I notice that someone mentioned that squares bet over and sharpies bet under. ANybody notice that yanks and sox are 10 over balt is 15 over and clevland is 8 over.I dont do n.l.Sometimes I think people forget the name of the game is winning and not worrying about what you called square or sharp. value is only about winning.

Bob - I think the favorite and over reference has become a cliche. A lot of square or inexperienced football betors have been known to play a fav. and over parlay on big games like Monday Night Football. For almost all experienced baseball bettors over/under numbers are looked at equally when handicapped, and like you say value is what leads to winning.

I think that with so many games on the board these days in different sports, the whole "squares bet the over" thing really only happens with highly televised football and basketball games. Baseball totals are designed to beat sharper players. Even the biggest of baseball games each night do not get anywhere near the handle of football and basketball. So even if a few squares bet the over, there's no sense adjusting for that ahead of time. But in a big Monday Night Football game, etc. that is another story.

I think there are psychological reasons that squares typically bet the Over (if that stereotype is actually true).

Squares tend to be risk-averse. When they bet, they're trying not to lose (instead of trying to win).

Sharps don't care about risk, they're simply looking for the best value. Sharps are trying to win.

When you bet the Over, you can win your bet in the 3rd quarter, 6th inning, etc. Squares are drawn towards that sense of security. Once the game goes Over, you can sit back and count your money!

But when you bet the Under, your money is always @ risk. You could have 14 points in the final minute of a basketball/football game, you could have 5 runs in the 9th inning, etc.

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

Real squares find it very hard to play dogs and unders and have no idea of value. I hear so often during football, "I just can't bet an under and root for a boring game" from friends who have no hope of ever winning and do not take the time to try and figure out how. In NBA I have a buddy who would rather play .20 NBA totals with a local rather than open an account offshore. Will he ever win like this? NO!
