Selected notes for Sunday: There shouldn't be much surprise with the names at the top of our Sunday selections. Roy Oswalt is the odd man out of the top quartet, primarily because of some small lingering concern over his bruised index finger, but even so, his 8-2 career mark against San Diego gives us reason to still feel good about him. … Joba Chamberlain's most recent start against the Red Sox might have been the "light bulb" finally going off in his head on how to be a solid starter, and we expect the strikeouts to continue against the Orioles. … Matt Garza is 5-1 with a 2.85 ERA against Boston for his career, but don't give a loss to Josh Beckett just yet. After all, he did strike out 10 Rays at Fenway on Opening Day. … After that, it's really a crap shoot, but we liked what we saw in Brett Cecil's debut and are willing to take a chance on him against Oakland. … Bartolo Colon is actually historically decent against the Rangers, with a 17-5 record and a 3.44 ERA for his career. … Jeff Weaver should get the Giants out, but the Dodgers might not score up to their usual levels sans Manny Ramirez and facing Tim Lincecum, making a win more challenging. … Dallas Braden is ranked No. 22 primarily because the Blue Jays, hitting .292 for the season, are such a strong offense. … And of course, Brett Myers, with an 0-3 record and 9.00 ERA versus the Braves in his past three starts against them, narrowly avoids the cellar over Scott Olsen, with his career 8.47 ERA against the Diamondbacks. Those are ERAs only a mother could love.
Now batting (Saturday)

Hitters' count
• Evan Longoria, 3B, Rays: A career .314 hitter at Fenway Park, Longoria is also hitting .333 against Boston starter Jon Lester.
• Miguel Cabrera, 1B, Tigers: Cabrera has seven career home runs at Progressive Field and two career blasts off Fausto Carmona.
• Chris Iannetta, C, Rockies: Iannetta had two home runs and eight RBIs against Marlins pitching in only 17 at-bats last season.
• Ryan Theriot, SS, Cubs: Miller Park means happy days for Theriot, who is hitting .411 in 56 career at-bats there.
• Hanley Ramirez, SS, Marlins: Han-Ram boasts a mighty 1.167 OPS against Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa and is a .340 hitter at Coors Field.
• Nick Markakis, OF, Orioles: He's glad the Yankees are starting Phil Hughes. He's 4-for-8 against the youngster with two doubles and three RBIs.
• Raul Ibanez, OF, Phillies: Three home runs in 16 at-bats against Javier Vazquez bodes well for an Ibanez power surge at home. • Robinson Cano, 2B, Yankees: Cano certainly doesn't mind the trip to Baltimore, where he has hit .311 with four home runs and 16 RBIs. Maybe it's Boog's ribs?
Pitchers' count
• Ryan Braun, OF, Brewers: Braun has been hot since returning from his back problem, but is hitting only .118 against Ryan Dempster.
• Gerald Laird, C, Tigers: He has as many hits in his past eight games as he does in his career against Fausto Carmona: one.
• Jason Giambi, OF, Athletics: Giambi is only 1-for-10 against Toronto starter Brian Tallet, with three strikeouts.
• Emilio Bonifacio, 3B, Marlins: With four strikeouts in seven at-bats against Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa, there's little chance of him reaching base, where he'd likely just get caught stealing again anyway, as he's 0-for-May.
• Cristian Guzman, SS, Nationals: Guzman is hitting only .154 at Chase Field, where no one else seems to have problems knocking the cover off the ball.
• Dioner Navarro, C, Rays: The Rays' backstop is a meager 12-for 63 (.190) at Fenway Park, which, sadly, is an improvement over his 2009 to-date average.
• Kevin Kouzmanoff, 3B, Padres: Not much pop against the Astros for the Kouz, with only a .378 slugging percentage against them for his career.

