Bannister roughed up by Athletics: Royals SP Brian Bannister had a rough go of it on Friday in a 9-4 loss to the Athletics. He lasted only four innings, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits. He struck out one and walked three as his ERA climbed up to 3.97 with the performance.

Bannister had a great start in his previous outing at Tampa Bay, going seven shutout innings for a 4-1 win. He has been pretty good on the hill for the Royals but his 7-8 record doesn't necessarily reflect that. His next start is slated for Thursday at Minnesota.

Liriano to remain in rotation for now: The Sports Xchange reports that Francisco Liriano will remain in the starting rotation for now. Manager Ron Gardenhire announced the decision Sunday. Liriano, who left the team Thursday to return to Minnesota to deal with a family issue, was in jeopardy of losing his spot, but Gardenhire said he will start either August 12 or 13. RHP Anthony Swarzak or LHP Brian Duensing will start the other day.

Liriano is said to be in danger of losing his rotation spot after the team added Carl Pavano this past week. His numbers have warranted the speculation, but for now he remains in the rotation.

Phils activate Pedro for debut: The Phillies activated Pedro Martinez (shoulder) from the 15-day DL for his start Wednesday and sent long reliever Kyle Kendrick back to the minor leagues.

Martinez could be a two-start pitcher for Fantasy Week 20 (Aug. 17-23). With the Phillies, he could be made a winner even if he gives up three runs in five innings in his starts. take a flier now, just in case.

Samardzija will make a spot start Wednesday against Philadelphia, the Chicago Tribune reports.
This will be his first career major league start after throwing exclusively from the bullpen this season and last. He started 12 games for Triple-A Iowa this year and threw a complete game. Wednesday's start will be in place of the injured Carlos Zambrano, and Samardzija's tenure in the rotation may only last one start.

Kevin Correia allowed three earned runs on two hits over 6 1/3 innings, walking three and striking out three in a loss to the Brewers Sunday.
That’s back-to-back quality starts for Correia following a disaster outing in Philadelphia on July 23 in which he gave up eight earned runs in just 3 1/3 innings. Unfortunately, the light-hitting San Diego lineup was only able to provide one run of support in this one, dropping Correia's record to 7-9. While the Padres righty has shown flashes of dominance this season, most notably a 3.08 ERA in June, he still holds a mediocre 4.73 ERA for the year and should be viewed mainly as an NL-only option or decent mixed-league spot starter in home matchups. His next start is set for August 7 at home vs. the Mets, favorable circumstances for the inconsistent righty.

Villanueva yields two HRs in loss: Brewers SP Carlos Villanueva allowed a pair of solo homers and gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings during Friday's 6-3 loss to the Astros. Villanueva was charged with six hits and one walk while striking out two. He held a 2-1 lead before Jason Michaels and Miguel Tejada homered in the fifth to put Houston ahead for good.

Villanueva has allowed four or more runs in two of his three starts since entering the rotation July 28 and has yet to go five innings in a start. He did pitch five scoreless innings in his previous start against the Padres, so it hasn't been all bad for Villanueva since converting to a starter. His next scheduled start is for Wednesday against the Padres.

Bailey allows five earned runs in ND: Cincinnati SP Homer Bailey allowed five earned runs for the second straight game on Wednesday in a no decision against the Giants. He allowed the five earned runs on nine hits, striking out two and allowing a walk.

Bailey has not been very good in his last two outings and this season has been a similar story. He has a 7.11 ERA and 2-3 record in nine starts in 2009. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday at St. Louis.

Carpenter goes eight innings for win: Ryan Ludwick's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning scored the go-ahead run and the Cardinals withstood a shaky beginning by Chris Carpenter to beat Pittsburgh 6-4 on Friday night, stretching the Pirates' losing streak to six games. Carpenter (11-3) fell behind 4-2 in the third - as many runs as he allowed in his previous four starts combined - before finishing with five shutout innings to improve to 6-0 in his last seven starts. Carpenter gave up nine hits in eight innings, the fourth consecutive start in which he has given up eight or more, before Ryan Franklin finished up for his 25th save in 27 opportunities. Carpenter struck out four and walked only one.

