KEY STAT: Five of the last seven League One playoff finals have featured at least three goals

EXPERT VERDICT: Some teams limp into the playoffs, while for others it is a deflating consolation prize after failing to secure automatic promotion. But this year’s League One final matches two teams who have stormed into the top six. Both teams have scored in seven of Millwall’s last eight games and that looks a trend to follow against Barnsley at Wembley.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Scotland have beaten Italy just once – in 1965

EXPERT VERDICT: Italy suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Germany in their latest friendly and are without a win in four having also suffered a 3-1 defeat to Belgium. However, Scotland failed to make the European Championship and Italy can win comfortably enough.

RECOMMENDATION: England to win 2-0

KEY STAT: Plymouth have lost one of their last seven matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Wimbledon beat Accrington Stanley in the semis and conceded only one goal in six outings leading up to the playoffs. However, it’s also been six games since Neal Ardley’s outfit scored more than a single goal in normal time, so another tight, low-scoring match could be on the cards against Plymouth at Wembley.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

Coca-Cola 600 Preview
By Micah Roberts

It's a huge Memorial Day weekend for auto racing fans as three big races happen across the world. It begins early Sunday morning with the Monaco Grand Prix, followed by the Indianapolis 500 and then closes with NASCAR's longest race of the season at Charlotte Motor Speedway with the Coca-Cola 600. What a fantastic triple feature.

Normally, I'd break down the Indy 500 as the primary race featured in this spot, but hardly anyone bets it any more so why bother. Las Vegas handles don't lie and the Indy 500 has been in a massive decline the past two decades to the point where Sunday's NASCAR race will handle four times more action than the 100th running of the Indy 500. I'll still watch it and I'll even bet a few drivers to win, but my action on the NASCAR race will be 10 times more than the IndyCar race.

Last year I got lucky with Juan Pablo Montoya and I'm going to roll with him again Sunday. Team Penske has won four the five Indy races this season and Chevy has won all five. Team Penske also has 16 Indy 500 wins, easily the most by any car owner. This is the race Penske puts all their research and development into and they have the most resources and cash to give themselves an edge over everyone else, so that's good enough for me.

The reason I prefer NASCAR more is the ratings for each driver are truer. We have a lot of data to go off of, especially on 1.5-mile tracks. So the first thing we'll do is look back at what happened in the previous four races on 1.5s with an emphasis on Atlanta and Texas results because the two tracks run most similar to Charlotte. Last week's All-Star Race was also run at Charlotte, but between the randomness of the rule changes, the results don't tell the whole story. One thing we can take out of the All-Star race was that Kyle Larson was very fast and we should expect another good run Sunday.

Kyle Busch has never won at Charlotte in any Cup points race or the All-Star Race, but he's the only driver to finish in the top-five in all four races on 1.5s. He's also won the past two races on them (Texas, Kansas). Over his Cup career at Charlotte in points races he's had 10 top-fives in 24 starts. That's good stuff!

The best value of the bunch might be Dale Earnhardt Jr., who also surprisingly has never won a points race at Charlotte (32 starts). The reason Junior should be looked at seriously at 15-to-1 odds is because of runner-ups at Atlanta and Texas this year. He's also starving for a win this season.

Jimmie Johnson leads active drivers with seven wins, the last coming in 2014. He's been outstanding on these type of tracks with the new low downforce package winning at Atlanta, finishing third at Las Vegas while leading the most laps (76) and fourth at Texas. He also won at Fontana's 2-mile layout where the set-up requirements are similar.

Joey Logano has a series leading 9.5 average finish in 14 starts and won for the first time at Charlotte last fall. He also won the All-Star race last week, but they won't be any goofy lineup inversions this time around. Still, he's shown over time he likes this track and his crew is a good candidate to make the winning changes needed over the final 100 laps.

What's so unique about this race is that it starts in the day, runs through dusk and then closes out at night. That's three different climates and temperatures where the car has to be continually adjusted on the fly. All the practices will be run in the day with qualifying run on Thursday night, so you're going to get a feel in any of those sessions that will be applicable to race conditions. Of course, fast is fast -- always, but it's still something to consider and not go all-in with the practice times like a normal race when finalizing wagering options.

As for the Formula-1 race at Monaco, a place Montoya also won when he drove in the series, we have to starts with Nico Rosberg who won the first four races and then also look at 18-year-old Max Verstappen won the Spanish Grand Prix two weeks ago. Lewis Hamilton, winner of the 2008 Monaco GP, has yet to win this season and it's a good spot and price just because of teammate Rosberg dominating. Let's go with Hamilton to get his first win.

Indy 500 Top-5 Finish Prediction
1) #2 Juan Pablo Montoya (6/1)
2) #3 Helio CastroNeves (6/1)
3) #12 Will Power (8/1)
4) #22 Simon Pagenaud (8/1)
5) #98 Alexander Rossi (100/1)

Coca-Cola 600 Top-5 Finish Prediction
1) #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. (15/1)
2) #18 Kyle Busch (6/1)
3) #48 Jimmie Johnson (6/1)
4) #20 Matt Kenseth (8/1)
5) #22 Joey Logano (8/1)

Almeida, Garbrandt clash

UFC Fight Night 88: Almeida vs. Garbrandt
Sunday, May 29th – 9:00 p.m. ET
Mandalay Bay Events Center
Las Vegas, Nevada

Thomas Almeida (20-0-0) vs. Cody Garbrandt (8-0-0)
Five Round Bantamweight Bout
Line: Almeida -155, Garbrandt +135

Undefeated bantamweights Thomas Almeida and Cody Garbrandt meet in Las Vegas at UFC Fight Night 88.

Thomas Almeida is just 24 years of age, but he has already racked up an impressive MMA record of 20 wins with zero defeats.

The Brazilian won all of his first fifteen bouts in the first round, and although he has not continued that remarkable streak against better competition, he is still without a blemish on his record.

Cody Garbrandt is also undefeated with eight victories and no defeats, seven of which have come via knockout or TKO. This will be the American’s toughest test to date, and he is a slight underdog heading into the matchup.

Almeida lands an incredible 6.82 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy of 50.13 percent. He does absorb a high 4.59 significant strikes per minute as a result of his fighting style, but he has a solid defense rate of 65.73 percent.

The Brazilian has yet to attempt a takedown or submission in his MMA career, but he does defend takedowns at an 83.33 percent clip.

Garbrandt averages 3.63 significant strikes per minute, but his accuracy is low at 37.24 percent. He absorbs 2.61 such strikes per minute with a defense rate of 67.75 percent.

