Some time ago, I installed this program to see if my computer had any spyware on it. I have never completely understood it. Last night I ran the program again and it found 71 problems. There is a key you can hit to "fix selected problems". I did that but there were only 4 problems removed. I ran it again and there were 67 problems found, but I was afraid to put a check mark in the box for each one. They were all "Back-web lite" and listed as registry. When you click to read about each one individually, it tells you what they do--but I don't understand if they are "problems". Anyone know about this or backweb lite? Thanks .
Dante, I have spybot and pestpatrol but I am in agreement with old in that it just isn't clear what the hell I'm doing. Pestpatrol is more intuitive but when I ran spybot, it found more spyware that pestpatrol did not. Maybe all I need to do is read the manual (which I didn't since it's too damn long - just give me what I need to know!!) There's also ad-adware but I have tried that one.

In addition to finding serious spyware programs, Spybot will also show you ALL the tracking programs ((like Internet Explorer's website history))that keep track of all the websites you have visited and all the recent documents like all the PHOTO's you may have viewed in a photo viewing program or all the Word documents you have viewed etc.
If someone gets access to your computer via a Spyware reporting program they will have a REPORT of all the websites and Documents/Photos you have visited or viewed
I recommend ERASING all histories of your website surfing and recent documents unless you need to refer to them for work then you may want those histories for convenience.
If you CLICK on each entry Spybot will give you an explanation of what the program is called and used for. well about 90% of them.

If you use a program like "Bonzi Buddy" or "Gator" that tracks your internet surfing that will show up as well...Microsoft's Media Player has Spyware built into it and keeps track of ALL the songs you play as well as photos/videos played and then periodically sends them to Microsoft. Personally I do NOT like that and Microsoft can shove their media player and it's Secret reporting up their ass. Most people DO NOT KNOW that media player INVADES their PRIVACY and helps build a MARKETING LIST for Microsoft that Microsoft sells and you get NOTHING.
So it other words the WORSE thing that can happen when you remove all the spyware is you will loose the HISTORY of webpages in IE or other browsers.

I bought the Mcafee Virus Scan and Spam stopper package some time recently. It came with a "firewall" and I had a MAJOR problem. Had to dusable the firewall and still do not understand how to use that ! But the Spam Killer and Virus Home edition seem good. (But I try to be carefull about this stuff0 Thanks again!

old, I got a virus (of the computer kind) a couple months back and I went nuts with the security/antivirus/antispam software. I had 2 antivirus scanners and a firewall installed but all this really slowed things down and caused a lot of freezing with all the interaction so now I have slimmed it down (all freeware of course):
1. AVG antivirus and email
2. pestpatrol and spybot (I swear I'll learn all of the intricacies of it)
3. mailwasher
4. popup stopper - this is a great program if you ever go to espn.com, home of the popup.

The Firewall (from Mcafee) would not let me even open my home page on Yahoo or do ANYTHING.
I could not get the proper help from their website--so it was suggested that I remove it. I did.
The SpamKiller-does not really stop spam-but kinda protects your computer from it, by "killing it".
Virus Scan--I thought was the same as a Firewall to show how uneducated that I am!

Spybot has a feature in which you can easily recover what ever you removed, just remove the checked items, then restart your computer, if you have any problems, spybot automatcly runs, then you goto the recovery and recover the items you removed and restart your computer.
I found that Adaware SUCKED soooooo bad! It was impossible to know what the hell to remove.
Also, if you try and remove a program such as Gator, it may be running in the backround and won't be removable until your computer is retarted, Spybot will inform you if this occurs and walk you right threw what to do, it's easy.
Also, as FatFrank mentioned, WindowWasher Windowwasher is a great program for cleaning your cache, windows history, cookies, tracks, etc, and it does this to as many programs as you have IE: Media Player, RealOnePlayer, etc...
Also, if you d/l alot of programs I suggest you scan disk and defrag twice a month, it keeps thing's running smoothly and increases your computer's memory.

Currently spreading is a new virus named Spybot. Except the same name, this virus has nothing to do with Spybot-S&D. The virus Spybot(see different names below) is basically a keylogger.

Symantec: W32.Spybot.Worm
Panda Software: W32/Spybot
Kaspersky: Worm.P2P.SpyBot.gen
This virus is NOT part of Spybot-S&D, nor is the Spybot-S&D infected with it. But I use this opportunity to remind everyone to keep their AV software up-to-date (I recommend downloading an update at least once a week).

InBox Inc. has registered the domain spybot.com and makes it look like people would have to register there to get a copy of Spybot-S&D. Spybot-S&D is free to use and doesn't need any registration, so please don't be fooled by spybot.com!
In addition, InBox Inc. has announced to get a trademark on the name Spybot, and threatens legal consequences, including the threat to stop us from using the name Spybot - Search & Destroy.
Until this situation has been settled, I asked you to boykott spybot.com and InBox Inc.!
Second, the domain safer-networking.com has been registered by a dialer company. As you may now, Safer Networkingis the name of another project of mine to offer Spybot-S&D downloads and mirror services. Please understand that safer-networking.com is a completely different thing!