Carpenter not only was 5-0 with a 1.60 ERA in previous last six starts, he had an 0.73 ERA in his last five starts against Pittsburgh. His ERA on the season jumped up to 2.26 with the performance and his record improved to 11-3. He is a must-start Fantasy SP who is having a monster season. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday against the Reds.

Kevin Hart had a solid Pirates debut Thursday, allowing three earned runs on nine hits and one walk over six innings of five-strikeout ball vs. Arizona en route to the no-decision.
That's three straight quality starts for Hart, who was acquired from Cubs before the July 31 Trade Deadline. The Pirates reportedly insisted that Hart be included in the deal, so look for him to get a long look in the rotation. That said, poor command (18/19 K/BB) could catch up with him down the stretch, likely adding another run or so to his 2.94 ERA.

Jimenez goes six-plus for win: Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez (9-9) allowed two runs - one earned - and four hits in 6 2/3 innings for his third consecutive victory on Friday 6-2 over the Cubs. He struck out six and walked five, lowering his ERA to 3.65 on the season.

Jimenez was a bit wild on Friday against the Cubs but it worked for him as he allowed only one earned run. He has gone at least six innings in each of his starts since April and has become a solid Fantasy SP in mixed leagues. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday against the Pirates.

Buehrle 0-3 after perfect game: White Sox starter Mark Buehrle (11-6) continued to struggle after his perfect game against the Rays on July

Mark Buerhle wasn’t too sharp in a loss to the Indians Friday, giving up 11 hits and six runs (five earned) with two walks and two Ks over 7 2/3 innings to fall to 11-6.
Buehrle’s struggles since his perfect game continued in this one, as he was touched for a pair of blasts and lost his third straight start. He’s been knocked around for 17 earned runs over 18 1/3 innings in that span to send his ERA up to a season-high 3.89. One of his main issues during the rough stretch has been an inability to get swings and misses, as he’s fanned just five batters against four walks. Owners may want to consider giving him a seat when he toes the rubber again on Aug. 12 in Seattle.

Felix Hernandez was his own worst enemy in a no-decision vs. the Rays Friday, walking six and surrendering five hits and five runs (three earned) with seven Ks over six frames.
Hernandez had his usual plus stuff in this one, as evidenced by the scant amount of hits he allowed and seven Ks he rang up. Moreover, he threw a respectable 70 of 113 pitches for strikes, meaning the few batters he fell behind, he ended up walking. The walks have been an issue for King Felix recently, as he’s piled up 10 in his last two starts after totaling seven in his previous five. Overall, he’s fanned 148 batters against 49 walks with a stellar 2.84 ERA. He’s set to take his next turn in the rotation on Aug. 12 vs. the White Sox.

Scouting Report:
White Sox: Since tossing the 18th perfect game in Major League history on July 23, Buehrle has gone 0-3 with an 8.35 ERA. He also lost back-to-back home starts for the first time since Sept. 7-18, 2006. On Friday night against the Indians, Buehrle was far from sharp. He allowed a runner to reach base in every inning, surrendering six runs on 11 hits in 7 2/3 innings of work. By allowing so many balls in play, Buehrle also became the first Major League pitcher to induce six double-play grounders since Kansas City's Dick Drago on May 6, 1972. Lifetime against the Mariners, Buehrle is 7-4 with a 4.02 ERA in 14 games (13 starts).Mariners: He got bailed out by some late-game heroics, but Hernandez wasn't sharp in his last outing against the Rays. He walked six batters in six innings, gave up five runs on five hits and fell behind batters more than normal. The M's defense didn't help, though, as some passed balls and an error may have run up Hernandez's pitch count a little more than it should have. The right-hander was dominant in his only start against the White Sox this season, striking out nine and holding Chicago scoreless on four hits in eight innings.