If you're hardcore

• Chris Coghlan, 2B/OF, Marlins: Just called up, Coghlan was 20-for-36 with three HRs, 16 RBIs and 12 runs in his past 10 games for Triple-A New Orleans.
• Ryan Spilborghs, OF, Rockies: Sure he may not be able to beat Colorado's mascot, Dinger, in a staring contest, but he's a .415 career hitter against the Marlins.
• Josh Willingham, OF, Nationals: Yes, he's hitting only .171, but he loves him the Doug Davis, with a .364 career batting average.
• Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Astros: Over the past three years, his best hitting month has been May (.372) and he is .333 in the few times he's met Kevin Correia.
• Ramon Vazquez, 3B, Pirates: It's a very small sample size to be sure, but two at-bats and two hits, including a home run, off John Maine make him a hardcore selection.
Now batting (Sunday)

Hitters' count
• Carl Crawford, OF, Rays: Crawford is hitting .296 against Josh Beckett, including 3-for-8 in their past three meetings, plus he has stolen 22 bases in a row without getting caught.
• Jason Bay, OF, Red Sox: His four home runs against the Rays last season were his most against any American League opponent.
• Bengie Molina, C, Giants: Molina is .316 with a home run in 19 career at-bats against Jeff Weaver.
• Bill Hall, 3B, Brewers: Coming off a hamstring injury, Hall is 4-for-5 in his career against Sean Marshall, including three extra-base hits.
• A.J. Pierzynski, C, White Sox: The White Sox catcher has two home runs in 15 career at-bats against Texas starter Vicente Padilla.
• Matt Holliday, OF, Athletics: In his past seven games (through May 8) Holliday has three home runs and eight RBIs. Now he's getting relatively untested Brett Cecil. Advantage: Holliday.
• Jorge Cantu, 1B, Marlins: Since 2006, he's batting .414 against the Rockies and Aaron Cook isn't likely to change that trend.
• Jason Kubel, DH, Twins: You know what the number 607 means? It's not only the area code for Binghamton, N.Y., but it's also the 2008 batting average for Kubel against the Mariners.
Pitchers' count
• Justin Upton, OF, Diamondbacks: Upton hit only .182 versus the Nationals last season, and went 0-for-3 against Scott Olsen in their only prior meeting.
• Jayson Werth, OF, Phillies: He struggled a bit in the first series against the Braves, going only 1-for-11 … and that was in Philadelphia.
• Placido Polanco, 2B, Tigers: Has more strikeouts against the Indians over the past three seasons than against any other team, and that's saying something, since he rarely strikes out.
• Chris Getz, 2B, White Sox: He's batting .190 for May through Thursday and only .250 at home this season.
• Jason Varitek, C, Red Sox: Has a career average of .143 against Matt Garza, and we wouldn't be surprised to see Varitek given Sunday off as a result.
• Carlos Delgado, 1B Mets: Only 2-for-9 against Ian Snell and four strikeouts to boot.
• Jeff Francoeur, OF, Braves: It may be tempting to play Francoeur in Philadelphia, but the .206 career mark against Brett Myers says otherwise.
• Hank Blalock, DH. Rangers: His batting average is neither big, nor fat against Bartolo Colon. In fact it's a hit-starved .162.
If you're hardcore

• Mike Fontenot, 2B, Cubs: Milwaukee brings out the best in Fontenot, to the tune of a .360 batting average; plus he's 3-for-5 against Jeff Suppan.
• David Eckstein, 2B, Padres: The Mighty Mite is owned in only 6 percent of ESPN Standard Leagues, but he owns a solid .303 average against Roy Oswalt.
• Michael Cuddyer, OF, Twins: The 3 percent of you who own him might want to get him in the lineup against Erik Bedard, as Cuddyer is 5-for-15 against Bedard with three RBIs.
• Juan Pierre, OF, Dodgers: With "Manny being Banny," Pierre should see a surge in ownership this week, and he's 3-for-9 career against Tim Lincecum.
• Russell Branyan, 1B. Mariners: Still owned in just under half of ESPN Standard Leagues, Branyan has three home runs off current Twins pitchers, including one against Nick Blackburn.
Triage

