NEWSLETTER NFL Football Prediction From Jason Sharpe

Take #163 Tampa Bay (+9.5) over Detroit (1 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 7)
We hit another 8-Unit Play last week with Texas-San Antonio, and we’re now 7-0 with our 8-Unit football picks during a historic big play run. We are going for No. 8 in a row with another 8-Unit Play in Championship Saturday of college football, and you don’t want to miss this play. You also don’t want to miss on this Bonus Play winner. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been playing a lot better football of late. They had three close losses where they outgained two of those opponents in yardage but were done in by their -5 turnover margin in those contests. They then went into Washington and hammered the Redskins by 20 points. They then outplayed the Bears for all but a 7-minute stretch in the 3rd quarter and lost a tight one due to another -3 turnover margin. Last weekend was another heartbreaker as they were in position late to beat the Bengals at home but made some inexcusable errors that cost them in the one-point loss. Detroit comes in off a big Thanksgiving Day win last week. It was emotional game for the Lions who badly needed a win following 2 straight defeats. This game is sandwiched between two very important divisional contests that could be big deals when it comes to the tiebreaker with the Packers for the North division. The Lions offense played well last week, but this is still a unit that has been hit hard with injuries and especially up front on their offensive line. Their offense is ranked towards the bottom of the league only averaging 19 points scored per game this season. Take Tampa Bay plus the points.

NEWSLETTER NFL Football Prediction From Strike Point Sports

Take #154 Cincinnati (-3) over Pittsburgh (1 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 7)
We posted another winning football weekend last week, and that is now 11 of 14 winning weekends. December is one of our best months, with bowl season right around the corner, and we want to build on what has been a dominating season as we continue to prove ourselves in the elite class of football handicappers. Cincinnati has proven themselves as the class of this Division, and they will prove it again against an extremely inconsistent Pittsburgh Steelers team. Many of us are sitting and waiting for Pittsburgh to prove that they can push for a playoff spot and make noise in the second season, but I just don’t think this team has the moxie to do as such. The Steelers had a huge game last weekend at home versus a suspect New Orleans Saints team, and they just couldn’t get it done. Now they have to go on the road to Cincy and play a Bengals team that is outstanding in front of their home fans. The Bengals are 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 home games and 7-1 ATS in their last eight December games. Pittsburgh has proven that they can cash at the window when the play the Bengals, but I just don’t see that happening this Sunday. Pittsburgh cannot get the job done in this spot, this season. The favorite is the play in this series as the team laying points is 6-2 ATS in their last eight meetings. Don’t let the black and gold scare you as this Pittsburgh team is more of a cat than a lion. Lay the points here and take the small home favorite.

KEY STAT: West Ham have scored in 13 of their last 14 matches

EXPERT VERDICT: West Ham and Swansea are riding high after excellent starts to their campaigns and a close encounter is anticipated when they clash at Upton Park. The Hammers are solid at home but Swansea possess quality on the break and the best bet could be on a draw, which wouldn’t be a bad result for either side.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Leicester have lost six of their seven away matches in the Premier League

EXPERT VERDICT: Christian Benteke’s superb winner against Crystal Palace signalled a return to form for both he and Aston Villa and the hosts are fancied to follow up against Leicester, who are winless in nine. Nigel Pearson’s side are leaking goals and will be without suspended skipper Wes Morgan, which could allow Benteke to dominate.

KEY STAT: Napoli have scored at least three goals in five of their last seven home games

EXPERT VERDICT: Rafa Benitez’s men extended their unbeaten league run to ten games on Monday with a 1-1 draw at Sampdoria. They look an impressive side though Empoli will head for Naples with spirits lifted after taking seven points from nine to inch towards mid-table. Given that goals at Napoli are pretty much guaranteed, don’t expect this to disappoint.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: There have been at least two goals in 15 of Gateshead's last 16 matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Warrington grabbed their glory in the FA Cup when they beat League Two Exeter in the last round, although they needed plenty of luck along the way. Conference Premier side Gateshead have failed to score in just one of their last 19 home games and they should have enough firepower to book their spot in the third round.

RECOMMENDATION: Gateshead

KEY STAT: Lyon have won one of their seven away matches in Ligue 1

EXPERT VERDICT: Lyon struck a fortuitous late winner to beat Reims on Thursday after failing to score against both Bastia and St Etienne, and their patchy away form makes them a risky betting proposition at Evian. The hosts have won three on the bounce and will make Lyon graft for a result.

