FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- It wouldn't be a New England Patriots game without some drama involving off-the-field strategy.

Pittsburgh Steelers coaches were upset that their coach-to-coach headsets picked up the Patriots' radio broadcast for the majority of the first half of Thursday night's game, which New England went on to win 28-21.

When pressed after the game, an unhappy Mike Tomlin said headset issues have occurred repeatedly in New England.

"That's always the case. Yes. I said what I said," the Steelers coach said.
Blake Jones, NFL director of football operations, went down to the field to help with the headsets. The league described the reception problem as "intermittent."
When asked if he got a satisfactory resolution, Tomlin said: "Eventually." Tomlin is a member of the league's competition committee.

Because it was not a complete system failure, New England's coaches were not required to shut down their headsets during the repairs. However, the Patriots said they experienced issues as well.

"We had a lot of problems," Bill Belichick said. "We had to switch headphones a couple of times. The communication system wasn't very good. We deal with that, it seems, weekly.
"They told us they were on the verge of shutting it off, but then I guess they got it working. I don't know, but it was a problem the whole game. We almost had to switch helmets with [Tom] Brady there at the end. Couldn't get the plays in to him. It was a problem all night."

In a statement released Thursday night, NFL spokesman Michael Signora said both teams' communications equipment is provided by the league.
"In the first quarter of tonight's game, the Pittsburgh coaches experienced interference in their headsets caused by a stadium power infrastructure issue, which was exacerbated by the inclement weather," the statement read. "The coaches' communications equipment, including the headsets, is provided by the NFL for both clubs' use on game day. Once the power issue was addressed, the equipment functioned properly with no additional issues."

The Patriots have been dogged by accusations of cheating and using questionable methods to gain a competitive advantage, which ESPN detailed this week in an Outside the Lines report on the NFL's investigations into videotaping of opposing teams' signals and the use of deflated footballs.

When asked whether he was surprised the coaches' headsets went out in New England, defensive end Cam Heyward said, "No, but I'm not going to make excuses."
Inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons, who handles the defensive calls from coaches, said the calls were not smooth Thursday night, but "with no-huddle [offense], that's always going to be a problem."

"I'm not going there [about New England's past]," Timmons said. "I feel like we should have played better. If we would have executed better, I think we would have had a better outcome."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Those headsets are controlled by the NFL not the Pats.
The same thing happened to the Pats headsets.

Fuckin crybabies got their ass kicked by the greatest QB of all time. And by playing man coverage on best tight end in the game.

My friend is a huge Steelers fan & was talking about that last night.......

Lmao@ All Michaels statements about people around the country wondering if Pitts kicker would make the extra point & how significant it was, haha!

Collinsworth told All not to get him in trouble with that kind of talk, lol!

Can't wait for the days where the commentators will openly talk about the point spread........

I prefer the old days of signals; not headsets.

Like in grade school and high school where a player runs in the play.

The maintence is controlled by the home team. Pats maintain them by listening to the visiting team play calls while the visiting team gets to listen to pats radio announcers violently masturbating over a Brady TD pass.

I'm sure there is a good explanation for all of this that it happens only in Gillette...

The Steelers think the Patriots cheated by tampering with headset communications on Thursday night at Gillette Stadium. But the headsets haven’t been perfect in Pittsburgh, either.
After the Steelers beat the Jets in the AFC Championship Game in January of 2011, the Jets said they were having problems communicating at Heinz Field. Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez said the problems were something he hadn’t previously encountered.
“It never really happened for that long of a time,” Sanchez said. “We had to use a walkie-talkie at one point and [offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer] was just yelling calls in at one point. It was just another challenge, and we almost overcame it.”
Sanchez said the headsets in Pittsburgh failed repeatedly.
“The problem was the headset kept going out multiple times during the game,” Sanchez said, “so I had to run over and get a couple calls, piece together some calls on the headset that came in broken up. It was one of those things we were fighting through. I was proud of our guys for trying to piece it together.”
So what’s the difference between that problem the Jets had in Pittsburgh, and the problem the Steelers had last night in New England? The biggest difference seems to be that the Jets didn’t accuse the Steelers of any wrongdoing, and Jets coach Rex Ryan said after the game that the communications issue wasn’t the reason the Jets lost the game. The Steelers haven’t been so accommodating toward the Patriots in the wake of last night’s loss.

As usual, Pat Patriot doesn't know what he's talking about.

This 2014 NFL.com article seems to dispute that the NFL provides clubs’ headsets to them on game day:
This year, Bose shipped about 50 headsets to each stadium, for use by coaches on the sideline and in the booth, medical and officiating personnel. Teams travel with their own headsets in a special case and many coaches, creatures of habit and superstition, have taken to labeling their headset, particularly if their teams win when they wear a specific one. [...] The NFL mandates that every coach have exactly the same headset, and that any modification be made available to all teams so that no competitive advantage can be gained.
In fact, the NFL’s own Gameday Policy Manual states:
Home clubs are responsible for the installation and maintenance of the coaching staff communications infrastructure.

This really should never happen besides maybe some type of event like a bad storm in the area.

A lot goes into these games and it's a multi-billion dollar business, this stuff is so bush league. Start fining teams 500k if the equipment goes down for first offense and we'll see how much it happens.

This league couldn't even keep the lights on at the Super Bowl.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. That was stated prominently in the deadspin article I linked. In fact the contradiction is the main reason I linked the article. I'm inclined to think that the NFL Gameday Policy Manual would generally be the law of the land, though, eh? Kind of funny that the NFL releases a statement that goes against their own manual. Shows you what a joke this league is.

It's likely not a headset issue but an ongoing maintenance issue.

And they are clearly not doing a good job of it considering Brady couldn't get his working either.
There were times during that game he was looking over to the sideline with a WTF look and his arms in the air like I'm not hearing anything.

Both teams had problems. Needs to be fixed. Belichick is like this happens EVERY week.
