Selected notes for Sunday: Strikeouts, strikeouts, strikeouts! That's what we have on Sunday, with Javier Vazquez facing the Mets, Justin Verlander against the free-swinging Yankees and Jon Lester who has already defeated the Blue Jays twice in 2009. … Roy Halladay has been shaky and perhaps even distracted by trade talk, going 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in his past three, but we expect him to rebound in what could well be an audition for his "new teammates." … Matt Cain doesn't usually bring his A-game to Pittsburgh, with an 0-2 record and 5.63 ERA against the Pirates, but remember, they are still the Pirates. Zach Duke is 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA against the Giants the past three times they've met. … Joel Pineiro (2.38) and Jason Marquis (1.17) both have solid ERAs in their past three games before the break, and we expect them both to come out with guns a-blazing. Yovani Gallardo, on the other hand, was ice-cold entering mid-July, with an 0-3 record and a 5.29 ERA in his past three. We're hoping for a second-half turnaround starting Sunday. … Will the real Johnny Cueto please stand up? Maybe a few extra days off will yield numbers more in line with what he was doing before his past two disastrous performances. … Matt Garza has never beaten the Royals (0-4, 4.02 ERA) but he is going up against Luke Hochevar, whose recent run of success we think is more mirage than truth. … J.A. Happ is certainly worth starting until he loses, but keep in mind he does have a 9.82 ERA against Florida, though all of that came in relief appearances. … Brett Anderson is 2-0 with an 0.49 ERA in his past three, and the Angels in the outfield aren't exactly the regulars, so we'll take a chance on putting him ahead of Erik Bedard, who is 2-0 versus the Indians with a 3.51 ERA. … Francisco Liriano and Jose Contreras -- aka "this year's Francisco Liriano" -- are both iffy options at best at this stage of the game. … Both Los Angeles pitchers (John Lackey and Hiroki Kuroda) also have far too many questions than answers attached to them as we enter the second half of the season. We'll pass on both this turn and re-evaluate next time out. … As for the rest, Fernando Nieve has gone 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA after starting the year 3-0, Aaron Laffey has a 7.88 in his past three starts, and as for Yusmeiro Petit, well, his stat line speaks for itself, doesn't it?

Now batting (Sunday)

Hitters' count
• Aramis Ramirez, 3B, Cubs: Ramirez is hitting .343 with seven homers and 22 RBIs against the Nationals in the past three seasons. That's good enough for us.
• Ichiro Suzuki, OF, Mariners: He has a 12-game hitting streak going and has a .444 average against Aaron Laffey.
• Nick Markakis, OF, Orioles: Markakis is 8-for-16 against White Sox starter Jose Contreras. Not too shabby.
• Jacoby Ellsbury, OF, Red Sox: He won't make Halladay feel good about Boston. Ellsbury is a .353 hitter against Doc, including two home runs. That's a lot of pop …
• David Ortiz, DH, Red Sox: … but not as much as Big Papi, who has five home runs and 22 RBIs in his career against the "on the trade block" Halladay.
• Marco Scutaro, SS, Blue Jays: He's reached base safely in 11 straight games, and he has a .412 OBP against Jon Lester.
• Derek Jeter, SS, Yankees: Jeter has been hot, with hits in 17 of his past 18 games, and he's a .364 hitter against Justin Verlander.
• Chris Young, OF, Diamondbacks: His .185 average in July is pretty much what he's done all season, but it's a new "half." He sports a .429 average against Joel Pineiro. Follow Young to freedom!!!
Pitchers' count:
• Grady Sizemore, OF, Indians: Yes, he's making huge strides, with a 1.014 OPS in July, but hits a bump in the road against Erik Bedard. Sizemore is 0-for-12 against Bedard.
• Ryan Braun, OF, Brewers: Assuming Johnny Cueto will be back at full strength, we'll bench Braun and his .182 mark against the Reds starter.
• Joey Votto, OF, Reds: Smoking hot in July with a .354 average, but we give the edge to Yovani Gallardo today, who gets Votto out at an 83 percent clip.
• Jason Bartlett, SS, Rays: He's slipping, with only a .219 average in July, and he hit only .214 against the Royals last season.
• Jimmy Rollins, SS, Phillies: Rollins hasn't figured out Andrew Miller yet, having been retired in 14 of 15 at-bats against the Marlins pitcher.
• Nate McLouth, OF, Braves: McLouth has a mere .214 OBP against the Mets this season, having already played them five times while with the Pirates.
• Kevin Kouzmanoff, 3B, Padres: The Kouz has only a single in his career exploits against the Rockies' Jason Marquis.
If you're hardcore

