Preview: Panthers at Blackhawks
Gracenote
Dec 22, 2018

The Chicago Blackhawks carry a season-best three-game winning streak into their matchup against the road-weary Florida Panthers on Sunday, loaded with confidence after their rookie goaltender helped shut down the league's top line. Collin Delia stopped 35 shots in his first game of the season and third of his career, and Chicago kept the Avalanche's Mikko Rantanen, Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog off the scoresheet in a 2-1 victory at Colorado on Friday.

"We didn't seem to have as much juice in the legs," Blackhawks coach Jeremy Colliton, whose club won at Dallas 5-2 on Thursday, told reporters. "It was a battle all night, it felt like we were playing uphill but credit to our guys they found a way to survive and we got some timely saves. ..." Florida won at Detroit 2-1 on Saturday to reach .500 by NHL standards with its third victory in the last four games. "I thought we got back to our identity today," Panthers coach Bob Boughner told reporters. "We were fast in the neutral zone instead of going side to side." Chicago prevailed 5-4 on Nov. 24 in Florida behind defenseman Erik Gustafsson's overtime goal in the first of two meetings this season for its third straight victory in the series while the Panthers ride a seven-game losing streak in the Windy City.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Florida, WGN (Chicago)

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (14-14-6): Jonathan Huberdeau (team-high 42 points) had two assists Saturday to record his 12th multi-point game in his last 16, registering five goals and 22 assists during that span. Captain Aleksander Barkov (35 points), who also had two assists versus Detroit, saw his streak of 63 games without a penalty end when he was called for holding. Right wing Evgenii Dadonov (club-most 17 goals, 34 points) scored for the fourth time in the last six games Saturday and has three goals and two assists in his last four contests.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (13-19-6): Patrick Kane leads the club with 17 goals and 43 points, collecting two tallies and four assists during a four-game point streak. Jonathan Toews (31 points) and Alex DeBrincat (30) have 16 goals apiece with DeBrincat scoring in each of the last two games while recording two assists. Artem Anisimov (seven goals, 17 points) scored Friday for the third time in eight games this month.

OVERTIME

1. Chicago owned the second-worst power play in the league at 12.5 percent entering Saturday but has scored with the man advantage in two of its last three games while Florida boasted the No. 3 unit at 28.1 after going 5-for-12 in its last four contests.

2. The Panthers' penalty-killing unit extinguished all 19 penalties over a seven-game stretch before yielding three in a 6-1 loss to Toronto on Thursday but rebounded with a 4-for-4 effort Saturday while the Blackhawks are 8-for-8 during their winning streak.

3. Florida G James Reimer (5-7-3, 3.48 goals-against average, .888 save percentage) will likely get the start after Roberto Luongo stopped 33 shots Saturday.

Preview: Flyers at Rangers
Gracenote
Dec 23, 2018

A day after suffering their first loss since Scott Gordon replaced Dave Hakstol as coach, the Philadelphia Flyers will try to get back on the winning track when they visit the New York Rangers on Sunday. Rookie goaltender Carter Hart led the way as the Flyers won Gordon’s first two games at the helm, but they could not take advantage of a 37-19 advantage in shots on Saturday as they dropped a 4-3 decision to Columbus.

“We’ve come off two hard-fought wins and we played a game (Saturday) where we certainly had our fair share of chances. … And we limited the amount of opportunities,” Gordon told reporters. “We should go to New York feeling confident about our game as far as where we’re going.” Philadelphia has won four straight meetings with the Rangers, posting shutouts in the last two matchups - including a 4-0 home triumph on Nov. 23 behind recently departed netminder Calvin Pickard. New York has lost nine of its last 12 games (3-6-3) after falling 5-3 in Toronto on Saturday despite receiving a goal and an assist from defenseman Neal Pionk, who raised his season total to 19 points. The Rangers have been one of the best home teams in the league this season, going 11-4-3 while earning at least one point in 12 of the last 13 contests (9-1-3).

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NHL Network, NBCS Philadelphia, MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE FLYERS (14-16-4): Captain Claude Giroux, who leads the team with 42 points after notching an assist against the Blue Jackets, Sean Couturier and Travis Konecny each notched three points against the Rangers last month. Jakub Voracek registered his 600th career point on Saturday with an assist and is second on the team in scoring (27 points) while Couturier has recorded eight of his 26 points in eight games this month. Hart has stopped 66-of-75 shots over his first three NHL starts, but Gordon told reporters he had not made a decision on his starter for Sunday's contest.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (15-14-5): Kevin Hayes is riding a six-game point streak during which he has recorded five goals and seven assists to push his season total to 29 points - one behind team leader Mika Zibanejad. Chris Kreider scored his club-high 16th goal on Saturday and Jimmy Vesey notched an assist to give him seven points in his last eight contests. Henrik Lundqvist (10-9-5, 2.87 goals-against average, .914 save percentage) likely will make the last start before the holiday break after being rested for two games in favor of backup Alexandar Georgiev (5-5-0).

