For those who are interested, the field of 16 has been set for this season's Stardust Invitational at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas. It's a head-to-head format (each handicapper picks 7 sides or totals and goes against their opponent only...winner moves on...tiebreaker is their best bets) that lasts 15 weeks...the show can be heard live on Friday nights in the West on KDWN AM-720.

The only announced matchup is the first week, Sept. 12, between defending champion "Papa" Joe Chevalier and Dave Malinsky.

The other 14:

Lem Banker
Dave Cokin
Jimmy Vaccaro
Ken White
Andy Iskoe
Bob Donahue
Ron Frazier
Ted Svransky
Bryan Leonard
Kevin O'Neill
Fezzik
Lee Sterling
David Stratton
Chuck Esposito

Anyone care to set a line? Papa Joe and Ken White are both two-time champs. Cokin has also won it.

They've been trying to get Lem Banker for years, so that is a coup.

mcfinex: In past years, "winkyduck" or myself have posted the contestant's plays each Friday night (after 10 p.m. Pacific time). There's sure to be a thread or two a week here for you to follow it.

Also, check back to this thread after Sept. 14 and I'll list the sites that also post the plays (I have a few on bookmark from last year, but you know how sports betting websites come and go).

Good field and anything can happen in a weekly elimination format, but long haul Billy Baxter would tear 'em all to shreds, so would Billy Golf Course

I'm looking forward to hearing Banker. He is a legend and want to hear his reasoning when he picks out his games. As for a favorite in the contest, I'm going with Iskoe. He has been so good over the last two years but who knows with this tough of a field. I've never seen this many good handicappers in the contest. They usually have three to four goofs like Rudy or Takanian and Wayne Root the master of knowing only how to get suckers to sign up with his service or provide backing with his bull*hit stock that's woth pennies and will be delisted by the spring. Are there odds on this contest? If so the longshot play might be Sterling. I've heard him on Fox radio and know he understands football betting as well as anyone. Anyone else have a longshot in the field as well as a favorite?

My congrats to the Stardust on an excellent field. I count 13 solid handicappers. That's far, far more than in past years.
Perhaps the Stardust learned a lesson last year after witnessing Wayne Root's performance. There's a big difference between a true handicapper and a salesman.
Those who have never heard Dave Malinsky talk are in for a treat. Several of these contestants aren't just smart but brilliant people.

Doughnut,

Fezzik is probably one of the more handsome guys in the contest.

Where's Papa Joe this year? Don't past champs get invited back or did he just decide not to come?