KEY STAT: Both teams have scored in all six of Milan's away league games this season

EXPERT VERDICT: Genoa's impressive run continued with a 3-0 win at struggling Cesena last weekend although they are less ruthless at home. They have lost to Napoli and Sampdoria and drawn with Empoli and Palermo at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and Milan, who have drawn four of their last five away games, can take a point.

NHL Grand Salami - December

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

Preview: Sharks (14-10) at Oilers (6-15)

Date: December 07, 2014 9:00 PM EDT

The Edmonton Oilers are in disarray, but general manager Craig MacTavish isn't deviating from his long-term plan.

Matching the longest home losing streak in team history certainly isn't part of that strategy.

The Oilers go for a rare win over the San Jose Sharks in the opener of this home-and-home set Sunday night, trying to avoid moving within one loss of their franchise-record slide.

Edmonton (6-15-5) hasn't reached the playoffs since 2006, and there's little hope of ending that drought as it owns the fewest points in the NHL.

The Oilers' eight-game home losing streak (0-7-1) is one shy of the team record set from Oct. 16-Nov. 24, 1993. They're also mired in an 11-game overall skid (0-7-4) as they approach the longest in club history - 13 games from Dec. 31, 2009-Jan. 30, 2010.

The pressure is mounting on MacTavish and second-year coach Dallas Eakins as the foundering franchise has failed to find success despite a roster full of high draft picks and promising talent.

The Oilers fell short again Wednesday, losing 3-2 at Winnipeg after Ben Scrivens gave up a goal 17 seconds into overtime.

MacTavish called a press conference Friday, but announced no organizational changes or a switch in philosophy during a testy exchange with the media.

"The accountability of the players to execute has to improve," MacTavish said. "There isn't any tangible evidence of any of that improvement, and that's what's so difficult for everybody to swallow."

That's still not enough for him to make changes to a team that's 0-12-4 against the Western Conference.

"As painful as this process is, we feel that it's a necessary step to get us to the next level," he said. "I've switched out 14 or 15 players in the 18 months that I've been on the job, and what I think I have now is a group that is capable of growth."

The Oilers are 29th in the league with an average of 3.42 goals against, and they've surrendered 32 while going 1-6-2 in their last nine meetings with the Sharks (13-10-4).

That includes a 5-2 defeat in the most recent meeting at Rexall Place on March 25.

Taylor Hall has been a rare bright spot against San Jose, collecting three goals and six assists in three games. The left wing, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2010 draft, has four assists over the past three games and is tied with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - whom the Oilers selected first overall in 2011 - for the team lead with 17 points.

Unlike the Oilers, the Sharks are gaining steam - totaling 18 goals during a season-high four-game winning streak. That's a dramatic improvement after they were held to six while losing the previous four contests.

San Jose continued to put that stretch behind it Saturday, winning 3-2 at Calgary as Patrick Marleau scored the go-ahead goal with 10:42 to play.

"We're finding a way to win and that's great to see," Marleau said according to the team's official Twitter account.

Joe Pavelski leads the Sharks with 12 goals, scoring three times in four games. The center had five goals and four assists while San Jose won four of five meetings with the Oilers last season.

He matched his career high with four points - netting a hat trick - in the most recent visit to Edmonton.

Marleau has 26 points in his last 22 meetings with the Oilers, scoring four goals and setting up two more against them last season.

The teams play again in San Jose on Tuesday.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- For the first time since Oct. 25, the Nashville Predators took a regulation loss at home.

Left winger Brandon Saad scored the first goal and assisted on the game-winner Saturday night as the Chicago Blackhawks took first place in the Central Division from Nashville with a 3-1 win at sold-out Bridgestone Arena.

Rookie goalkeeper Scott Darling (3-1-0), a former Predator farmhand, stopped 32 shots as Chicago (18-8-1) started a four-game road trip with its sixth consecutive win and its ninth win in 10 games.

The Predators (17-7-2) fell to 11-2-1 at home despite another solid game from goalie Pekka Rinne (17-5-1), who made 28 saves.

The Blackhawks made it 2-0 at 2:48 of the second when Saad drove the net and fed right winger Marian Hossa for his fourth goal, his first since Nov. 22. Hossa added an empty-net goal with 1:11 remaining.

