Sports Wagering (Luck or Skill)

I'm having a little trouble understanding why poker is considered a game of skill but sports wagering is considered a game of luck. Maybe I misread the comments of a post, so just checking on the "prevailing" opinion.
Has Congress or any legislative body declared sports wagering more a matter of luck than skill? What about poker. I, for one don't especially care for poker; but understand the thinking of those that do.
But sports wagering, assuming one is not a compulsive gambler and researches the plays carefully---is very selective in those bets; is just as skillfull as any poker player--IMO.

Of course, my opinion is not an "official" one.

Sports wagering is no more a game of luck than poker is. In any short-term one can get lucky or unlucky at either, but for both in the long-term skill wil prevail. Anybody who thinks otherwise doesn't have a clue, which is something that often applies to legsilative bodies.

Sportsgambling is a skill, if you choose to make it one. Luck is always nice, but not a necessity in winning at advantage gambling.

imo, the skill part comes in:

1) getting the best line

2) getting the best price (reduced juice)

3) handicapping the game

in my case, i replace #3 with knowing who to fade.

Government will declare it what it wants because of course it is luck for a certain length of time. All games are driven by luck day to day, but luck starts to even out over time. It doesn't matter much in most states though, the whole luck versus skill gambling argument doesn't matter in most laws. Gambling is gambling, is there money and chance involved? The courts will probably call it plain and simply gambling.

SKILL is what BW, BB, Tiger, Cowboy, Aussies, Henry, Spiros, Lem, Herbie Hoops, Artie B, Jamie, Buddy, Lunatic, Doc M,etc..use to win with...

LUCK is what their followers call themselves if/when they are able to get the plays in time and get down at a decent number.

As mentioned above, of course it's a skill(one that requires nurturing even when born a bit of a natural and/or educated well), one that also requires a degree of luck(when wanting maximized results)..

Sportsbook limits in contrast to table games limits, aren't just in place to prevent fixes that are pounced upon, force sizable board action from bettors to earn, and/or in just thwarting the super-selective from picking their spots as to earn for the entire year on a few plays..

They are in place because unlike the dice tables and roulette wheel..they offer extreme high-probability/positive-expectation spots for those that have the skills, bankroll, and patience to punish egregious BM mistakes and/or takedown strong spot play moneyline winners(mostly MLB) that no spread is involved to.

Its all really simple. If you have to ask if sports wagering is luck or skill then its luck for you.

Now that's some deep insight and unfortunately tends to be true.

As for what Wild Bill says about the courts simply calling it gambling if there is money and chance involved, I think that's exactly right. Seems they could say the exact same thing about buying stocks---shares. That could be similiar to buying shares in WSEX interactives. ????????????

I think you need to have a bit of both luck and skill....For example in Poker you can be the BEST skilled player at the table but if you DO NOT get any good cards you WILL NOT win, you can only bluff so many times


Same goes for sports wagering, IMO You can be the best Capper on the forum and have the game capped right as far as trends and strengths but if the team FORGETS to show up you can't win... So you need LUCK and SKILL in sportswagering and poker in general

TOTALLY AGREE, but in the longrun(at LEAST 3 years), the skillful players in both sports and poker will end up with the majority of the cheese.

Luck will only carry you up so far if one is not skillful..........and vice versa.

General, in my best John McEnroe voice, I say "you cannot be serious!"

Pittsburgh Jack Franzi may live a blessed life, but he isn't where he is because of luck, and all of his disciples in Vaccaro and Manteris,etc..don't make the fat cheese for running casino's sportsbooks due to his teaching them..the art of being or beating the lucky.

Fezzik isn't making a living based on being lucky.