Injury list: Out
• Manny Ramirez, OF, Dodgers (50-game suspension)
• Rick Ankiel, OF, Cardinals (15-day disabled list, shoulder contusion)
• Jose Molina, C, Yankees (quad): The New York Daily News reports manager Joe Girardi expects to have to place Molina on the 15-day disabled list.
• Tony Clark, 1B, Diamondbacks (15-day disabled list, right hand)
• Shawn Kelley, P, Mariners (15-day disabled list, oblique tear)
Injury list: Day-to-day
• Brandon Phillips, 2B, Reds (illness): The flu is making its way through the Reds clubhouse, with Phillips and Joey Votto the latest victims. They may be back by the weekend, but someone else in the lineup may be suffering by then.
• David Ortiz, DH, Red Sox (neck): Ortiz joined fellow scratches Kevin Youkilis and Jacoby Ellsbury on the shelf Thursday with assorted aches and pains.
• Derrek Lee, 1B, Cubs (neck): Lee could be back in the lineup as early as Friday, but after a lengthy flight from Houston to Milwaukee, we don't anticipate the stiffness in his neck to be much better.
• Anibal Sanchez, P, Marlins (shoulder): Sanchez left Thursday's start in the fifth inning with pain in his surgically repaired right shoulder. We should know more after the X-rays and MRIs are all done.
• Shawn Riggans, C, Rays (shoulder): Riggans, who was expected back with the Rays as early as this weekend, had to leave a rehab assignment in the minors after a throw to first base.
Weather concerns
• The weekend's weatherproof games: Cubs-Brewers, Royals-Twins, Padres-Astros, Mariners-Twins and Nationals-Diamondbacks.
• The Marlins and Rockies are in for a cold and quite possibly rainy Saturday in Denver.
• Rain may linger in Baltimore and Philadelphia on Saturday, with some showers left over from Friday sticking around for the start of the weekend.
• Ohio is also headed for some wet times on Saturday as there's a slight chance of thunderstorms in both Cleveland and Cincinnati.
• Sunday should be clear skies across the country, except in Boston where it will be windy with possible showers.

From ESPN.com's Tristan H. Cockcroft: "Kawakami absorbed his fourth consecutive loss in his return from a shoulder injury, and while his stat line Tuesday of two runs in five innings might not sound so bad, a closer look reveals a few warning signs. It took him 113 pitches to get even that far into the game, an extremely inefficient rate, and he surrendered 11 baserunners, more than two per frame. I can't help but wonder whether he's truly pitching at 100 percent.

Wainwright allowed seven earned runs on nine hits in six innings during Tuesday's loss to the Phillies.
Wainwright struck out five, but allowed two home runs and walked two batters. He's off to a slow start this season, but nothing that should be too disconcerting.

Volquez threw eight scoreless innings and allowed just three hits to improve to 4-2 in Tuesday's victory over Florida.
After two poor outings to start the season, Volquez has given up just four runs over 27 innings in his last four starts.

Snell threw 94 pitches in five innings Tuesday after hurling a major-league high 131 in his previous start.
Snell said after the game that he wasn't able to dial it up a notch when he needed to. "It didn't feel like I had anything over 94 or 95 in my tank," Snell told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I tried my best, and that's all I can do." Snell wouldn't say whether his high pitch count in his last start led to his reduced effectiveness Tuesday. "You can think what you want, but I don't know. I can't tell you that," he replied. "I'm not going to make any excuses." Manager John Russell simply said that the three two-strike hits Snell allowed ruined his night. "He couldn't finish hitters off," Russell said. "If he does that, it's a different game."

Marshall allowed five runs in seven innings in Tuesday's loss to the Giants.
Marshall left the game allowing just three runs, but two runners he left on base score after an Aaron Rowand double in the eighth. Marshall only recorded one strikeout, but also only walked one batter.

Suppan allowed three runs in 5.2 innings on five hits and three walks, but picked up his second win of the season on Tuesday.
Suppan didn't pitch particularly well, but was able to get some run support and picked up a win. You're playing with fire if you have Suppan in your lineup.

Oswalt, who is still looking for his first win, had an x-ray Wednesday that confirmed the earlier diagnosis of a bone bruise on his right index finger. Oswalt draws the slumping Padres in his next start, so perhaps that first win is right around the corner.

Volstad gave up three runs over six innings with five strikeouts and three walks, but took the loss Tuesday against the Reds.
A decent outing from Volstad, who has seen improved strikeout totals. He's struck out five or more batters in all but one start this season.