The Ohio native averages 1.76 takedown attempts per 15 minutes with an accuracy of 44.44 percent, and he has yet to have a takedown attempt to defend or have a submission attempt of his own.

UFC Fight Night 88
By Brian Edwards

The MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas will host UFC Fight Night 88, a 12-fight card Sunday night headlined by a pair of unbeaten 24-year-old bantamweights on the rise. Thomas Almeida, the No. 7 ranked 135-pounder, will take on unranked Cody ‘No Love’ Garbrandt in a five-round scrap to cap the holiday show on Fox Sports 1.

The four-fight set of prelims will get started at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. The main card has six fights, including Renan Barao vs. Jeremy Stephens in the former bantamweight champion’s featherweight debut. There are a pair of bouts on Fight Pass, including a key bantamweight showdown between fourth-ranked Aljamain Sterling and eighth-ranked Bryan Caraway.

We’re going to go way out on a limb here and say that this will be the first of several meetings between Almeida and Garbrandt, who told ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto that while walking alone at Mandalay Bay on Thursday he almost got into it with Almeida and members of his team before security stepped in to separate him from his opponent’s group.

As of Saturday afternoon, most books had Almeida (21-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) listed as a -165 favorite with Garbrandt as the +145 underdog. The total is 1.5 rounds (-155 ‘over,’ +135 ‘under’). If you like the fight to go the distance, a nice +350 payout can be had in a proposition wagers at 5Dimes. Garbrandt (8-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) is a wrestler who won a state title in Ohio as a freshman in high school. At the age of 15, he began training in boxing with his uncle, who was an Olympian alternate in the sport. Garbrandt joined Team Alpha Male out of Sacramento in 2012.

After winning his first five professional fights on regional circuits in Ohio and the Pittsburgh area, Garbrandt made his promotional debut at UFC 182 on Jan. 3 of last year. He scored a victory over Marcus Brimmage by third-round knockout.

Garbrandt was back in the Octagon at UFC 189 last July, earning a unanimous-decision win over Henry Briones with 30-27 scores from the judges. In his last outing at UFC Pittsburgh in February, Garbrandt finished Augusto Mendes with a first-round KO.

Almeida fights out of Chute Box Academy in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He has a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a black belt in Muay Thai. Almeida won the bantamweight title in the MMASH and Legacy FC promotions before signing with the UFC.

He made his Octagon debut on Nov. 8 of 2014 by earning Fight of the Night honors with a UD win over Tim Gorman. Next, Almeida captured a first-round KO win over Yves Jabouin at UFC 186, garnering a Performance of the Night bonus in the process. His next two wins – a flying-knee KO over Brad Pickett at UFC 189 and a one-punch first-round KO vs. Anthony Birchak in Sao Paulo this past November – provided him with Performance of the Night bonuses as well. Therefore, he’s 4-for-4 in the Fight-Night-Bonuses Dept.

Prediction: I like Garbrandt for three units at +145. Also, give me 1.5 units on ‘under 1.5 rounds for a +135 return. Both fighters are dynamic strikers with excellent power. In other words, I could see either men scoring a spectacular finish, though I believe Garbrandt has the better chin. This should be a great fight. If you’re going to be out partying for the holidays, make sure you hit the DVR for the event (and the ensuing show on FS1 because you don’t want to get hosed like I did for Frankie Edgar vs. Urijah Faber because the headliner ran past the scheduled end time).

In the co-main event, Stephens (24-12 MMA, 11-11 UFC) is poised to welcome Barao into the 145-pound loop when he makes his 23rd career walk to the Octagon. The 30-year-old Stephens has lost three of his last four fights, dropping unanimous decisions to Cub Swanson, Charles Oliveira and Max Holloway. He beat Dennis Bermudez by scoring a third-round KO win with a flying knee and subsequent punches at UFC 189.

Stephens owns a 4-3 record since going down to 145 after competing at lightweight for the first 15 fights of his UFC tenure. The best win of Stephens’ career came at UFC 91 where he earned KO of the Night honors with his third-round finish of current 155-pound champ Rafael dos Anjos. He also owns notable scalps over Cole Miller, Sam Stout, Marcus Davis and Darren Elkins.

Eight of Stephens’s 12 defeats have come by decisions, including split-decision setbacks against Melvin Guillard and former lightweight kingpin Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis. He has only been knocked out once (Yves Edwards) and he’s been submitted on three occasions.

Barao (33-3-1 MMA, 8-2 UFC) is returning to the cage for the first time in more than 10 months. The 29-year-old Brazilian was once considered by some to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. However, he has come upon hard times the last two years. First, Barao lost his bantamweight strap when T.J. Dillashaw dominated him the entire way before finishing him by KO at UFC 173. Then Barao missed weight for the immediate rematch that had been scheduled. He bounced back by bagging a Performance of the Night bonus with his third-round KO win over Mitch Gagnon in December of 2014. This victory earned him another shot at Dillashaw at UFC on Fox in Chicago last summer. Unfortunately for the Brazilian, nothing had changed between the two fighters. Dillashaw dominated Barao again before getting another finish by KO early in the fourth round.

Before running into Dillashaw, Barao won his first seven UFC fights and went more than 10 years without a loss. He raced out to a 7-0 record in the UFC, winning the interim bantamweight strap vacated by then-injured Dominick Cruz with a UF win over Faber at UFC 149. Barao defended his belt with a fourth-round submission win over Michael McDonald in February of 2013.

He successfully defended the belt twice more with TKO wins over Eddie Wineland and Faber for a second time, only to run into his nemesis in Dillashaw next.

Just before the weigh-ins on Friday, most books had Barao installed as a -190 favorite. Stephens was +160 on the comeback (risk $100 to win $160). The total is 2.5 rounds (‘over’ -125, ‘under’ +105).

Prediction: I’m tempted to go with a really small one-half unit play on Stephens and a I might do so if the underdog odds get a little better on Saturday (I’d say +180 is my buy price). Stephens has a great chin and no fighter not named T.J. has finished Barao in the last decade and change. Therefore, I’ll go with one unit on the ‘over’ (2.5 rounds at -125 price).

The rest of the main card looks like this:

Rick Story (-115) vs. Tarec Saffiedine (-115)
Vitor Miranda -175 vs. Chris Camozzi (+155)
Lorenz Larkin (-125) vs. Jorge Masvidal (+105)
Paul Felder (-310) vs. Josh Burkman (+255)

MORE PLAYS:

I’ll go with Lorenz Larkin at -125 over Masvidal for two units. Also, give me one unit on Sterling-Caraway ‘under’ 2.5 rounds (+158 at 5Dimes).

**B.E.’s Octagon Nuggets**

-- Sterling has nine finishes in his 13 career MMA fights.

