Champion Auto Racing Team (CART) will be test driving a new market, by featuring an online gaming company as the title sponsor of this weekend’s Grand Prix Americas.
The racing event in downtown Miami is ‘presented by’ London-based Sportsbook.com, which will also sponsor a Walker Racing entry, driven by Darren Manning in the Champ car series race.
This revolution is not agreed by everyone: Anti-gambling group argues that this violates the Wire Wager Act 1961, which prohibits the use of telephone wires for the purpose of gambling. It was a law that did not envision cyberspace. So companies like Sportsbook.com, have (so far) avoided prosecution by basing their entire operation outside America. In racing, bets can be placed on NASCAR, Champ Cars and Formula One.
People in the US can place bets through the internet or dial an 800 number that goes directly out of the country, by using a credit card, bank wire or Western Union transfer.
'There is no law on the book in the United States currently that states it's illegal to advertise a sports betting Internet company,'' said Gary Hoyle, Sportsbook.com's director of marketing for the Americas.
Obviously, Champ Car and CART have investigated this quite extensively. Walker Racing has investigated it as well.''