Cook allowed just one run, in the first inning, but got a no-decision in Tuesday's loss to the Padres.
Cook has lowered his ERA by almost five runs over his last three outings, which only illustrates the power of selective endpoints. Facing the Padres in his last two outings certainly helps.

Lincecum allowed just two runs over seven innings while recording seven strikeouts in Tuesday's win over the Cubs.
The Cubs rested Ryan Theriot, Alfonso Soriano, Aramis Ramirez, Milton Bradley, and Geovany Soto on Tuesday, and it didn't take much for the 2008 Cy Young winner to mow through a makeshift lineup.

Reyes allowed three runs in six innings Tuesday against Toronto, but did not figure in on the decision after the Indians bullpen surrendered seven runs in the seventh inning.
Reyes also struck out five while surrendering just a single walk. Free passes had been plaguing Reyes this season so it's nice to see him right the ship, at least temporarily.

Chamberlain (thumb) should be able to make his start on Sunday after popping a blood vessel during batting practice Saturday, the team's official site reports.
He received treatment during Saturday's game, so the belief that he'll be OK is based on that right now. Things could change if he warms up and still is experiencing problems with it, however. Brett Tomko could end up making a spot start in Chamberlain's place if necessary.

"The 'Padilla Flotilla' was in full force Tuesday, as Padilla mastered the Mariners for eight innings, allowing but one hit and one run in a 7-2 victory. He has back-to-back quality starts, but those should speak more to the ineptitude of his opponents -- the Athletics being the previous one -- than his ability. Seattle, to note, has totaled 40 runs in its past 13 games against right-handed starters, and has a .696 team OPS against that side, Oakland, incidentally, ranks dead last in baseball in team OPS, at .644."

Colon struck out seven Royals in five innings, but still picked up the loss. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits and two walks.
He has the misfortune of starting opposite Zack Greinke, so Colon would have had to have thrown a complete gem to walk away with a W. Colon has 13 strikeouts to four walks in his past two starts.

Bedard pitched seven strong innings Thursday, allowing one run and seven hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
Bedard's lone run allowed came on a solo homer. Other than that he was barely touched, giving only a double in addition to a handful of harmless singles. Good to see him bounce back from his last start in which he didn't have his best stuff. Bedard's K:BB now stands at 39:6.

Blackburn gave up nine runs (six earned) over 3.1 innings in Tuesday's loss to Detroit. He walked three batters and gave up two home runs.
Blackburn was coming off two strong outings, so we wouldn't get too worried about this off night.

Davies gave up 6 earned runs and 11 baserunners in a no-decision Tuesday night vs. Chicago. After an impressive start to the season, Davies has now given up 16 earned run in 15 innings (9.60 ERA) in his last three starts.
He lasted just four innings in the start, and struggled against a team he dominated in his first start of the season. Until Davies gets things ironed out, he likely shouldn't be in your rotation now

Loux held the A's to one run over seven innings to pick up the win on Tuesday. He allowed five hits and a walk while striking out three in the outing.
Loux is not someone to rely upon regularly, but he's at least established himself to be the last Angel fill-in pitcher to go once they get their injured starters back. A K:BB of 11:9 over 29.1 innings is a pretty good indicator that tougher times are coming - even if it doesn't happen in his next start (a home start against the Royals).

Cecil impressive Tuesday, but : "Cecil had an impressive major league debut, going six innings and holding the Indians to two runs (one earned) on six hits Tuesday. He threw 61 of 96 pitches for strikes and didn't walk a batter. That's quite a change from the Cecil who racked up an 8.31 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in four starts for Triple-A Las Vegas to begin the season. He's at least now matchups-worthy, having been quite the strikeout artist in his minor league career (194 K's in 185 2/3 career innings), but be prepared for him to struggle against some of the more loaded offenses in the league."

Braden struck out six Angels in six innings Tuesday but still picked up the loss.
He started the game well, but a Bobby Crosby error in the second opened the door to a two-run inning. Four more hits and one earned run followed that inning. It's worth noting that Braden has not allowed a home run in his past four starts, and he has faced four good offenses (Angels, Rangers, Rays, Jays).