-- Larkin owns a 2-1 UFC record since dropping down from middleweight to 170. His only loss was a split-decision defeat to Albert Tumenov. Meanwhile, Masvidal is 1-1 at welterweight since moving up from 155 pounds. I think Larkin’s size advantage will be the key.

-- B.J. Penn has been yanked off of the UFC 199 card after being flagged for a potential doping violation. Penn admitted to USADA officials that he used an IV that is now banned, but wasn’t banned when he last fought in 2014. Penn, who is 0-3-1 in his last four fights and hasn’t won since knocking out Matt Hughes at UFC 123 in November of 2010, had been training at Jackson-Wink MMA in Albuquerque. He was originally scheduled to fight Dennis Siver until the German kickboxer pulled out due to an injury. Siver was replaced by veteran Cole Miller, who will now take on ‘Bruce Leeroy.’

-- Stipe Miocic will defend his heavyweight title for the first time when he takes on Alistair Overeem at UFC 203 at Quicken Loans Arena. This will be the UFC’s debut in Miocic’s hometown of Cleveland. 5Dimes opened Miocic as a -170 ‘chalk,’ leaving Overeem at +140 on the comeback (risk $100 to win $140). The number has dropped to -165 with ‘The Reem’ now at +135. The total is 1.5 rounds (‘over’ -140, ‘under’ +100).

-- Matt Brown vs. Jake Ellenberger has been added to the UFC 201 card at Philips Arena in Atlanta. There’s no line out yet, but I like Brown to win this one by KO in the first round or early second. I expect Brown will be favored too heavily to bet on the straight price, but a prop for Brown to win inside the distance and/or ‘under’ 1.5 rounds could present numbers to our liking.

NBA notebook: Pelicans rookie Dejean-Jones dies from gunshot wound
By The Sports Xchange

New Orleans Pelicans rookie guard Bryce Dejean-Jones died from a gunshot wound to his abdomen after he broke into a Dallas apartment, police said Saturday. He was 23.
Dejean-Jones was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries early Saturday morning.
Dejean-Jones was attempting to enter the apartment of his girlfriend, according to agent Scott Nichols.
However, Dallas police were told by the apartment resident that he didn't know Dejean-Jones, who kicked down the front door of the apartment at the Camden Belmont and then kicked open the bedroom door.
The resident, who had retrieved his handgun, fired at Dejean-Jones once he entered the bedroom.
Dejean-Jones was found by police in an outdoor passageway.
Dejean-Jones, who was undrafted out of college, signed a three-year contract with the Pelicans in February after playing through consecutive 10-day contracts. He averaged 5.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 19.9 minutes over 14 games (11 starts). His season ended when he had surgery for a broken right wrist.

--An emotional LeBron James got choked up moments after he celebrated his sixth consecutive trip to the NBA Finals on Friday night.
With James scoring 33 points and Kyrie Irving adding 30, the Cavaliers overwhelmed the Toronto Raptors 113-87 in Game 6 to advance to the NBA Finals for the second year in a row.
James' voice began to crack when asked by ESPN's Doris Burke what he is most proud of with his trips to the championship series.
"I don't know," James said on the court. "I have heard all the questions, and that right there is a stumper. Um, I am just very humbled and gracious that the man above has given me the opportunity to play the game that I love. And I get to go out here and do it every single night in front of my fans.
"It is very emotional to be a part of something like this. This is my sixth straight. It means everything."

--Guard DeMar DeRozan, who will become a free agent for the first time in his career, hopes to stay with the Toronto Raptors.
One day after the Raptors were eliminated from the NBA playoffs by the Cleveland Cavaliers, DeRozan was asked if he can find a better situation than Toronto
"I don't think so," DeRozan said Saturday, via ESPN.com. "My mindset has always been Toronto. I've always preached it. I was passionate about it when we were losing, when we were terrible. I said I was going to stick through this whole thing, and I want to be that guy who brings this organization to where it is now. I definitely don't want to switch that up after we win."
The 6-foot-7, 220-pound DeRozan, who will become an unrestricted free agent July 1, averaged 23.5 points during the regular season and 20.9 during the postseason.

Preview: Fever (2-2) at Dream (4-1)

Date: May 29, 2016 3:00 PM EDT

The Atlanta Dream are surprising Eastern Conference leaders and now have a chance to avenge their lone defeat of the year.

They seek a fourth straight victory Sunday when they host the Indiana Fever and Tamika Catchings, who is within reach of a major milestone.

Atlanta (4-1) was ranked No. 11 in the preseason Associated Press WNBA Power Rankings, but its strong start has moved the Dream to No. 6. Angel McCoughtry had 26 points and nine rebounds in Friday's 102-93 victory at Dallas.

Indiana (2-2) seeks to bounce back from a difficult 74-71 loss to unbeaten Minnesota on Friday in its first road game. The Fever shot 37.7 percent in a rematch of the WNBA Finals that also took place three days after coach Stephanie White created a possible distraction by announcing she will leave the club to coach Vanderbilt after the season.

Catchings needs 11 points to join Tina Thompson as the second player in WNBA history to score 7,000.

She scored 14 points as Indiana placed seven players in double digits in a 94-85 home win over Atlanta on May 20.

That contest marked the first for Layshia Clarendon against her former team after she was traded to Atlanta on May 10 for a second-round pick. She spent her first three seasons with the Fever after being drafted ninth overall in 2013.

Clarendon showed the Fever what she can do by making 7 of 8 shots for 19 points in her first start with her new club. She matched that point total Friday.

One difference in this matchup is that Indiana center Erlana Larkins should see more action after she hurt her knee and left after two minutes in the first meeting. Larkins, who began the season with a pair of double-doubles, had five points and six boards in 22 minutes Friday.

The Dream have lost four straight at home to the Fever. Indiana's nine road victories a year ago matched the franchise record, accomplished four other times.

Preview: Sky (1-4) at Wings (3-2)

Date: May 29, 2016 4:30 PM EDT

The Chicago Sky are on the verge of matching the worst six-game start in franchise history from back when they were an expansion team.

They'll seek to avoid a fifth straight defeat Sunday in their first trip to Arlington to face the Dallas Wings.

Chicago (1-4) has matched its worst start since 2010 and has not lost five of six to start a season since the franchise began 1-13 in 2006. The Sky have lost all four games with star forward Elena Delle Donne since routing Connecticut 93-70 in their May 14 opener without her.

Delle Donne is the reigning MVP after she averaged 23.4 points a season ago, a mark that's down to 19.8 this season. She scored 27 and grabbed nine rebounds before fouling out with 1:28 to play in Friday's 79-78 loss at San Antonio.

