NCAAB Game of the Day: Virginia at Virginia Tech

The Cavaliers are coming off a big win over Louisville, but can they cover the 7-point road chalk against the rival Hokies.

Virginia Cavaliers at Virginia Tech Hokies (+7, 132.5)

Sandwiched between a big win over Louisville and a heavyweight fight versus Duke, No. 13 Virginia will need little help getting up for its visit to in-state rival Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash on Sunday. The Cavaliers have owned the series of late, winning nine of the last 10 games, including a 71-48 thrashing at home on Feb. 1.

"Obviously, we know that (Cassell Coliseum) is crazy," Virginia forward Isaiah Wilkins told reporters, "because every time we go in there, we're in a close game, whether we come out on top or we lose. (Virginia coach Tony Bennett will) bring that up for sure, but it's just another game we've got to be locked in for. We've just got to come out with some fire and really be ready to play and be locked in for 40 minutes." Wilkins scored a career-best 15 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the first contest, while junior guard Devon Hall added a career-high 17 points as Virginia posted its largest margin of victory in the series since a 25-point win in 1991. On Monday, the Cavaliers used a 22-5 spurt early in the second half to wipe out a two-point halftime deficit and defeated an undermanned fourth-ranked Louisville squad 71-55. After getting pounded by the Cavaliers, being held to a season low in points while shooting 35.7 percent in the game, Virginia Tech dropped a 74-68 decision at Miami on Wednesday.

TV: 6:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU

CHRIS JORDAN

My Bonus Play is on the San Antonio Spurs over the hapless New York Knicks. It's a shame Knicks owner James Dolan is blinded by his own ego. But that's what happens when the guy at the top can't control his personal issues, it affects everyone and everything around him.

So as long as he is contributing to the distractions and heartache off the court, the Knicks will continue to suffer on the court.

The entire atmosphere and environment surrounding the Knicks is no good right now, and the players are the ones suffering. Now in come the San Antonio Spurs (41-12), with the second-best record in the NBA, including a 22-6 mark on the road, and they won't show any mercy on the Knicks (22-33), who have lost four in a row.

The Spurs, who are on a 6-2 ATS run versus Atlantic Division foes, swept the regular-season series last year, including a 10-point win inside Madison Square Garden.

San Antonio has won two straight and five of six. It is 2-1 on its annual rodeo trip, as it's displaced from home every winter to make way for the rodeo in town. This is the midway point, and after an eight-point win in Philly and an 11-point win in Motown, the Spurs will shine in the basketball mecca.

New York's four-game skid has seen it allow 120.5 points per game, in losses to the Cavaliers, Lakers, Clippers and Nuggets. And all of those setbacks were at home.

I'll lay the chalk with the Spurs, as they take advantage of a team that will continue to suffer terribly as long as its owner and president (Phil Jackson) believe they're the heart and soul of the team, and not the players.

5* SPURS
