I usually leave a good tip regardless of how bad the service was, but a much better one for those who actually deserve it.

But some ppl just aren't cut out for waiting tables and it can be very annoying having to deal with those types...

15% if poor service
20 - 25% usually
>25% if they gave lots of good recs, had to work especially hard, happy hour, etc

i waited tables for like 9 months when I missed a semester of college due to medical issues, not an easy job for the money

Tipping in a normal situation everyone is within the realm of reason.

My question is, what do you do if it's a special night and you have a bunch of drinks. Picture you're at a steakhouse. You and the lady order a couple of martinis before the meal, then a decent bottle of red wine with your meal, chat a while, order an after dinner drink to finish the night up. Now the food bill might be $120, but the drinks are another $200. Do you tip 20% on the whole $320? Dropping $64 seems excessive when the waiter did basically the same amount of work as if you didn't drink any and only had to tip $24. You give the extra $40?

Most restaurants I go to automatically charge 18% for parties of eight or more. Even though it's usually just my girlfriend and I, I figure if it's good enough for the restaurant then it's good enough for me. Paying more than you need to is foolish; if a server gets offended at 18% they can find another job.

Ding Ding well said.

And all you BIG timers giving more than 18% is insanely crazy. A waitress or waiter is no different than any one else in this world they chose the job they have but that doesn't mean they deserve being compensated because they have to go back and forth 10-15 times while waiting your table.

It's called a job and they're the one that chose that job.

You need to be dropping the $64 on a cab. You'd be plowed

automatic 18 % is fine on a large party. These types tend to linger longer than normal and stay to chit-chat about whyever they are there....reunion or whatever and drinking coffee for an hour is not good for tips.

I have no problem with the automatic tip on large parties, Canadians, other Foreigners, Negroes, etc.

The tip should be be in large part up to the diner/patron so as exceptional service can be rewarded and poor service punished.

I can see tipping 30-50% on a small Breakfast bill, but rarely over 25% for dinner....unless there is a happy ending forthcoming !

Seriously a $50 dinner check and a $10 tip is not cheap, $9 is fine, $7 is ....well substandard. If I had that table , I'd be a bit puzzled....I got tipped, but a bit short....they must have liked everything OK enough....where is the other $2 ? I have to toke out the busboy and kitchen as a waiter, that $2 would go that way.

As I have aged I am able to be more generous-especially to students that are going to school while still working. These kids that I know expect little- but the genuine kindness and the way they treat me does not go without notice. As far as bad service or a bad meal-still a tip - but will not return. Geez guys- I go to a nursing facility often to visit- 3 times a week I see young people entertaining the patients- that is when I really stand up and take names. gl all.

it is just the facts man !

You will get poor tips from

young people ( teens)

Blacks

Canadians and other foreigners that aren't familiar with the USA style of tipping

ask anybody that tends bar/ waits tables etc.....they will tell you blacks don't tip well

call me racist all you want, but it is factual information. Any place that is highly black is a shithole !

I agree. Brothers don't know how to tip! They don't have the cash or just don't get it. It's widespread.
They always ordered the fruity-ass drinks as well. The ones bartenders hate. The ones that took 5x as long to make as others.

Waited tables through college.
