FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Barring an unexpected late change, the New England Patriots are not planning to have injured quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in uniform for Thursday night's home game against the Houston Texans, according to a source close to the situation.
Garoppolo, who sprained the AC joint in his right throwing shoulder on Sunday, was officially listed as doubtful on the team's injury report. That means he's unlikely to play, but one line of thinking was that perhaps he could still dress and serve as an emergency option.

But the Patriots, at this time, aren't planning to take that course with Garoppolo.
That would leave the club with just one quarterback on its game-day roster: rookie Jacoby Brissett. The third-round draft pick from NC State replaced Garoppolo in Sunday's win over the Miami Dolphins and has worked as the starter in the days leading up to Thursday's game.

Julian Edelman, who played quarterback at Kent State before the Patriots switched him to receiver in 2009 after drafting him in the seventh round, would likely be the team's top emergency option. Texans coach Bill O'Brien said earlier this week that he remembers Edelman working at quarterback at times in practice during O'Brien's tenure as a Patriots assistant.
There is the possibility that the Patriots could still sign a free-agent quarterback before Thursday's game, though that would seemingly be a long shot. The club had quarterback T.J. Yates in for a workout earlier in the week and quarterback Sean Renfree in for a visit.

Three days of practice leading into a first career start. Tough spot for Jacoby Brissett. Not including season openers, he will be the fourth QB over the last 10 years to make his first career start on a Thursday. With the limited time to prep, each of the previous three lost. The last quarterback to win his first career start on a midseason Thursday was Drew Henson for the Cowboys in 2004. He was 4-of-12 for 31 yards and an interception, benefited from a defensive touchdown and got the win despite being benched for Vinny Testaverde, who threw the go-ahead score.

Pretty sure that Drew Henson start was on Thanksgiving.

Either way, I like the Texans here. Think NE is finally up against it, Brissett? Dropoff from Jimmy to him is rather large and Houston is a good all around team.

If you start him at WR and he goes in as QB you get those fantasy points too!

LOL.....Good question....I`ll take a guess and say no though.

Good luck Ham!

It would count actually.

This has happened before. Joe Webb for the Vikings was listed as a WR and started at QB a few times late in the season and got the QB points.

I don't think the Browns would move Pryor back to QB, especially with Corey Coleman now out too, but the possibility exists with him as well.

since everybody thinks this, including every Pats fan I talked to today, I decided to take Belichick and the points at home in prime time

it is a team game, other people tend to rise to the occasion (I hope) :)

If Brisset throws for 300 yards and 3 TD's, I think some of Brady's success is hogwash.

Cassel does well in NE, then sucks in KC, Garropolo does well in NE and now even a black 3rd round fake qb does well, that takes away from Brady thinking he is better than Peyton.

If Brisset throws 3 picks and loses, then he'll remind me of Andrew Luck

I have a feeling this is going to be a low scoring defensive battle.

Good luck!

Besides the Pats playing a 3rd string QB that wasn't even that good in college, I do think Houston is a little undervalued right now.

They handled KC pretty well at home and were only giving 1 in that spot. Fuller and Miller both nice upgrades, Osweiller is probably an upgrade atleast over what they had before. Front 7 is pretty good.

Not much of a fan of Osweiller overall as he seems like he could give away a game with turnovers vs almost any team but O'brien has always gotten the most of mediocre QB's. Hackenberg at PSU and made playoffs with Hoyer last year.

It'll be interesting. Even though it is just 1 game, probably isn't saying much for Houston's long-term prospects if NE gets this.