Penguins 3, Senators 2

PITTSBURGH -- Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff scored in the final two minutes, leading short-handed Pittsburgh past Ottawa.

Ehrhoff scored his second goal of the season for the Penguins, who rebounded from a shutout loss on Thursday, defeating the Senators for the fifth time in seven games.

Center Evgeni Malkin scored his 13th and 14th goals of the season, the second his 96th career power-play goal, surpassing Rick Kehoe for fourth place on the team's all-time list. Captain Sidney Crosby snapped a three-game point drought with an assist on the game-winner as Pittsburgh defeated Ottawa for the fifth time in seven games.

Blues 6, Islanders 4

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Center Paul Stastny started and completed a comeback from a three-goal deficit as St. Louis beat the New York Islanders.

Stastny scored the game winner with 6:34 left in third period. The Blues trailed 3-0 after one period before storming back with three unanswered goals in the second, including Stastny's score 2:36 into the period.

Stastny's second goal, off a nifty pass across the goalmouth by center Joakim Lindstrom, gave St. Louis its first lead of the day. Right winger Vladimir Tarasenko added an insurance goal with 2:28 left.

NHL all-time wins leader Martin Brodeur earned his first win with the Blues after making 15 saves in relief of starting goaltender Jake Allen, who allowed three goals on 12 shots in the first period.

Flyers 2, Kings 1

LOS ANGELES -- Right winger Wayne Simmonds and center Claude Giroux each scored, guiding Philadelphia over Los Angeles.

Flyers netminder Steve Mason stopped 37 of 38 shots as the Flyers captured their fourth win in a row at Staples and beat the Kings for the eighth time in their last 11 meetings.

Kings goalie Jonathan Quick stopped 14 of 16 shots.

Giroux's goal gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead at 4:35 of the opening period. It was his eighth goal of the season and the 19th game in 25 outings he has produced a point.

Maple Leafs 5, Canucks 2

TORONTO -- Center Peter Holland scored one goal and assisted on another and Jonathan Bernier stopped 44 shots as Toronto defeated Vancouver.

Defenseman Jake Gardiner, right winger Richard Panik, left winger Joffrey Lupul and right winger David Clarkson also scored for the Maple Leafs, who have won three of the first four games of a four-game homestand.

Left winger Daniel Sedin and defenseman Christopher Tanev scored for the Canucks, who had won their two previous games.

Capitals 4, Devils 1

NEWARK, N.J. -- Alex Ovechkin registered just one shot on goal for only the third time this season and Washington overcame the lack of production from their star left winger to knock off New Jersey.

Ovechkin leads the league with 112 shots. His only shot for the Capitals occurred with less than eight minutes to play.

Washington received goals from center Brooks Laich (an empty-netter late in the game), center Evgeny Kuznetsov, right winger Jay Beagle and defenseman Karl Anzer. Braden Holtby made 33 saves.

Stars 4, Canadiens 1

DALLAS -- Tyler Seguin scored twice and Jamie Benn assisted on both Seguin goals as Dallas defeated Montreal.

Dallas, which received a 16-save performance from goaltender Kari Lehtonen, snapped a four-game winless streak.

Both of Seguin's goals came in the second period. The first was 3:09 into the period when he beat Montreal goaltender Carey Price to his short side from the left circle with Dallas on a 5-on-3.

Blue Jackets 3, Lightning 1

TAMPA, Fla. -- Sergei Bobrovsky made 33 saves to lead Columbus over Tampa Bay for its third straight win.

The Eastern Conference-leading Lightning had their five-game home winning streak end.

The Blue Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period behind goals from center Boone Jenner and defenseman David Savard. They did it despite being outshot 14-9.

It was a much different result than the previous meeting between the teams on Nov. 8 when Tampa Bay rolled to a 7-4 win in Columbus.

Red Wings 3, Rangers 2

DETROIT -- Center Darren Helm's goal in the third period broke a tie and gave Detroit a come-from-behind win over the New York Rangers.

The Red Wings, who snapped a five-game losing streak against the Rangers, trailed 2-0 in the second period.

Centers Riley Sheahan and Luke Glendening also scored for Detroit. Goalie Jimmy Howard stopped 27 shots.

It was Red Wings coach Mike Babcock's 500th career win.

Panthers 3, Sabres 2

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Roberto Luongo lost his long streak of shutting out Buffalo, but he and his Florida teammates still earned a victory.