OVERTIME

1. New York D Brady Skjei, who played in his 200th NHL game on Saturday, has recorded two of his 11 points in the last three contests.

2. The Flyers scored on the power play Saturday for just the second time in 14 games (2-for-35).

3. The Rangers are 7-for-7 on the penalty kill over their last two games after giving up eight power-play goals in their previous six contests.

Preview: Red Wings at Maple Leafs
Gracenote
Dec 23, 2018

Mitch Marner looks to continue his offensive surge as the Toronto Maple Leafs attempt to extend their point streak to five games when they host the struggling Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. The 21-year-old Marner has scored in four consecutive games after notching two goals and an assist for his second straight three-point effort in Saturday’s 5-3 win over the New York Rangers.

Marner, who will be a restricted free agent in the offseason, has collected six goals and three assists during his four-game point streak and leads the team with 50 points in 36 games after finishing with a career-high 69 in 82 contests last campaign. The Red Wings were in a good spot in the Eastern Conference standings early this month but now sit much closer to last place in the Atlantic Division after losing five of their last six contests (1-4-1). Detroit had a 34-23 advantage in shots on Saturday but struggled to get the puck past Roberto Luongo in a 2-1 loss to Florida after posting a promising 4-1 triumph at Carolina two nights earlier. "It's another frustrating loss,” Red Wings veteran Thomas Vanek told reporters after scoring the team's lone goal. “We need to score, I need to score more. It takes us 10, 12 scoring chances to get something. We had two power plays in the third and got some good looks, but good looks aren’t good enough when you’re losing games.”

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Detroit, Sportsnet, Sportsnet360, TVA (Toronto)

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (15-17-5): Dylan Larkin originally was awarded an assist on Vanek’s goal on Saturday, but it later was taken away - ending his nine-game point streak. Larkin tops the team in goals (15) and points (34) while Gustav Nyquist is the second-most productive player with 31 points, but he has been kept off the scoresheet in two straight games. Andreas Athanasiou (11 goals, 20 points) was a late scratch against the Panthers due to an upper-body injury and is questionable for Sunday.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (24-10-2): Defenseman Morgan Rielly continued to add to his resume for Norris Trophy consideration by recording a goal and an assist in Saturday’s win, giving him nine of his 42 points over the last four games. John Tavares has netted four of his team-best 23 tallies in the last four contests and became the third Maple Leaf this season to reach 40 points by notching two assists on Saturday. Toronto, which recently lost Zach Hyman for at least three weeks to an ankle injury, saw Tyler Ennis suffer a broken ankle against the Rangers.

OVERTIME

1. Detroit D Trevor Daley is slated to play in his 1,000th NHL game on Sunday while C Luke Glendening is expected to suit up for his 400th.

2. Toronto C Patrick Marleau scored his 545th career goal on Saturday to pass Maurice Richard for 30th place on the all-time list.

3. The Original Six rivals split their first two meetings this season, with each team winning on the road.

Preview: Kings at Golden Knights
Gracenote
Dec 22, 2018

The Vegas Golden Knights continue to spin their wheels as far as wins and losses go but keep getting rewarded for their setbacks as they host the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday. Vegas had its six-game home winning streak snapped after dropping a 4-3 overtime decision to Montreal on Saturday, but is a solid 4-1-2 in its last seven contests overall.

Los Angeles, which has the fewest points in the league, has won consecutive games for third time this season with Saturday's 3-2 overtime victory in San Jose. The Kings were bolstered by the return of Ilya Kovalchuk, who scored twice - including the winner - in his first game since missing 10 with an ankle injury. Los Angeles exacted a tiny measure of revenge with a 5-1 victory in Las Vegas on Dec. 8 after the Golden Knights swept them 4-0 in the first round of the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs - all one-goal games. That offensive explosion tied a season high for the Kings, who are last in the league in scoring at 2.25 goals per game.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS West (Los Angeles), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Las Vegas)

ABOUT THE KINGS (13-20-3): The club does not have a player with a double-digit goal total as Dustin Brown's nine lead the way followed by Anze Kopitar (team-high 22 points) and Alex Iafallo with eight apiece. Kovalchuk has seven of his 424 career goals this season - his first back in the NHL after playing five years in the Kontinental Hockey League. Defenseman Dion Phaneuf (team-worst minus-17) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, retroactive to Dec. 11 when he suffered an upper-body injury versus Buffalo.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (20-15-3): Brandon Pirri, who led the AHL with 41 points upon his call-up from the Chicago Wolves, scored twice versus Montreal and has three goals in two games since replacing the injured Max Pacioretty (lower body). William Karlsson (club-most 29 points) had two assists Saturday, giving him seven points (five goals) in his last seven games. Malcolm Subban (0-5-0, 3.48 goals-against average, .881 save percentage in six games) will likely get the start in goal Sunday with Marc-Andre Fleury starting the last two games, including Thursday's 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

OVERTIME

1. Los Angeles is 1-2-1 in the second of back-to-back games this season while Vegas is 2-4-0.

2. The Kings were 25th in the league on the power play (14.7 percent) after scoring on their only chance Saturday, making them 2-for-15 in their last six games, and 29th in penalty killing (75.0).