Chicago has played once with their full lineup since point guard Courtney Vandersloot has missed the last three games with an ankle injury.

Jamierra Faulkner has filled in adequately in her place and is second in the league in field-goal percentage at 59.0. Faulkner scored nine points with a career-high 11 assists Friday.

The Sky began the season ranked third in the Associated Press WNBA Power Rankings and have slipped to No. 7.

Dallas (3-2) began the year ranked seventh and is now fourth, although the Wings fell 102-93 to surprising Atlanta on Friday. Plenette Pierson and Aerial Powers had 16 points apiece.

Courtney Paris had 11 points and 14 rebounds. She's second in the league in rebounding with 11.8 per game and third in field-goal percentage at 58.3.

The Wings played Friday without Skylar Diggins, who has seen action just once after tearing her ACL last year. She logged 12 minutes in last Saturday's 82-77 win over the Stars in the home opener, but Dallas is being careful with the player selected No. 3 in the draft by the franchise in 2013 after Chicago took Delle Donne at No. 2.

These teams split two meetings a year ago, with Delle Donne totaling 61 points. The Wings - then the Tulsa Shock - didn't have Diggins or star Odyssey Sims in a 92-71 loss in the last meeting Sept. 11.

Sims is averaging a team-high 17 points.

Preview: Mystics (2-3) at Mercury (0-4)

Date: May 29, 2016 6:00 PM EDT

The Washington Mystics earned their first victory in the Pacific Northwest in more than a decade their last time out.

They'll look to secure their first win in the desert in a half-dozen years Sunday and send the Phoenix Mercury to their first 0-5 start in franchise history.

After beginning the season with three straight home losses, the Mystics won in overtime last Saturday at Connecticut to open a three-game trip. They followed with another overtime victory, beating Seattle 84-82 on Thursday for their first victory at KeyArena since July 2005.

The Mystics haven't won in Phoenix since July 2010, losing the last five meetings in Arizona.

The Mercury, however, haven't had any success at home this season. Or on the road, either, for that matter.

Phoenix dropped to 0-4 for the first time since 2008 and third time in franchise history with Wednesday's 85-78 loss to Minnesota. The Mercury, who went 13-4 at home last season, have opened a four-game homestand with back-to-back defeats and have never started a season 0-3 on their own court.

Penny Taylor had 25 points on 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point range Wednesday but the rest of the team was 3 of 17 from beyond the arc. Diana Taurasi misfired on 12 of 15 shots and had seven turnovers for Phoenix, which was again undone by its inability to control the glass.

Brittney Griner had two rebounds and four points before fouling out for the Mercury, who are averaging a league-low 29 boards.

Phoenix's woes also stem from a porous defense. The Mercury are last in scoring defense (89.5 points per game) and opponent field-goal percentage (46.9) and third in opponent 3-point percentage (33.3).

Their struggles on the perimeter spell trouble against the Mystics, who are shooting a league-best 37.8 percent from long range.

Ivory Latta made an off-balance 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down late against the Storm and was 3 of 4 from beyond the arc in her season debut. The veteran guard, who had been recovering from surgery for a torn meniscus in her right knee, played 21 minutes off the bench and scored 16 points to join the 3,000-point club.

Latta had 24 points in a 71-63 home win over the Mercury on Aug. 28, but scored eight in a 73-53 loss in Phoenix five days later.

At the Gate - Sunday
By Mike Dempsey

We are now just 13 days out from the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes (G1) and Exaggerator remains the solid betting favorite, currently at odds of 5-4.

The contender starting to take some action is Governor Malibu, who has overtaken Suddenbreakingnews as the second choice in the wagering at 6-1.

The colt won the Federico Tesio at Pimlico and then last out ran a good second in the Peter Pan (G2) over the Belmont Park main track on May 14, beaten ¾ of a length by the highly regarded Unified.

While Exaggerator looks as if he is going to be very tough, let’s not forget that American Pharoah last year was the first betting favorite to win the third jewel of the Triple Crown since Afleet Alex in 2005.

We have seen some very talented horses lose as the betting favorite in the Belmont Stakes in recent years including Curlin, Big Brown and California Chrome.

Since 1999, 10 Belmont Stakes winners were sent off at odds of 12-1 or higher including Sarava at 70-1 in 2002, Birdstone at 36-1 in 2004, Da’ Tara at 38-1 in 2008 and Ruler On Ice at 24-1 in 2011.

So let’s not give the race to the Preakness Stakes winner just yet.

Don’t forget we are in action on Monday, which is Memorial Day. Belmont Park hosts the Big Apple Showcase Day, the 10-race card featuring six stakes races for state breds.

Early Belmont Stakes Wagering:
Exaggerator 5-4
Governor Malibu 6-1
Suddenbreakingnews 7-1
Cherry Wine 8-1
Stradivari 10-1
Unified 11-1
Creator 14-1
Destin 14-1

Here is today’s opener from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $25,000N2L (1:30 ET)
#5 Shovalla 5-2
#3 Meet in Khartoum 3-1
#4 Nonna Jo 2-1
#2 Sweetneida 8-1

Analysis: Shovalla was off poorly last out and raced evenly in a fourth place finish against $50,000 starter allowance company at the Big A in her first start against winners. The filly was a good looking maiden winner two back on the inner track for a $40,000 tag, winning by 7 1/4 lengths. She looks well spotted here by RRod tagged for $25,000 and facing non-winners of two.

Meet in Khartoum caught a muddy track last out and came with a good six wide rally to finish in the runner up spot at this level, traveling in the better part of the racing strip that day. She broke her maiden over the main track here for a $25,000 tag last summer. She earned a career top speed fig in her last outing and looks like a good fit in this spot.

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 3,5 / 2,3,4,5
TRI: 3,5 / 2,3,4,5 / 2,3,4,5,6

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 8 OClm $62,500N2X (5:13 ET)
#2 Comfort 3-1
#4 Farhaan 5-1
#3 Hereditary 6-1
#5 Our Caravan 2-1

Analysis: Comfort was a sharp winner versus Alw-1 optional claimers last November for Pletcher. The colt was making his first start off a seven-month layoff, checking in fourth in the Lexington (G3) last April in his previous start, his first against winners. He spent the winter in Florida but did not make a start and his local work was at Monmouth Park. Pletcher is 36% winners (with a +ROI) with runners coming back off a +180-day layoff.

Farhaan has come up short at this level five times in a row now but he was squeezed back coming out of the gate last out and finished up well for third. The runner up in his last outing was Unbridled Juan, who came back to win again at this level in the slop on May 4 with a 102 Beyer. The seven-year-old has lost a step or two, but the multiple stakes winner fits in this spot.

Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 2,4 / 2,3,4,5
TRI: 2,4 / 2,3,4,5 / 2,3,4,5,6

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Monmouth Park:

MTH Race 9 The Miss Liberty (4:41 ET)
#9 Notte d'Oro 5-1
#5 Sawyer 8-1
#8 Isabella Sings 7-2
#6 Lady Serena 10-1

Analysis: Notte d'Oro stalked the early pace and came with a good late rally to finish in the runner up spot last out in the Powder Break off a 2 1/2 month break. The Clement trainee landed in the exacta in half of her 10 starts last year including winning a couple of stakes. The mare is going to get a hot pace to run at and she should be flying last as she makes just her third start since last October.

Sawyer returns off nearly a three month break here for the Cibelli barn. The mare has landed in the money in 15 of her 17 career starts on turf and has run well fresh in the past. She should get a good tracking trip sitting off what likely is going to be a sharp pace. Worth tossing in the mix here if she goes off near her 8-1 morning line.

Wagering
WIN: #9 to win at 7-2 or better.
EX: 5,9 / 5,6,8,9
TRI: 5,9 / 5,6,8,9 / 5,6,8,9,12

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Belmont Park
R1: #2 Sweetneida 8-1
R6: #6 Saltine Warrior 8-1
R7: #9 Saratoga Smoke 10-1
R9: #8 Fringe Benefits 8-1

Good luck today!

(2) BELLINI MARTINI raced well last week being used twice. (5) DEFEND THE ROCK veteran trotter makes his third start in a new barn and has room to improve. (4) COMMANDERGALLEON N has some question marks coming into the race off a scratch but has been facing tougher on the year.

Race 3

(9) MAJOR LEGACY if the pacer gets a good early spot without having to use much horse he can make it three straight; fires early. (3) ROCKINWITHBEST well bred 3-year-old is talented enough to take home the final with a smooth trip. (5) SHOTSKI has burned cash in two straight uninspiring performances; use caution.

Race 4

(9) DAKOTA ROAD got caught too far back last start. The pacer has shown good closing ability and just needs a good setup. (8) HOLDONWE'REROLLING three-year-old has a nice pedigree and room to improve against weaker. (2) HASH-TAG SWAG has been getting faster in every start; threat.

Race 5

Race 8

(7) KING MUFASA Illinois champion wasn't on his game last start but had been sharp prior. The 6-year-old was the top driver's choice of three. (8) FOX VALLEY QATAR has been knocking on the door against similar. (10) KARETS got an acclimating start over the track last week and can threaten with an effort like the start two back.

Race 9

(7) MAJOR ED if the pacer is ready off the layoff he can pace circles around this bunch. (8) TRACY'S HERO comes off an excellent qualifier and looks to offer value. (3) SIR ARTHUR D will be much closer turning for home this week against a field full of question marks.

Race 10

In a very competitive race, (11) JDS CHANCEY DESIGN doesn't win by much but always manages to out-game his opponents. (4) DR DRAKE RAMORAY gets a great starting post with options. (1) RED HOT ART gelding pacer was a very expensive yearling purchase that could be just starting to figure it out; threat.

MLB roundup: Utley, Dodgers slam Mets
By The Sports Xchange

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets' Noah Syndergaard was ejected in the third inning for throwing at Chase Utley, who broke a scoreless tie with a homer leading off the sixth and busted the game open with a grand slam in the seventh of the Los Angeles Dodgers' 9-1 victory Saturday.
Los Angeles (26-24) won for the fifth time in six games. New York (28-20) lost for only the second time in their last eight games.
After stirring 40-minute ceremony honoring the 1986 World Series champion Mets, the teams played two uneventful innings. With one out and nobody on in the third, the game turned interesting when Syndergaard's first pitch sailed behind Utley. It appeared to be an attempt to exact revenge for the National League Division Series last October when former New York shortstop Ruben Tejada suffered a broken leg after a hard slide into second base by Utley.
Home plate umpire Adam Hamari immediately ejected Syndergaard and eventually tossed Mets manager Terry Collins after a long argument.
Utley capped his heel-turn evening in the seventh when he laced a 1-0 pitch by Hansel Robles over the right-center field wall for the sixth grand slam of his career.

Royals 8, White Sox 7
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Brett Eibner capped an improbable Kansas City comeback with a walk-off single with two outs in the ninth as the Royals scored seven runs in the final inning to defeat Chicago.
The Royals trailed 7-1 entering the ninth but sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs with two outs, sending the White Sox to their fifth straight loss.
Tyler Saladino hit a three-run homer and Avisail Garcia blasted a two-run shot as the White Sox jumped out a 7-1 lead.

Cubs 4, Phillies 1
CHICAGO -- Right-hander Kyle Hendricks snapped a two-game losing streak with an impressive nine-inning effort as Chicago beat Philadelphia.
The Cubs posted their fourth straight win and 11th series victory of the season. The Phillies dropped their second straight and fourth in five games.
Hendricks scattered five hits and allowed one run, struck out seven and walked none. It was his first complete game since a 3-0 win over San Diego on May 21, 2015.
Dexter Fowler homered and Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist each collected RBI doubles for Chicago.

Blue Jays 10, Red Sox 9
TORONTO -- Devon Travis beat out an infield hit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and Toronto came back twice to defeat Boston.
The Blue Jays tied the game on a single by Jose Bautista to cap a four-run eighth, then David Ortiz hit his 13th homer of the season with one out in the top of the ninth against right-handed reliever Gavin Floyd (2-3), who finished the inning to get the win.
Russell Martin, who also had a homer and a single, tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a double, took third on a wild pitch and scored the winning run on the hit to third by Travis. Martin had three RBIs as Toronto made it two in a row over the Red Sox, who have lost three straight.

Indians 11, Orioles 4
CLEVELAND -- Yan Gomes had two hits and three RBIs and Danny Salazar pitched six strong innings as Cleveland beat Baltimore.
The Indians (26-21) moved past the Chicago White Sox (27-23) into first place in the American League Central.
Gomes, who came into the game hitting .177, had a two-run single in the first inning and an RBI single in the fifth.
Salazar (5-3) held the Orioles to two runs and six hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Reds 7, Brewers 6
MILWAUKEE -- Adam Duvall had two hits, including a game-tying, three-run home run the eighth, and drove in the go-ahead run on a groundout in the ninth as Cincinnati snapped an 11-game losing streak.
Aaron Hill and Jonathan Lucroy had two hits apiece for Milwaukee, which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end despite a 6-1 lead.
Duvall's home run was his second in as many games.