Garza threw his second straight spectacular game on Tuesday, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits over eight innings.
The three runs were off of home runs on fastballs he threw down the middle of the plate. Other than that he rolled, throwing only 99 pitches.

Beckett gave up three runs over six innings with five strikeouts and one walk to improve to 3-2 in Tuesday's win over the Yankees.
Beckett bounced back from two bad outings to win in a tough environment. He'd walked three or more batters in four of his first five starts, so hopefully Tuesday's control is a sign of things to come.

<!-- end mod-article-title --> <!-- begin story body --> On tap: A much lighter week than the one before, Week 6 features a rekindling of the Red Sox-Angels recent postseason rivalry in Anaheim; the Blue Jays finally getting tested by games against their chief American League East rivals, with three against the Yankees to begin the week; and the Manny Ramirez-less Dodgers getting a rematch with their NLCS foes the Phillies, with three games in Philadelphia.
Speaking of the Phillies, both they and the Nationals get an extra game this week, with a doubleheader scheduled between the two on Saturday in the nation's capital.

Weather report

Oh, sure, now we get those proverbial "May flowers," a week after a packed one on the baseball schedule. Looking at the early weather reports, Week 6 should be a beautiful one, with few games dealing with a high probability of rain. There's slight risk of rain in Chicago, Cleveland and Pittsburgh in the early portion of the week, but that's about it, and that's not at all surprising considering those are the three cities that have been most threatened by rain in the month of May since 2001.
Weatherproof games: Yankees at Blue Jays (3, Tue-Thu); White Sox at Blue Jays (3, Fri-Sun); Marlins at Brewers (3, Tue-Thu); Reds at Diamondbacks (3, Mon-Wed); Red Sox at Mariners (3, Fri-Sun); Indians at Rays (4, Thu-Sun); Tigers at Twins (3, Tue-Thu).
Load up: Hitters

The teams listed below have the most favorable overall hitting matchups, accounting for recent performance, strength of opponents and ballpark factors.
tam.gif
Rays (@BAL-2, CLE-4): This team has scored 150 runs in 23 games against the Orioles since the beginning of last season, 6.5 per contest, including 70 in 12 contests at Camden Yards during that span. But it's not like the two games in Baltimore are the ones you're wondering about; it's the four against Cleveland that might not strike you as hitting-friendly matchups. Consider this: The four Indians starters the Rays are scheduled to face -- their entire rotation minus Cliff Lee -- have a combined 4-7 record, 6.80 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 18 starts, each of them sporting an ERA north of six. Expect a big week from the Rays, who had scored 52 runs in winning six of their past eight games through this past Thursday.
tor.gif
Blue Jays (NYY-3, CHW-3): Even if you want to make the case that this is Toronto's first real test against an elite AL East team, the Blue Jays face two left-handed Yankee starters, CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte, and they have an .881 OPS against southpaws this season, third-best in the majors. This is also an offense that scored 14 runs against Gavin Floyd and the White Sox on April 24, and they'll face Floyd again Sunday, not to mention another left-hander (John Danks) on Friday. I find it hard to believe this is the week that Aaron Hill, Adam Lind, Marco Scutaro and the hot-out-of-the-gate Blue Jays finally begin cooling off.
was.gif
Nationals (@SF-3, PHI-4): News flash, this team can hit! Each of the Nationals' starting outfielders has an OPS of .876 or better, and each of their starting infielders has a batting average of .328 or better. This team has totaled 32 runs in five games against the Phillies already this year, and Philadelphia sports the second-highest ERA of any National League team (5.39). Enjoy it while it lasts, as Nick Johnson shouldn't be expected to stay healthy, Cristian Guzman shouldn't be able to maintain a near-.400 batting average, and Elijah Dukes shouldn't be able to remain this maddeningly consistent. But, at least for this week, I'd bank on the Nats.
chc.gif
Cubs (SD-3, HOU-3): The Cubs tend to dominate at Wrigley Field, winners of 69 of their past 102 home games (67.6 percent) and outscoring their opponents by 138 runs during that span (an average 1.4-run margin of victory per game). Kosuke Fukudome, Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez all have an OPS more than 75 points higher at home than on the road since the beginning of 2008, and every member of the Opening Day lineup has an .800-plus career OPS at Wrigley except for Ryan Theriot, whose batting average there is .302, and Milton Bradley, who has played all of 13 games there. That alleviates concerns that the Cubbies draw Jake Peavy, Chris Young and Roy Oswalt as opponents in three of their six games.
Tristan's sleeper hitters