Center Nick Bjugstad's rebound goal with 16.2 seconds left in the second period was the game-winner, snapping a 2-2 tie.

Florida's Aaron Ekblad, who is No. 1 in the NHL in scoring among rookie defensemen, had three assists.

Luongo had posted three straight shutouts against the Sabres -- one while he was with the Vancouver Canucks and two with the Panthers.

Bruins 5, Coyotes 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Left winger Brad Marchand scored two goals and Boston avoided a winless road trip with a victory over Arizona.

The loss was the seventh straight for Arizona on home ice (0-5-2). That is the longest home losing streak in Jets/Coyotes history, eclipsing six-game skids in 2007 and 2009.

The Bruins opened the scoring off a turnover. Arizona defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson tried to send a breakout pass up the left side, but Boston defenseman Dougie Hamilton intercepted it in the neutral zone, fed right winger Reilly Smith streaking toward the net and Smith found left winger Brad Marchand.

Sharks 3, Flames 2

CALGARY, Alberta -- Patrick Marleau's goal midway through the third period lifted San Jose over Calgary.

Marleau showed his hand-eye coordination to send the Sharks to their fourth straight win, making a great play to use his body to control an airborne puck and bat it past Flames goaltender Karri Ramo at 9:18 for his seventh goal of the season.

Ramo made 27 stops and Sharks goalie Antti Niemi had 33 saves.

Justin Braun, Logan Couture and Marleau scored for San Jose. Mark Giordano and Johnny Gaudreau had goals for Calgary.

NBA Preview: Trail Blazers (15-4) at Knicks (4-17)

Date: December 07, 2014 7:30 PM EDT

Outside of one horrid night, the New York Knicks have been close in every other contest during their second seven-game losing streak of the season.

They may need to bring a bit more on the offensive end to keep things close against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Blazers begin a five-game trip at Madison Square Garden on Sunday seeking their 13th win in 14 contests overall and fifth in a row against the struggling Knicks.

While Portland (15-4) has been one of the NBA's top home teams since the start of last season at 41-12, it's also showcasing some solid play on the road with five straight wins after dropping its first two.

The Blazers have actually been scoring at a higher clip on the road (106.3 points per game) than at home (101.8), though most of that can be attributed to a pair of games against league-worst Philadelphia and Denver in which they scored a combined 244 points.

Defensive play on the road should be the concern for Portland, which is surrendering 102.0 points per away game but is among the NBA leaders with 92.3 allowed at home.

Even though the Knicks (4-17) are on the cusp of losing eight straight, six of the losses have come by seven points or less. The only result that was never in doubt was a 105-78 defeat at Oklahoma City on Nov. 28 in which they trailed 30-13 after one quarter and finished with their lowest point total of the season.

The main culprit might have been the absence of Carmelo Anthony, who sat out with back spasms, but two nights earlier New York showed an ability to keep pace with a high-scoring team without him. The Knicks shot 14 for 28 from 3-point range and pushed it to overtime before losing 109-102 at Dallas, which leads the NBA at 110.0 points per game.

For the most part, however, New York is coming out on the losing end of defensive battles. After holding Houston, Miami and Cleveland to less than 91 points apiece, the Knicks should be wary of a Portland club that just proved it also can win ugly.

The Blazers shot a season-worst 39.8 percent and scored what is by far their season low but still defeated Indiana 88-82 on Thursday night.

"That was one of those grind-it-out, ugly wins. Both teams missed shots, 3s, everything. But a win's a win," said LaMarcus Aldridge, who had 18 points and 13 rebounds but was 7 of 21 from the field.

Damian Lillard, who scored 23, jammed his finger during the game and appeared to be in a lot of pain, but X-rays were negative and he should be good to go against the Knicks.

New York rallied from a 20-point deficit Friday at Charlotte and was up one with 41 seconds left on Anthony's 3-pointer, but Kemba Walker hit a layup at the buzzer to give the Hornets a 103-102 win.

"A loss is a loss and you never feel good about a loss," said Anthony, who had 32 points. "To come back down 20 and to take the lead by one and have 4 seconds to go, I don't think you can ask for more than that."

New York hasn't dropped eight in a row since a nine-game skid Nov. 14-Dec.1, 2014, that featured a 102-92 loss in Portland.

The Blazers won 94-90 on their last visit to the Garden on Feb. 5 and have swept both meetings with the Knicks over the last two seasons despite Anthony averaging 38.3 points in the three games he played.
