Former Philadelphia Inquirer sportswriter and columnist Stephen A. Smith will end his career with ESPN on May 1, Smith said on his Web site.

Smith rose to prominence on ESPN in the middle of this decade when he served as commentator for the network, principally for basketball. He was so successful that he even had his own television show on the network, but the show never received strong ratings and was canceled.

Another Web site, thebiglead.com, said that Smith and ESPN could not agree on a new contract after the network apprently offered a salary considerably lower than what Smith had been earning.

Smith retained his job at the Inquirer until a couple of years ago.

"It's been a wonderful, wonderful ride, filled with great accomplishments, great memories and, most importantly, great friendships." Smith wrote on his Web site, www.StephenA.com. "It's difficult to express how appreciative I am to everyone at ESPN for all they've done for my career. But nothing lasts forever. It's time to move on."

Smith does not write about what he might do next.

This actually saddens me. I generally watch First Take on ESPN2 with my morning coffee and posting, and he's really the perfect complement to Skip Bayless on their 1st and 10 segments. I mean you have to understand that it's staged hyperbole, just like Bill O'Reilly on Fox News, but they feed off each other well. I didn't care for his as a journalist, but as a talking head I thought he was animated and relatively knowledgable. I hope he finds another TV gig to play to his strengths.

it's hard to pick just one. How about Vitale next, Worthless, every black except Tirico & TJ, Holtz, Mark May for sure. Lots of dead wood IMO!!
