Please help me understand sponges. No, I do not mean your deadbeat uncle or brother, but sponges as in cleaning your table, dishes, etc. It has been in my mind for years, why the hell do we use sponges?!

We clean something like a pan with a sponge, ring it out and then use again and again to clean other stuff. Isn't this one of the dirtiest things we could do?

I mean, you hear people talk and say things like "best time to learn a new language is when kids are little, cause they're like sponges"...meaning they retain EVERYTHING....I don't want EVERYTHING that was in that dirty pan to be there when I go to wash the next thing. Sure you throw 'em away after a number of uses, but isn't the damage done? I mean no one I know has died from using a sponge, but it just grosses me out.

Am I missing something, do I have it all wrong?

Do you use sponges? If not, what do you use instead?

I use them and always wash them with soap before and after using. Plus I go through them quickly. I'm weird about dishes too, I actually wash them twice, once by hand and then again in the dishwasher.

They say your sink and sponge is the dirtiest thing in the house cause bacteria love moisture and food particles. Always wash out a sponge after doing dishes and change often. I like the O-Cello ones myself.

I use a brush with like a 10" handle for dishes. It is washed after every use with dawn and then sits on the top rack of the dishwasher each wash. I also keep SOS pads when needs something stronger and those are washed with dawn after each use and then also sit on the top rack of dishwasher each run.

I I also hand wash dishes then set them in the dishwasher. Just weird like that I guess.

I think sponges were originally used because they were found in the ocean, they are an animal. Now of course though they are synthetic.

The secret to having bacteria free sponges is to let them dry out. No moisture, no bacteria.
