The painting was pinned up in Rep. Lou Correa's district office in California last month along with the other finalists from the congressman's annual student art competition.
Activist group We the People Rising, which protests undocumented immigrants, has demanded several times that Correa tear down the painting, the Orange County Register reports.

They claim it is 'disrespectful' and violates the separation of church and state.
Correa has refused saying the young woman who painted the artwork earned the spot on his office wall.
'The Statue of Liberty stands for inclusion, acceptance, and freedom. The young woman who painted this is trying very hard to show people that she is an American,' Correa wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday.
'If I took down her painting, I'd be telling the world her experiences don't matter and she did something wrong. This is her country too, and she earned that spot on my wall.'
The activists are now planning to protest outside the congressman's office on September 11.
'It's a bad example for our congressman,' activist Mike McGertrick said.

Correa said he saw nothing controversial about the painting and that taking it down would send the wrong message

'He shouldn't have anything religious in his office... I would like to see our Congress people be right-down-the-line patriotic.
Former GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin was among those to weigh in on the so-called controversy. She shared a story that read: 'Statue of Liberty Painting Found In Congressman's Office, Then America Spots Something Unusual.'

Correa said he saw nothing controversial about the painting.
It comes at a time when President Donald Trump is being criticized for treatment of Muslims.
'You take it in the context of a lady, probably a Muslim American - with all that's going on, she's a proud American,' Correa said. 'That's what it says to me.
'This is an art competition for our high school students. I want out students to express themselves through art. To take it down would signal that this is not welcome and that would send the wrong message.

I believe in the 1st Amendment. This argument is dumb. It's art no matter what I think of it or like it even.

I do too....unfortunately our constitution and inalienable rights such as the 1st Amendment to not mesh with Sharia law.

I get great amusement over what pisses some people off. Surely they can find better things to do with their time.

I have no problem with this painting, it's not advocating violence or anything like that. I concur with Dave, the stuff that makes the news is a reflection of how stupid we are. I suppose some Muslims might be upset with all the makeup some Muslim girl is wearing
