasing position behind a well contested early pace. (6) ONEISALONELYNUMBER earned a win and a second in three NYSS starts, and while past efforts show him involved from the outset, his best attribute may well be his closing kick. Versatile enough.

Race 9 - Empire Breeders Classic Final - 3YO Colts

(4) HE’S WATCHING battled gamely to prevail in a stretch duel with JK Endofanera last week. Meadowlands Pace winner is well defined as a presser-stalker, and shouldn’t have any trouble either making a strong middle move or kicking cover. (2A) JK ENDOFANERA battled gamely in defeat to He’s Watching in last week’s elimination, only beaten by half a length over the off going. A less pressured trip can prove to his benefit, as he’s not lacking for late kick. (1) WINDS OF CHANGE held off steady pressure for a 1:50.2 elimination win, but will have to deal with the two classic winners in today’s final. That said, he’s more than capable of stalking the pace and holding for a minor share.

Race 10

(5) SOUTHWIND MASIMO looks for his third NYSS win in as many career starts, sustaining a wide bid to prevail last week at Yonkers. Versatility is a plus, no doubt. (4) PENJI HANOVER kicked clear in a Pocono win, and seems improved from past NYSS efforts. Early involvement on the three-turn course puts him in contention, as he’s not lacking for late pace. (2) ULTIMATE G tired last week off a wide bid, staying on for second-place efforts in past NYSS outings. Can stay on for a minor with a close dispatch.

Race 11

(2) JULERICA is reunited with Jim Morrill, and could repeat his performance from three back. Inside draw should enable him to secure a tracking trip. (3) ARTZUMA finished third or better in all four of his career starts, showing good staying power off pressing-stalking efforts. Late-mile fortitude is a definite plus. (7) SOTO makes his first career start off a pair of good Meadowlands qualifiers, turning in a chasing 1:55.1 effort most recently. Could provide value in exotics.

Race 12

(1) SICILY drops down a level after a pair of decent NYSS efforts, fading late off a strong first-over bid at Yonkers last week. Presser-stalker should handle the class drop well, but may be forced into action early with a lack of pace pressure. (2) KJ BRENT was shoved wide at Yonkers last week, laboring in the stretch after said interference. Class edge should aid here. (5) THINK AGAIN is a first-time starter who comes off a 1:54.4 qualifier at the Meadowlands, showing decent late pace in a :28 LQ. Value option in exotics.

Race 13

(6) B SEVENTEEN hit the board in a pair of NYSS events earlier in the season, but was collared late upon dropping to the Excelsior-A ranks last week at Yonkers. He figures to be at or near the lead, and his class edge should aid. (4) POP ICON broke maiden at Monticello in his career debut, and battled gamely in a narrow defeat against similar foes as these in his only other career start. Likely to be involved from the outset. (2) SOUTHWIND REX kicked clear off a wide bid for an Excelsior-A score two back, drawing off in a 1:58.4 win. Past pressing-stalking efforts have yielded minor shares against similar foes. In a race with minimal early speed, he seems to factor best at the bottom of exotic wagers.