Russell Branyan, 1B/3B, Mariners: Has averaged one homer per 11.5 ABs 2008-09; 5 HRs, 1.001 OPS in 14 career games at Rangers Ballpark
Billy Butler, 1B, Royals: .441 BA, 2 HRs, 9 RBIs, 1.208 OPS in his past 9 games
Pedro Feliz, 3B, Phillies: .348 BA, 10 RBIs, .937 OPS in 14 home games in 2009; .263 BA, .912 OPS versus left-handers in 2009
Franklin Gutierrez, OF, Mariners: .433 BA, 2 HRs, 1.148 OPS in his past 8 games; .370 BA, .874 OPS in 11 career games at Rangers Ballpark
Jason Kubel, OF, Twins: .347 BA, 1.006 OPS versus right-handers in 2009
Kazuo Matsui, 2B, Astros: .348 BA, .889 OPS in 66 career games at Coors Field
Kendry Morales, 1B/OF, Angels: .286 BA, 2 HRs, .820 OPS in 11 career games at Rangers Ballpark; .301 BA, .957 OPS versus right-handers in 2009
Mike Napoli, C, Angels: .359 BA, 3 HRs, 1.200 OPS in 15 career games at Rangers Ballpark; 3-for-6, 2 HRs in 2 games versus Red Sox in 2009
Ryan Spilborghs, OF, Rockies: .325 BA,.909 OPS in 135 career games at Coors Field; career OPS versus left-handers 110 points higher than versus right-handers
Jayson Werth, OF, Phillies: .276 BA, .814 OPS in 128 career games at Citizens Bank Park; .304 BA, .973 OPS versus left-handers in 2009
Load up: Stolen bases

Favorable matchups listed below are selected based upon opponents' catchers allowing a high rate of steals attempts and/or having low caught-stealing percentages.
sfo.gif
Giants (WAS-3, NYM-4): This Giants team has shown a tendency to take risks on the base paths in home games, having racked up 11 of their 18 team steals at AT&T Park (in 14 games, compared to 13 on the road), and if there's any prime example of that, it's that Pablo Sandoval is a perfect 2-for-2 in the category at home. With Brian Schneider still ailing for the Mets -- he has added a calf injury to his previous back problems -- the Giants should be able to capitalize on a set of weak-armed backstops, including Ramon Castro, who has nailed only 20 percent of opposing baserunners (12 of 60) since 2007.
laa.gif
Angels (BOS-3, @TEX-3): Chone Figgins might have been your pick to lead this team in steals in 2009, but through this past Thursday's games, you might be surprised to learn that Bobby Abreu paces the Angels with 11 (a full-year pace of 74). Abreu routinely beats up on Jason Varitek and the Red Sox; he has swiped 10 bags successfully in 11 tries in 53 games against Boston since 2006, and that includes the two he had in the teams' recent three-game series. If there's any team that might have caught wind of what Carl Crawford recently did to Varitek and planned to exploit the catcher down the road, Mike Scioscia's is a prime one.
cle.gif
Indians (CHW-3, @TB-4): The Indians ripped apart the base paths against the White Sox in 2008, swiping 11 bags (in 15 chances) in their 18 meetings, not that it's shocking considering A.J. Pierzynski has ranked as one of the worst catchers at gunning down opposing baserunners since the beginning of last season. He has surrendered 116 stolen bases since Opening Day 2008 and only gunned down 23 base stealers, a pathetic 16.5 percent. Besides the obvious Grady Sizemore, the Indians are generating impressive speed from Shin-Soo Choo (six steals), Asdrubal Cabrera (five) and Ben Francisco (four), and I expect their wheels will keep spinning this week.
lad.gif
Dodgers (@PHI-3, @FLA-3): Carlos Ruiz is back for the Phillies but that's hardly a good thing; he has surrendered 69 steals (out of 91 chances) to opposing baserunners since the beginning of last season and 137 (in 188 chances) in 254 games behind the plate in his career. Here's the other thing: The Marlins tend to use Ronny Paulino at catcher when facing a left-handed starter, the Dodgers will trot out two lefties in that series (Eric Stults and Clayton Kershaw) and Paulino has served up 17 steals in his 14 games behind the plate thus far. Newly crowned left fielder Juan Pierre should thrive as he returns to his old stomping grounds of Land Shark Stadium (formerly Dolphin Stadium), and I'd bank on the team as a whole taking more chances on the base paths to make up for the run production they lost to Manny Ramirez's suspension.
Load up: Pitchers