Cardinals 9, Nationals 4
WASHINGTON -- Adam Wainwright won his fifth straight decision and added a two-run double, and Greg Garcia had three hits and scored twice as St. Louis defeated Washington.
The Cardinals (26-24) defeated the Nationals (29-21) for the second day in a row after losing the previous five outings to Washington.
Ryan Zimmerman was 4-for-4 for Washington, including two homers. His solo shot in the seventh pulled the Nationals to within 6-4.

Giants 10, Rockies 5
DENVER -- Buster Posey put San Francisco ahead early and gave them the lead again in the late innings with a pair of three-run homers in a victory over Colorado.
The win was the 14th in 16 games for the Giants, who trailed 5-4 before erupting for six runs in the eighth inning.
After Posey's second three-run shot and seventh homer of the season, the Giants pounded Gonzalez Germen for four hits and three runs. Jarrett Parker singled home the first run, and pitcher Cory Gearrin (1-0), who worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings, singled in his first plate appearance to load the bases before Gregor Blanco singled home two runs against Justin Miller.

Rangers 5, Pirates 2
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Yu Darvish allowed one run over five innings in his first big-league start since 2014 as Texas topped Pittsburgh.
Darvish (1-0) missed the 2015 season after having Tommy John surgery last March. Darvish, who was on a 90-pitch limit, struck out seven and threw 81 pitches. He walked one and his fastball topped out at 98 mph on the Globe Life Ballpark radar.
The Rangers made Darvish's first start a triumphant one by touching Pirates starter Juan Nicasio (3-3) for five runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Braves 7, Marlins 2
ATLANTA -- Gordon Beckham hit a three-run homer and Jeff Francoeur also had two hits as Atlanta roughed up Miami's bullpen.
The Braves are 9-34 against everyone else, but 5-0 versus the Marlins after sweeping an April series in Miami and taking the first two games of this set at Turner Field, where Atlanta is 4-20.
The Marlins (25-24) wasted a 2-0 lead as the Braves scored three times in the sixth against reliever Jose Urena and added three more on Beckham's homer in the seventh off Edwin Jackson.

Rays 9, Yankees 5
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay broke out of a weeklong slump, jumping out to a big lead en route victory over New York.
The Rays (22-25) had dropped six of their seven previous games but got a quality start from starter Matt Moore (2-3), who held the Yankees to three runs in six-plus innings. Tampa Bay continued to swing the bat with power as Evan Longoria hit a two-run homer and Hank Conger doubled his season RBI total with a three-run blast.
The Yankees (23-25) lost for the third time in four games.

Athletics 12, Tigers 3
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Oakland bombed the Detroit bullpen for nine runs and 11 hits in the sixth and seventh innings, breaking away from a tie en route to an easy victory.
Billy Butler, Danny Valencia and Khris Davis homered for the Athletics, who averaged 2.9 runs in their previous eight games, seven of which they had lost.
After Victor Martinez's two-run homer off Oakland starter Jesse Hahn (2-2) rallied the Tigers into a 3-3 tie in the top of the sixth, the Oakland offense teed off on Detroit reliever Warwick Saupold (1-1), who hadn't allowed a run in any of his three previous appearances this season.

Twins 6, Mariners 5
SEATTLE -- Minnesota used three home runs and an incredible game-ending double play in the ninth inning to hold on in Seattle.
Seattle had runners at the corners and one out in the ninth when Minnesota catcher Juan Centeno started an unexpected two-out caught stealing on the bases.
Centeno threw to second baseman Brian Dozier, who ran down base-runner Kyle Seager between first and second base and then turned and threw to third, catching pinch-runner Shawn O'Malley with a throw to Eduardo Nunez at the bag. Nunez then threw back to shortstop Eduardo Escobar at second, resulting in the game-ending tag of Seager.
The Mariners challenged the tag at second base, but it was upheld after just over a minute replay review to give Minnesota a delayed victory. Nunez, Miguel Sano and Joe Mauer all homered as Minnesota won its third straight game for the first time since winning four in a row between April 15 and April 18.

Astros 4, Angels 2
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Jason Castro hit a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning to lift Houston over Los Angeles in front of 38,176 at Angel Stadium.
Dallas Keuchel posted his first win since April 15. Keuchel (3-6) retired the final 18 Angels he faced, permitted two runs and just three hits in seven innings, issued no walks and collected five strikeouts.
Mike Trout and Albert Pujols each homered, with Pujols getting the 571st of his career. But after Johnny Giavotella singled in the bottom of the second, Keuchel and two relievers retired the final 24 batters. Luke Gregerson pitched a perfect ninth for his 11th save.

Preview: Red Sox (29-20) at Blue Jays (26-25)

Game: 3
Venue: Rogers Centre
Date: May 29, 2016 1:07 PM EDT

Before becoming a brief fan favorite in Toronto, David Price was a longtime nemesis of the Blue Jays.

Making his first appearance at Rogers Centre since joining the rival Boston Red Sox, Price looks to reprise his previous role and deny a three-game sweep by his former club in Sunday's finale.

Price's stay in Toronto was short but highly successful, with the five-time All-Star amassing a 9-1 record and a 2.30 ERA in 11 regular-season starts after being acquired from Detroit in late July to help the Blue Jays end a 22-year postseason drought. He's making a similar impact so far in Boston, winning seven of his first eight decisions in the first year of a lucrative seven-year contract.

Price (7-1, 5.34) began his Red Sox tenure with a 6.75 ERA through seven starts but is 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA over his past three. He extended the streak by holding Colorado to three runs over seven innings of Tuesday's 8-3 victory.

The 31-year-old did face the Blue Jays at Fenway Park on April 16, striking out nine and allowing two runs in seven innings to improve to 17-2 in 22 starts against Toronto. Price is 8-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 10 meetings since last losing to the Jays with Tampa Bay on Sept. 23, 2011.

Price's next assignment will be preventing the Red Sox' first four-game skid of 2016 and putting Saturday's difficult loss behind. After tying the game with a four-run rally in the eighth inning, the Blue Jays scored twice more in the ninth to pull out a 10-9 win for their fourth consecutive victory.

After David Ortiz sent Boston back ahead with a solo homer in the top of the ninth, Russell Martin drew Toronto (26-25) back even with a two-out RBI double off Craig Kimbrel and scored the deciding run on Devon Travis' infield single.

'With the potency in our lineup, I feel like no lead is really big enough,' said Martin, who finished 3 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs.

Boston's Xander Bogaerts also homered among his three hits to extend his hitting streak to 21 games. He's batting .402 with five homers, 14 RBIs and 21 runs scored over that span.

