Going into Tonite:

YTD 35-31-2 (Began Posting/Tracking NBA plays at RX just before the ALLSTAR break) Every play thusfar for 1 Unit. (1 Unit = 1% of bankroll).

well, folks, lets just say that SUnday March 14th was BLACK sunday for me....I lost an immense battle with the monster they call DISCIPLINE & the monster they call MONEY MANAGEMENT...WHy the FVCK is it so hard...what is wrong with me
icon_confused.gif

Let's just say that I did WAY worse than the -3% I lost here, Also lost my 2 NHL plays & a whole lot more of undiciplined action on 2nd halves etc...makes me sick...after 13 years I still lack the conviction to maintain solid DISCIPLINE each & every day, sometimes I will go 6 months without breaking my rules & then bang, have a crazy day...although I win them sometimes, they usually lose....

What's worse is now there is that overwhelming desire to bang a game hard to try to get back where I was...& we all know what that can lead too.....I am going to be very selective in all my plays going forward. sigh......

From now till the end of the season I will likely only post later in the day as I want to ensure that I am getting the best possible # on the games that I like.

Now if I feel strongly that the best # is to be had early then I will post early...But what I will try to do is play games that represent the best line value if I like the game.

My stomach is still in knots from yesterday & it is killing me.

SpoSav.....

Same here....been there done that......and did it again and again.

It is the time bomb many of us sit on when we play with this particular fire.

Too bad the only game in town to deal with this kind of thing is Gamblers Anonomous (been there done that too by the way...more than once). GA is stringent about total abstinence....and let's face it.....that isn't going to happen with most of us.

So that leaves us with setting up the rules that work for us...and the lines we can and cannot cross....and the devastating feelings we encounter when we break our own rules, win or lose....but especially after losing.

I want to thank you for your honest post. It has given me pause to consider my own steadfastness regardign following my own rules.

I suspect a lot of the posters and lurkers in this forum are sitting on the same powder keg. Any way in which we can help each other stick with our gameplan is great.

I can give a few of the rules I lay out for myself....:

1) Never *EVER* play in online casinos. Not even after a big win in sports wagering.

2) Make all of my full game plays before the first game starts. Don't double up on the late games after the early games are over.

3) Don't make any halftime wagers bigger than my biggest full game wager for that day. (that sounds like a big bet but I do very well on halftimes)

4) If I lose more than $xxxx in a month, quit playing for the rest of the month.

5) Don't play on credit.

It would seem to me that keeping those five simple rules would keep one in PLENTY of action....and in fact, if followed strictly, I doubt one could ever really get in unmanagable trouble from gambling.

I will also admit I have broken all five of those rules at some point in 2004......but not today (yeah yeah...I know....it's still early).

Anyway.....I will stop rambling about this now....and I realize I sound a bit G.A.-ish in this post, but I think control is a FAR bigger issue for most of us than handicapping, so I am hoping this thread (and my contribution to it) will be helpful.

been there and done that, i know exactly what your saying and ive been at it almost 18yrs now.. what i can offer you is this, do your capping everyday the same way for the same amount of time.. example, cap the games from 12 to 1 every day or however long it takes you.. Put your plays in, then walk away and personally i try not to watch the games that im down on.. I prefer to watch the other ones.. You must look at things on a monthly or bi-weekly basis, looking day to day will kill you.. You seem to be an everyday gambler, like myself, so you must realize that there will be more games tomorrow.. Sometimes, i will make a chart with plays from 1 to 120 listed and simply pull the chart out and plug in the games from day to day as they arise.. To be a success long term in this business, you must stay disciplined and focused.

the next time you get the urge...REMEBER...REMEBER...REMEBER how gut wrenching it was...place a value on your bankroll that is not monetary...something such as what would so-and-so think of this mistake...maybe someone you respect in the Forum..or a local friend you see and discuss sports with..tell yourself how smart you are for not making these mouse-clicking mistakes...finally...the next time you win...take some of that money and spend it on something you want...nice dinner...clothes...new golf clubs...whatever...just so you get the reward for your efforts...this places value..worth and self esteem where it needs to be so that IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN...til your next win...good luck and look forward to your selections...

What causes one to chase is at that singular moment in time, the desire and need for instant gratification makes one lose sight of the long term view of this as a business. On any particular day and often times at the end of a season, one will tend to feel a sense of urgency to try and win that particular day forgetting that it is but one day in a lifetime of days. Each and every day there is a new opportunity for value in this business or life itself. If you were to have chased and won yesterday, you would likely feel relieved and would tend to do it again in the future. By feeling the agony of losing, you learned the hard, but painful experience necessary to ultimately cease from the chase. It is not easy, but if you can try and remember that every play you make is a percentage of the bankroll that you place at risk and thereby place at risk the future earnings potential, you will most certainly realize that the one or two plays that you make while chasing are of little value to you in increasing your overall business value. For the future, it is important to remember what you are feeling today. It is easy to say do not chase so let me leave you with this thought. If you chase, you will not, and I repeat, you will not succeed in this business. If succeeding is important to you, then you already know what not to do. So don't do it. Remember, tomorrow will be a new day, God willing!

I knew that you were worried about me and by responding to this thread wanted to perhaps lay your concerns to rest as well as genuinely try to share my thoughts with you. It is my intention to help those that opening and honestly share and sometimes need support as well as those that have been there consistently for me as well, and you certainly are one of those people. Put yesterday behind you and do not look back, only forward. We cannot change yesterday, but we certainly have choices today and tomorrow. As we make good choices, yesterday will become a distant memory. Be well and take good care.
