Let's start by saying this, in my eyes, this game won't be won or lost by Oregon's defense..... Sounds crazy right? This game will be won or lost by Scott frost the OC of Oregon. Let's elaborate; Scott frost took over a chip kelly system that was exploiting defensive match ups and schemes to bring in his own version of an "uptempo" spread offense.... This offense is much different than years past. It relies more on a run game between the tackles and standard passing trees/routes. It's less complex and operates at a slower pace in lehmans terms. For a few years the ducks dominated the college football world in terms or offensive production and points per game because chip kelly was light years ahead of most DCs in the country. He was so revered at that point that bill belichick himself came to pick Kelly's brain about formations and schemes to incorporate into his own offense. For whatever reason Scott frost has decided to go against the grain and do things his way, which is why I'm terrified as an Oregon fan. I don't like Scott frosts scheme as you may now be able to infer.
Michigan state does not have the same pass defense they once had, in fact it's rather exploitable. Their strength is their ability to control the line of scrimmage and apply pressure on QBs. This was the same formula for success Stanford used against Oregon in previous seasons. If Scott frost doesn't change his ways in tonight's game there's a good chance Sparty eats up the run game and Oregon loses by 17 in embarrassing fashion. However, Oregon has supreme playmakers in almost every skill position and Michigan state realizes this, and in order for Oregon to win they will need to get the ball outside to their playmakers. Chip Kelly used to neutralize the pressure and blitzes applied by defenses by throwing bubble screens, wr screens, TE screens and HB swing passes.... You can refer to these as "long handoffs".... Essentially they are nothing more than moving the ball to the sidelines and forcing the defense to play you man to man with one or two blockers in front. By doing this we all know it forces the defense to play containment from the outside in, which then in turn allows for the running game between the tackles to take off. Scott frost doesn't understand this or is simply too arrogant to make the adjustments. His scheme is based off the same stupid base formation of trips wide with a TE on the weak side. Just trust me and watch the game, they will run this formation about twenty times..this formation allows for zero creativity and does not stretch the defense from sideline to sideline; instead it allows the defense to essentially play half the field and take away the other half.... Oregon has more playmakers than they've ever had before minus mariota, but if they spread Sparty out and use the screen game well to open up the middle of the field, the ducks will put on a clinic against a much slower defense. There is zero chance of Oregon pushing Sparty around in the simple Scott frost offense of zone handoffs up the middles and skinny posts. If frost can open up the playbook past page 2 the ducks have a legitimate shot at beating Sparty in east Lansing. Up to this point in time, and since I've been watching, frost has never made one adjustment to the formations to combat teams that have great run defenses and apply pressure. His mentality and scheme is to slow for the pac 12 in my opinion and I'm truly hoping he leaves sooner rather than later.
Sparty will score, that's a guarantee, but the ducks need to keep pace and search for a turnover or two in order to pull away.
My my play here is on Oregon covering the spread but water or not they win is unclear to me... Very small wager for me
• Oregon +5.5 (-110)