Ortiz homered in a second straight game and has three with 12 RBIs over his last five. The retiring slugger is 13 for 24 with 10 extra-base hits in his past six.

'Papi going out there and hitting the home run that was huge for us,' Kimbrel said. 'It was very disappointing that I wasn't able to close the door after that.'

Boston (29-20) should have an opportunity to bounce back if it can continue its recent success against R.A. Dickey (2-6, 4.60). The veteran knuckleballer is 0-5 with a 5.21 ERA in eight matchups with the Red Sox since the start of last season, with two of those losses coming last month.

Dickey also has had his problems at Rogers Centre, where he was reached for six earned runs in five innings of an 8-4 loss to Boston on April 9. The 41-year-old is 0-4 with a 5.64 ERA in five home starts.

Dickey was dealt a second straight loss after allowing four runs in 6 2/3 innings in Tuesday's 6-0 road defeat to the Yankees.

Ortiz is 10 for 36 with three homers off Dickey and Bogaerts is hitting .364 in the matchup.

Preview: Orioles (27-20) at Indians (26-21)

Game: 3
Venue: Progressive Field
Date: May 29, 2016 1:10 PM EDT

A road trip that started out so well for the Baltimore Orioles can't end soon enough.

Having their most reliable starting pitcher on the mound with the potential for a series win should make them feel a little better.

Chris Tillman seeks a sixth consecutive win Sunday as the Orioles and first-place Cleveland Indians meet at Progressive Field.

A second straight victory over the Los Angeles Angels last Saturday moved the Orioles a season-best 11 games over .500, but they dropped the series finale behind another dismal start from Ubaldo Jimenez. They then struck out 52 times - a major league record for a three-game series - and were swept in Houston.

Baltimore (27-20) took Friday's series opener 6-4, but Jimenez couldn't make it out of the second inning in Saturday's 11-4 defeat, the Orioles' fifth in six games.

'We did some things that didn't help him,' manager Buck Showalter said. 'We had some throwing errors. When you're so deep in the count and 30-something pitches in the first inning, got everybody kind of on their heels there.'

There is plenty of blame to go around for the team's current malaise. The rotation has compiled a 6.30 ERA with just two quality starts in the 1-5 stretch, the usually stellar defense has committed 10 errors, including four on Saturday, and the offense is batting .189 with runners in scoring position.

With all those facets struggling, Tillman's turn in the rotation is coming at an opportune time. The right-hander has quietly been one of the best starting pitchers in the AL, going 5-0 with a 1.94 ERA in his last seven starts while completing at least six innings in each.

Tillman (6-1, 2.61 ERA) was very good again Tuesday against the Astros, yielding two runs and three hits in seven innings of a 3-2, 13-inning loss.

He won both starts last season against the Indians, allowing two runs over 13 1/3 innings.

Cleveland (26-21) put Saturday's game away early, scoring four runs in the first and building a 7-0 lead after three innings. Yan Gomes drove in three runs and Mike Napoli added two RBIs to help the Indians move into first in the AL Central for the first time since they won on opening day in 2014. They are there despite missing outfielder Michael Brantley and right-hander Carlos Carrasco because of injuries.

'There's people filling in,' Napoli said. 'It's going to take all of us to do this. We've done a good job of sticking together.'

Mike Clevinger (0-1, 8.71) tries a third time for his first major league victory. The 25-year-old's first two starts came on the road and weren't particularly impressive. After allowing four runs over 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision at Cincinnati on May 18, Clevinger gave up six runs and seven hits - including two homers - in 5 1/3 innings of a 7-6 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Monday.

"Early, I felt like I had a lot of stuff," Clevinger said. "I felt like all four pitches were working. I just kind of made some mistakes in high-leverage situations."

Right-handed batters are 8 for 19 against Clevinger, which could bode well for Baltimore's Mark Trumbo, who is 7 for 17 with two homers in his past four games.

Indians right fielder Lonnie Chisenhall was removed from Saturday's game in the fifth inning due to blurred vision. His status is uncertain.

Preview: Yankees (23-25) at Rays (22-25)

Game: 3
Venue: Tropicana Field
Date: May 29, 2016 1:10 PM EDT

Amid one of his best stretches, Nathan Eovaldi no longer needs to rely on his blazing fastball while trusting his other pitches.

The right-hander has won a career-best four straight starts going in the New York Yankees' decisive series finale Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.

Eovaldi (5-2, 3.95 ERA) is among the major league leaders with a fastball averaging 96.9 mph. Blowing hitters away was important to Eovaldi for most of his career, but lately he has learned to have faith in the rest of his repertoire.

"I think the days that he pitches well (happen) when he mixes (his pitches)," manager Joe Girardi told MLB's official website. "You can't just rely on (the) fastball in this league, because guys will catch up and make adjustments."

Since going 1-2 with a 5.46 ERA in his first five starts, Eovaldi has a 2.16 ERA while winning the last four. He allowed two hits in six-plus innings of a 6-0 victory over Toronto on Tuesday.

"Something's working," catcher Andy Romine said. "When you talk to the guy, it's whatever you need to throw to get a guy out is what we're going to throw.

"I know people are saying he throws 100 and stuff like that, but I think he's just (thinking) along the lines of, 'Let's get everybody out and let's do it quick.'"

Eovaldi hopes to fare batter this year against the Rays (22-25) after posting a 4.97 ERA in losing both 2015 matchups.

He will try to give New York (23-25) more of a chance than Michael Pineda did while yielding six runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings of Saturday's 9-5 defeat.

Hank Conger had a three-run homer for one of his three hits and Evan Longoria belted a two-run shot as Tampa Bay snapped a three-game losing streak to win for the second time in eight contests.

The Rays also matched their run total from the previous four games.

"This is what we're capable of,' Longoria said. 'We've shown it in spurts. The thing for us is continue to believe we're capable of afternoons like (Saturday).'

Longoria's two hits Saturday matched his total over 19 at-bats from his previous five games.

Jake Odorizzi (2-2, 3.46) has allowed two runs while winning his last two starts but completed only five innings in each and walked a combined seven. The right-hander overcame three walks by yielding only two hits and fanning seven during a scoreless effort in Tuesday's 4-3 victory at Miami.

Despite failing to reach the sixth inning for a third consecutive start, Odorizzi was pleased with his overall effort earlier this week.

"The way I felt after five innings, regardless of the pitch count, I felt like my stuff didn't drop off from pitch 1 to 107," he said.

Odorizzi, 3-4 with a 5.40 ERA in eight starts against the Yankees, pitches at home for the first time since allowing five runs on three homers in four innings of a 6-3 loss to Oakland on May 13.