• Edwin Encarnacion, 3B, Reds: He went 3-for-3 in the first game of the "second half" with a home run and two career round-trippers off of Yo-Ga.
• Austin Kearns, OF, Nationals: He does have five home runs and 14 RBIs against the Cubs since 2006. Who knows?
• Gabe Gross, OF, Rays: He's a .308 hitter against the current Royals staff and has had four starts already this month.
• Mike Napoli, C, Angels: Napoli is hitting .333 in July and is a perfect 3-for-3 off Brett Anderson.
• Daniel Murphy, 1B, Mets: He's hitting .318 since July 8, and at least he's driving in some runs for the Mets -- three in his past two starts .
• Jeremy Hermida, OF, Marlins: What's happening? Hermida is 3-for-4 with three RBIs facing J.A. Happ. That's what's happening.
• Rich Aurilia, 1B, Giants: The epitome of a hardcore play, Aurilia is 8-for-13 (.615) against Zach Duke. Now do you trust Bruce Bochy enough to put him in the lineup Sunday?
Triage

Injury list: Out
• Cory Wade, P, Dodgers (15-day disabled list, shoulder)
Injury list: Day-to-day
• Lance Berkman, 1B, Astros (calf): After a few days off, Berkman strained his calf running out a ground ball in the eighth inning Thursday. Chalk it up to rust.
• Grant Balfour, P, Rays (bereavement list): Balfour flew to Australia for his grandfather's funeral, but the fatigue of a long flight back might keep him unavailable for a day or two.
• Evan Longoria, 3B, Rays (infected finger): He passed on the All-Star Game and will likely return to the lineup this weekend, but the team would like to see how he feels swinging the bat before making a decision.
• Chris Dickerson, OF, Reds (back): He was supposed to play right field in the wake of Jay Bruce's injury, but back spasms made him a late scratch Thursday.

Lester threw eight shutout innings and picked up the win in Boston's victory over Kansas City on Friday.

Lester allowed four hits and two walks while striking out eight. He and Josh Beckett are rounding into form as the All-Star break approaches, giving the Red Sox two aces at the head of the rotation. Lester is 5-1 with a 1.48 ERA and 69 strikeouts in his last 54 innings.

Halladay has a 10-3 record, 2.85 ERA and otherworldly 106:17 K:BB ratio.

Jackson held the Indians to one run and four hits in seven strong innings Friday night. He struck out four and walked two.

Jackson trimmed his stellar ERA to 2.52 and did a better job of limiting the free passes after issuing four or more walks in three of his previous five starts. "He was tremendous," manager Jim Leyland told the Associated Press.

Chamberlain lasted just 4.1 innings Friday night against the Angels, allowing four earned runs on nine hits.

Chamberlain was spotted a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but couldn't hold on, and a high pitch count once again forced him out prematurely. He has been unable to pitch at least six innings in three consecutive starts

Liriano gave up six runs (three earned) over 5.1 innings with five strikeouts and two walks in Thursday's loss to the Yankees. His record fell to 4-9.

Liriano labored through his outing by allowing nine baserunners. An error on a potential double play limited the damage to three earned runs . Liriano remains an enigma after the first half since he's healthy and at times can resemble his top 2008 form, but he always seems to fall apart with runners on base.

Holland will rejoin the rotation to begin the second half and will start on Sunday, the Dallas Morning News reports.

Holland will oppose Francisco Liriano in Sunday's contest, with Tommy Hunter sliding back to Tuesday and Dustin Nippert headed to the bullpen. Holland will get at least three starts before a possible Matt Harrison return, at which point a decision will be made on Holland's immediate role with Texas.

Cain (elbow) is on track to make his scheduled start Sunday after throwing a bullpen session Friday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Cain left his last start before the break early after being hit with a line drive, and was unavailable for the NL in the All-Star Game. He looks good to go for the second half though.

Duke was added to the NL All-Star roster as an injury replacement for Matt Cain on Sunday.

Duke has already won as many games (eight) as he did in 2007 and 2008, combined. His earned run average of 3.29 and WHIP of 1.21 are incredible considering how poorly he performed the last couple years.