The teams listed below have the most favorable overall pitching matchups, accounting for recent performance, strength of opponents and ballpark factors.
chc.gif
Cubs (SD-3, HOU-3): The Cubs tend to dominate at Wrigley Field, winners of … OK, you get the idea, this team is gooooooood at Wrigley. That's especially true for the rotation, where Ted Lilly has a 3.79 ERA and 1.11 WHIP for his career; Ryan Dempster has won 15 of his past 18 decisions and registered a 2.98 ERA in his past 22 starts; and Rich Harden has a 3.25 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 13.5 strikeouts-per-nine innings ratio in 10 starts since coming over from Oakland in a trade in July. The Cubs need those three, as well as Sean Marshall, he of the 4.12 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 30 starts since 2007, to maintain that level of performance with Carlos Zambrano on the DL. Considering they'll be facing two of the game's 10 weakest offenses, I'd say no one will even notice Zambrano is gone.
det.gif
Tigers (@MIN-3, OAK-3): Admit it, you're excited that Dontrelle Willis is due back in their rotation on Wednesday, right? Right? OK, so that's not why I made the pick; I did so because between Armando Galarraga, Edwin Jackson, Rick Porcello and Justin Verlander (back-to-back stellar outings), this team currently has four other starters you can rely on in fantasy. Or, at least, I can claim that with confidence this week when the Tigers face the two weakest offenses in the American League; Minnesota's .637 team OPS is second-to-last and Oakland's .573 is by far the worst. Get ready to exploit those matchups!
cin.gif
Reds (@ARI-3, @SD-3): One of the primary reasons Bob Melvin was fired by the Diamondbacks is that he couldn't squeeze much life out of his offense, which not only ranked dead last in baseball in runs per game (3.7), but third-from-worst in team OPS (.677). It's going to take time for A.J. Hinch to right the ship, but in the meantime Arizona should be expected to keep up its strikeout-happy ways; this team has the second-worst team contact rate in the game (its 75.8 percent tops only Florida's 75.4). Oh, and then the Reds head west to Petco Park from there. I think we all know what to expect from a trip to that canyon-esque venue.
kan.gif
Royals (@OAK-2, BAL-4): Amazingly, this team got a four-inning, six-run stinker from Kyle Davies this past Tuesday and still managed to win six consecutive games with a 2.64 ERA (the Davies outing included). So if you want to claim that the Royals' staff is in decline, well, you'd be wrong. Zack Greinke is off to the most surprisingly dominant start of any starting pitcher, Joakim Soria is healthy and a rock-solid closer once more, Brian Bannister is 3-0 with a 1.48 ERA in his first four starts of the season, and this schedule includes games against the woeful Oakland offense and a Baltimore team with a ho-hum .708 road OPS.