3. The Golden Knights are 17-2-0 on Sunday - playoffs included - in club history while Los Angeles is 4-0 on Sundays this season.

Preview: Coyotes at Sharks
Gracenote
Dec 22, 2018

The San Jose Sharks were optimistic heading into their four-game homestand after having earned points in 10 of their previous 11 contests at SAP Center (9-1-1). The positivity may be lacking Sunday as the Sharks remain in search of their first win on the stretch at home when they face the Arizona Coyotes.

San Jose began the homestand Thursday with a 5-3 setback against Winnipeg and suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to Los Angeles two days later despite rallying from a two-goal deficit to earn a point. Captain Joe Pavelski scored his team-leading 23rd goal and defenseman Erik Karlsson extended his assist streak to eight games by setting up a pair of tallies for the Sharks, who posted a 5-3 victory at Arizona on Dec. 8 in the first meeting of the season between the Pacific Division rivals. Arizona halted a three-game slide and salvaged the finale of its three-game homestand Saturday with a 6-4 win over Colorado. The Coyotes squandered a three-goal lead in the third period before receiving a huge effort from Brad Richardson, who scored goals 3:27 apart late in the session to give the team only its second triumph in nine contests.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Arizona Plus, NBCS California (San Jose)

ABOUT THE COYOTES (15-18-2): Richardson's two-goal performance against his former team Saturday gave him the team lead (10) and marked the fifth time in his career he has reached double digits. The 33-year-old, who halted his six-game drought, scored a personal-best 14 goals with the Avalanche in 2006-07. Clayton Keller notched an assist Saturday for his team-leading 24th point but has gone 10 contests without a goal as Arizona matched the total from its previous four games.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (19-12-6): Pavelski has been tallying at a solid pace as he enters Sunday with a three-game streak and has scored 10 goals over his last 13 contests. The 34-year-old already has surpassed his total of 22 tallies from last season and is well on his way to the fifth career 30-goal campaign. Defenseman Brent Burns, who is two games shy of 1,000 for his career, recorded an assist Saturday for his first point since he notched his 600th in the NHL on Dec. 16 versus Chicago.

OVERTIME

1. Karlsson has notched 10 assists during his streak but has gone 14 games without a goal.

2. Ten of Arizona's 12 forwards landed on the scoresheet Saturday, as did four of its six defensemen.

3. San Jose C Joe Thornton's next assist will be the 1,041st of his career, moving him past Marcel Dionne for 10th place on the all-time list.

Preview: Islanders at Stars
Gracenote
Dec 23, 2018

The New York Islanders seek their fourth win in five contests when they conclude their four-game road trip Sunday against the Dallas Stars. New York defeated Detroit in a shootout at home before beginning its trek with victories at Colorado and Arizona, but the streak was halted with Thursday's 4-2 setback against Vegas.

The Islanders held a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by reigning Calder Trophy winner Mathew Barzal and Brock Nelson but fell apart and suffered their second loss to the Golden Knights in nine days. New York had been stingy on the road prior to the defeat, allowing a total of four tallies in its previous three contests - all victories. Dallas managed to end its four-game losing streak on the road Saturday as it edged Minnesota 2-1 in overtime after squandering a lead late in the third period. Alexander Radulov set up captain Jamie Benn's goal 1:58 into the third before scoring at 4:50 of the extra session to give the Stars their second win in seven overall contests.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New York), FS Southwest Plus (Dallas)

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (17-13-4): Nelson's goal against Vegas was his 12th of the season, tying him with captain Anders Lee for the team lead. The 27-year-old Nelson has scored in back-to-back games after netting one in his previous 14 contests. Barzal's goal Thursday was his 28th point of the season - keeping him tied for first on the club with Josh Bailey, who is riding a four-game assist streak.

ABOUT THE STARS (18-15-3): Jason Spezza returned to the lineup Saturday after missing two games with an illness and registered three shots and a plus-1 rating in 16 minutes, 19 seconds of ice time while going 13-4 on faceoffs. Martin Hanzal, who has appeared in only six contests this season, was scratched Saturday because of a sore back. Dallas could be without Jason Dickinson on Sunday as the 23-year-old center exited the win over the Wild after two periods with an upper-body injury.

OVERTIME

1. New York's Barry Trotz needs three victories to pull even with Al Arbour (782) for fourth place on the all-time coaching list while G Thomas Greiss is three wins shy of tying Rollie Melanson (77) for sixth in franchise history.

2. Stars G Anton Khudobin is expected to get the start against the Islanders after Ben Bishop made 30 saves on Saturday.

3. Dallas has outscored New York 16-4 over their last three meetings - all victories by the Stars.