Phillies-Marlins Preview
By ALAN FERGUSON,
STATS Writer
(AP) -- Thanks to Mother Nature, the Philadelphia Phillies get another crack at their longest winning streak in more than three years.
The Phillies seek their eighth straight victory as they meet the Florida Marlins on Sunday in the finale of a rain-shortened four-game series.
Philadelphia trailed 2-0 in the second inning Saturday night before a 90-minute rain delay that led to the eventual postponement. No make-up date has been announced, but the Phillies will visit the Marlins for the final time this season in late September.
Philadelphia (50-38) has won seven straight in Florida. It hasn't taken eight in a row overall since a nine-game run from April 30-May 9, 2006.
To extend those streaks, the NL East leaders will look to help keep J.A. Happ's unbeaten one going.
Happ (6-0, 2.90 ERA) earned his seventh straight winning decision by allowing one run and four hits over seven innings in a 5-2 victory over visiting Pittsburgh last Sunday.
The left-hander is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his last four outings, and 4-0 with a 3.03 ERA in 10 starts since moving into the rotation on May 23.
"What more can you ask for?" Philadelphia pitching coach Rich Dubee told his team's official Web site. "He's getting us deep into games. He doesn't rattle."
Happ has never started against the Marlins, but has no record and 9.82 ERA in three career relief appearances against them.
He'll try to benefit from a lineup that's outscored opponents 76-32 over the last 12 contests and beaten Florida by a combined 10-5 in the series' first two games.
To avoid losing three straight for only the second time since May 23, the Marlins (46-46) will turn to inconsistent Andrew Miller (3-4, 4.50).
After earning a win July 4 against the Pirates, the left-hander had his shortest outing of the season, lasting only 2 2-3 innings in the Marlins' historic 14-7 comeback victory over Arizona. Miller allowed six runs but only two were earned.
Florida crawled out of the early hole with a franchise-record 10 runs in the eighth inning.
"Obviously my last start wasn't very good," Miller told the team's official Web site. "There's still plenty of room to improve and plenty to take from the last game and learn from."
Miller dropped to 0-2 in four career starts against the Phillies on May 26 by allowing four runs over six innings of a 5-3 road defeat.
"We know they have great hitters up and down the lineup," Miller said. "It's not going to be easy, but you go out and battle with each hitter, and hopefully, the outcome is in your favor."
Miller gave up one run over seven innings but did not factor in his only home start versus Philadelphia on June 11, 2008.

Giants-Pirates Preview

By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN,
STATS Senior Writer

(AP) -- Earlier this week, Pittsburgh Pirates starter Zach Duke replaced an injured San Francisco Giants' Matt Cain on the NL All-Star team. On Sunday, they'll get a chance to oppose each other for the first time in over three years.

Duke will try to add to the Giants' woes in this series as the Pirates look to complete their second three-game home sweep of San Francisco in as many years.

Pittsburgh (40-50) had Duke (8-8, 3.29 ERA) named to the All-Star team for the first time this week when Cain (10-2, 2.38) was removed from the active roster after he was hit in his pitching arm by a line drive off the bat of San Diego's Tim Stauffer on July 10. A Giants spokesman said X-rays of Cain's pitching arm showed no significant damage and the injury was diagnosed as a bruise.

Cain will be making the start Sunday.

"I should be fine," Cain told the Giants' official Web site. "I have swelling (in the arm), but nothing out of the ordinary."

The Giants (49-41) probably aren't excited about facing Duke after being stifled by Pirates starters in the first two games of this series. Paul Maholm allowed an unearned run in eight innings of a 2-1, 14-inning win Friday, and Charlie Morton worked seven innings Saturday in a 2-0 victory.

San Francisco has lost three straight overall, and five in a row at Pittsburgh. The Giants have 12 hits, four walks and 18 strikeouts in this series.

"It's been a rough start here, but it's two games. It is what it is," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We'll get in a rhythm."

Duke, who is 6-3 with a 2.77 ERA in nine home starts, could pose another challenge for the Giants. He posted a 1.65 ERA in winning two starts against San Francisco last year.

The left-hander, though, is 0-3 with a 4.29 ERA in his last three starts. The Pirates have scored a total of six runs in those games.

Cain, meanwhile, is 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA in four career starts against Pittsburgh. He has been unable to slow down Pirates All-Star second baseman Freddy Sanchez, who is 7 for 13 versus him.

The right-hander won six straight starts from May 17-June 14, and is 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA in his last five outings.

The only previous time Cain and Duke met was on June 8, 2006, when the Giants won 5-4. Neither starter got a decision and both allowed three runs - Cain in four innings and Duke over six-plus.

San Francisco was able to keep Pittsburgh rookie Garrett Jones in the ballpark Saturday. Jones had a double in four at-bats after homering in his four previous games, going deep twice Friday.

"We're pitching well," Bochy said. "You can say the same thing for the other club... But they're getting enough runs to beat us."