Rankings: Tristan's two-starts

For those owners trying to decide between two- and one-start pitchers, my recommended cut-off point (remember that this can vary from league to league) this week would most likely come around No. 11, Mike Pelfrey. I would also begin slotting in my one-start bargain picks around No. 18, Jordan Zimmermann.
Two must-starts: Roy Halladay, Johan Santana.
1. Matt Cain (SF) -- Tue-WAS (Zimmermann), Sun-NYM (Pelfrey): 3.42 ERA, 1.25 WHIP in 60 career home games; 2.36 ERA, 0.93 WHIP in six career starts versus Nationals
2. Randy Johnson (SF) -- Mon-WAS (Cabrera), Sat-NYM (Santana): 5-3, 2.07 ERA, 1.03 WHIP in 10 career starts at AT&T Park
3. Rich Harden (CHC) -- Tue-SD (Peavy), Sun-HOU (Hampton): 3-1, 3.25 ERA, 1.22 WHIP in 10 career starts at Wrigley Field
4. A.J. Burnett (NYY) -- Tue-@TOR (Halladay), Sun-MIN (Slowey): 22-8, 3.77 ERA, 1.28 WHIP in 40 career games (39 starts) at Rogers Centre
5. Jake Peavy (SD) -- Tue-@CHC (Harden), Sun-CIN (Arroyo)
6. Derek Lowe (ATL) -- Mon-@NYM (Santana), Sun-ARI (Garland)
7. Kevin Slowey (MIN) -- Tue-DET (Galarraga), Sun-@NYY (Burnett)
8. Armando Galarraga (DET) -- Tue-@MIN (Slowey), Sun-OAK (Cahill)
9. Ubaldo Jimenez (COL) -- Tue-HOU (Hampton), Sun-@PIT (Duke): 1-0, 2.57 ERA, 0.86 WHIP in two career starts versus Pirates
10. Clayton Kershaw (LAD) -- Tue-@PHI (Park), Sun-@FLA (TBD)
11. Mike Pelfrey (NYM) -- Tue-ATL (Jurrjens), Sun-@SF (Cain)
12. Zach Duke (PIT) -- Tue-STL (Boggs), Sun-COL (Jimenez): 4.18 ERA, 1.47 WHIP in 50 career starts at PNC Park
13. Jon Garland (ARI) -- Mon-CIN (Arroyo), Sun-@ATL (Lowe): 2-0, 2.33 ERA, 1.22 WHIP in his past four starts
14. Justin Masterson (BOS) -- Tue-@LAA (Ortega), Sun-@SEA (Washburn)
15. Andy Sonnanstine (TB) -- Tue-@BAL (Hendrickson), Sun-CLE (Sowers)
16. Jarrod Washburn (SEA) -- Tue-@TEX (Feldman), Sun-BOS (Masterson)
17. Bronson Arroyo (CIN) -- Mon-@ARI (Garland), Sun-@SD (Peavy): 2-1, 2.11 ERA, 1.27 WHIP in three career starts at Petco Park
18. Jordan Zimmermann (WAS) -- Tue-@SF (Cain), Sun-PHI (Park)
19. Gavin Floyd (CHW) -- Mon-@CLE (Pavano), Sun-@TOR (Halladay)
20. Carl Pavano (CLE) -- Mon-CHW (Floyd), Sat-@TB (Garza): Has back-to-back road wins (13 1/3 IP, 11 H's, 4 ERs)
21. Manny Parra (MIL) -- Tue-FLA (TBD), Sun-@STL (Boggs): 2.81 ERA, 1.50 WHIP in three career starts at Busch Stadium
22. Chan Ho Park (PHI) -- Tue-LAD (Kershaw), Sun-@WAS (Zimmermann)
23. Mike Hampton (HOU) -- Tue-@COL (Jimenez), Sun-@CHC (Harden)
Nine "no thank yous": Marlins spot starter (probably Burke Badenhop or Hayden Penn), Mitchell Boggs, Daniel Cabrera, Trevor Cahill, Scott Feldman, Mark Hendrickson, Anthony Ortega, Sidney Ponson, Jeremy Sowers.
Tristan's one-start bargains

Rick Porcello (DET) -- Sat-OAK (Braden): Athletics' team OPS dead last in MLB (.573)
Koji Uehara (BAL) -- Sat-@KC (Davies): 4.42 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 3.9:1 K-to-BB ratio in five starts
Barry Zito (SF) -- Wed-WAS (Martis): 2-0, 4.30 ERA in four starts versus Nationals in 2007-08