Brian McCann is 12 for 20 with three home runs, three doubles and a triple against him. McCann, though, is hitless over 12 at-bats in four games and 2 for 24 in his last seven.

Carlos Beltran is 2 for 12 against Odorizzi, but he's homered in back-to-back games and four times while recording 12 RBIs in his last nine.

Preview: Cardinals (26-24) at Nationals (29-21)

Game: 4
Venue: Nationals Park
Date: May 29, 2016 1:35 PM EDT

The Washington Nationals have set a franchise record by winning Stephen Strasburg's last 14 starts. Now he'd like to break a pair for himself.

The longest winning streak and best start to a season are those club marks within reach for Strasburg on Sunday when he faces the visiting St. Louis Cardinals.

The Nationals have dropped five of their last eight games, including two straight, but haven't lost one started by Strasburg since Sept. 9. His dominance dates back even further because since coming off the disabled list June 23, his 2.22 ERA is topped only by Jake Arrieta (1.18) and Clayton Kershaw (1.40).

Strasburg now can match Arrieta for the best record in baseball at 9-0, something no pitcher in his franchise's history has achieved. Pedro Martinez had been the last to begin 8-0 in 1997. Strasburg also can break a tie for the franchise-record winning streak, having won 11 consecutive decisions just as Dennis Martinez did in 1989 and Livan Hernandez in 2005.

'It means he's one of the best out there and he's pitching like it,' manager Dusty Baker said. 'A lot of people say the wins don't matter, but they matter to the guys on the team and matter to the person getting the wins.'

A big reason the wins keep coming is Washington has averaged 6.7 runs in his 10 starts. Strasburg certainly has done his part, posting a 2.79 ERA while his 11.44 strikeouts per nine innings rank second in baseball.

He had 21 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings in his last two starts, beating the New York Mets in both while allowing three runs.

"Adjectives are tough to describe how well he's thrown the ball this year," second baseman Daniel Murphy told MLB's official website. "I'm glad he's on my side. And he's just been unbelievable."

The Cardinals have already seen it. They got two runs and four hits off Strasburg in the first inning April 29, but he held them to no runs and four hits through the next six in a 5-4 victory.

'That's their M.O. They're going to come out hacking and hunting the heaters,' Strasburg said after his first win in five starts versus St. Louis despite a 2.76 ERA.

The Cardinals lead the NL with 68 homers and are among the leaders with 176 walks after drawing four apiece off Max Scherzer and Gio Gonzalez in the last two days and defeating both. Matt Holliday, 6 for 12 against Strasburg, homered in Saturday's 9-4 win and Matt Carpenter had an RBI double after missing two games for the birth of his first child.

Carpenter started at first instead of his usual third base as Greg Garcia remained there. Garcia has reached base in eight of 10 plate appearances, including three hits Saturday, since being called up when Carpenter was put on the paternity list.

"I had these visions of, 'What can you do to stay?'" Garcia said Saturday after Ruben Tejada was designated for assignment rather than him being sent down.

Michael Wacha (2-5, 5.04) is pitching like he belongs in the minors. A 17-game winner in 2015, Wacha is the first St. Louis pitcher to lose five straight decisions since Joel Pineiro in 2009 and the first to allow at least six runs in three consecutive starts since Mike Maroth in 2007. He's given up 20 runs and 24 hits in 12 innings during that span.

The right-hander allowed a career-worst eight runs in four innings of a 12-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.

'I feel like I'm on time for an inning, two innings, and then, you know, something gets out of whack,' he said. 'I don't know if I'm trying too hard.'

The good news for Wacha is he has an 0.79 ERA in three matchups with the Nationals, striking out 22 in 22 2/3 innings.

Washington has hit six homers through three games of this series, including two by Ryan Zimmerman and one by Bryce Harper on Saturday. Zimmerman tied a career high with four hits to break an 0-for-11 slump, and Harper hit his second homer in three games after going 11 straight without one.

Preview: Reds (16-33) at Brewers (22-27)

Game: 3
Venue: Miller Park
Date: May 29, 2016 2:10 PM EDT

Poised to keep their frustration in check, the Cincinnati Reds rallied to end their lengthy slide and deliver something positive to build on.

Following their first victory in almost two weeks, the Reds can claim their initial winning road series of the season Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

In a game that featured six hit batters and the ejection of Cincinnati starter Alfredo Simon, the Reds (16-33) overcame a 6-1 deficit to snap an 11-game losing streak with Saturday's 7-6 victory. Cincinnati scored five runs in the seventh inning and went ahead in the ninth after an inning-ending double play was overturned by a review.

"It takes a weight off your back, it's fun when you can do that," outfielder Adam Duvall told MLB's official website. "Hopefully we can keep things rolling."

Though both clubs said nobody was intentionally thrown at, it would be easy for Cincinnati to unravel considering its current state. However, the Reds maintain they haven't become consumed by losing.

"The record doesn't show how much effort and hard work we put in and how we pick each other up," said outfielder Tyler Holt, who had two hits with a RBI. "With that being said, it's day to day, and we know we have to get better as a team and some things will happen for the good."

Duvall has seven RBIs while homering in two straight games, and four in his last six. He's gone deep in three straight against the Brewers, and has 11 RBIs over his last six in the series.

Though Brandon Finnegan (1-3, 3.97 ERA) hasn't won since April 16, he gave up a run in eight innings of a 1-0 loss against Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. The Reds have scored three runs in the last three with the left-hander on the mound.

Despite the defeat, Reds manager Bryan Price knows Finnegan's effort was progress made.

"We talk about how we're building our team, Price said. "The first thing we've got to do is get the building blocks here."

Finnegan allowed five runs - three earned - with four coming off home runs by Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy and Aaron Hill over five-plus innings of a 13-7, 10-inning home loss to Milwaukee (22-27) on May 7.

Hill, who homered twice in Friday's 9-5 win, is 7 for 10 in three games. He's 12 for 23 with five home runs and 11 of his 20 RBIs in six against the Reds this season.

Lucroy has a homer with three RBIs in each of the first two of the set, and should be behind the plate to catch Jimmy Nelson (4-3, 2.92).

The right-hander has been brilliant while posting a 1.27 ERA in his last three starts, but is 0-1 while receiving two runs of support in those contests. He gave up a run and struck out eight in six innings of Tuesday's 2-1 win at Atlanta.

"I've always taken pride in battling and giving us a chance to win no matter how good or bad I feel," Nelson said.

Though the outcome was positive for Milwaukee, Nelson didn't really do so opposite Finnegan on May 7. He allowed six runs and eight hits over five innings of that contest.

Jay Bruce, who had two hits Saturday, is 7 for 17 against Nelson.