Pittsburgh has won just three of its last 10 games, scoring 25 runs in the process.

"We need to obviously swing the bats better and score some more runs so our guys don't have to throw shutouts," Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson said.

Scouting Report:
Diamondbacks: Petit is hoping the second half of the season starts a lot better than the way the first half ended for him. In the rotation because of the injury to Brandon Webb, the right-hander appeared on his way to his first victory of the season in his last start before the Marlins rallied for 10 runs in one inning to cruise to a 14-7 win at Chase Field. Petit had taken a shutout into the sixth before allowing a two-run home run to Jorge Cantu on an 0-2 pitch and a solo shot by Jeremy Hermida that ended his night.Cardinals: Pineiro had about the quietest excellent first half of anyone in baseball. Because he was unjustly saddled with nine losses, the quality of Pineiro's pitching was obscured. He has been very, very good this year. And he's been even better at home. In seven starts at Busch Stadium, Pineiro has averaged just over seven innings per start, he sports a 2.55 ERA and he's allowed exactly one home run. Overall, Pineiro has allowed one walk in his last five starts and one homer in his last 12.

Astros-Dodgers Preview
By ALAN FERGUSON,

After posting a 1.56 ERA in seven consecutive relief appearances, Ortiz (3-4, 4.44 ERA) returned to the starting rotation June 11 by allowing three hits over 5 1-3 scoreless innings in a 2-1 win in 13 innings over the visiting Chicago Cubs.
Since then, however, the Encino, Calif., native is 0-2 with a 5.90 ERA over his last five starts, and opponents are hitting .297 against him in that span.
Ortiz, who hasn't won since June 2, was pulled after giving up four runs in three innings July 9 against Washington before the Astros rallied for a 9-4 home victory.
After the game, he went on a seven-minute tirade to express frustration with how he's been handled.
"It became apparent to me from the very beginning of the season that I wasn't going to be given much of a chance or room for error and today is another example of that," he said. "The last two months, I don't think I've really struggled pitching. I struggled today and I'm out after three innings and we come back and win. I don't understand it, and I haven't been given a real good reason why I was taken (out)."
He improved to 9-9 lifetime against the Dodgers by defeating them April 21 after giving up three runs in five innings. At Dodger Stadium, Ortiz is 6-3 with a 4.52 ERA.
After suffering only its third loss in 11 games, Houston (46-45) will try to solve Los Angeles right-hander Hiroki Kuroda (3-5, 4.67), who is 1-0 with a 0.66 ERA in two career starts against the Astros.
Kuroda, however, has allowed at least four earned runs in four of his last six appearances and hasn't pitched more than six innings in his last two starts.
He gave up three runs in 1 1-3 innings of relief in Sunday 7-4 win at Milwaukee, and in his previous start July 8 against the host New York Mets, Kuroda allowed five runs and eight hits over 4 1-3 innings in a 5-4 defeat.
"I have to start fresh and really have to do more work and have a better outing the next time," Kuroda told the Dodgers' official Web site following that loss in New York. "I have a lot to work on."

Mariners-Indians Preview
By ALAN FERGUSON,
STATS Writer

Seattle took three of four from Texas before the All-Star break. To earn their sixth win in eight games, the Mariners (48-43) will look to Erik Bedard (5-2, 2.63 ERA), who will make his third start since returning from left shoulder inflammation earlier this month.
In coming back from his third trip to the DL in two seasons with Seattle, the left-hander pitched four innings July 7 against Baltimore and 5 2-3 innings Sunday versus Texas. He didn't get a decision in either start but extended his streak of allowing two runs or fewer to eight straight games.
While looking to improve to 4-0 on the road and in day games this season, Bedard will also try to move to 3-0 against the Indians in eight career starts. He hasn't faced Cleveland since May 4, 2007, when he was in his final season with the Orioles.
Bedard faces an Indians team that's lost 20 of 27. Cleveland also has been outscored 29-14 while going 2-4 in its last six.
Aaron Laffey (3-2, 4.24) will look to avoid three consecutive defeats for the first time in his career. After suffering a loss in relief on May 22, Laffey spent more than six weeks on the disabled list with a right oblique strain.
In his return July 8 against the Chicago White Sox, the left-hander allowed four runs and seven hits over six innings in a 5-1 defeat.
"It felt good to be back out there and be back in that competitive atmosphere," Laffey said.
Laffey is 0-1 with a 4.60 ERA in three career starts versus Seattle. He was tagged for eight runs - three earned - over 3 2-3 innings in an 8-2 road defeat on July 18, 2008.
