In an unprecedented move, the ATP has formed an agreement with a sports betting company allowing them access to the betting records of individual tennis matches. The action follows a string of recent incidents which were the subject of “irregular” betting activity. Betting turnover on certain matches was up to thirty times that bet on other matches on the same day. Several of the plunges have been against injured players or players that have subsequently retired mid-match.

UK-based betting exchange Betfair, have signed a “memorandum of understanding” (MoU) with the ATP. Under the MoU, requests for information, including punters names and other personal details, can be made available to the ATP if they have reasonable grounds to suspect a “threat to the integrity” of a tennis match.

“The ATP called us. They were delighted to learn that they were able to get access to betting records to ensure their sport is clean,” said Betfair Director of Communications, Mark Davies. “It’s important they know who is involved,” he added. A similar agreement has already been formed and proven successful with the Jockey Club in the United Kingdom.

It is widely believed in the betting industry that ATP players and coaches have been involved in the recent betting plunges. An Australian bookmaker, who declined to be identified, said that, “There is no doubt that there are players involved given the amounts of money bet and the fact that the same players keep popping up.”

The ATP played down the agreement when asked to comment. A spokesman issued the following statement: “Our decision to enter into a memorandum of understanding with Betfair is just another step in our pro-active efforts to protect tennis from the influence of gambling, and consistent with the actions of other sports that have struck similar arrangements. As you know, the explosion of gambling on the internet has impacted sports, and we are vigilant and serious about doing all we can to make sure it does not impact tennis.”

How is it sour grapes to want to protect one's self from an unethical tour pro and his cronies to taking a dive or pull-up at fat chalk?

I actually agree with them, that tennis like boxing, with the head-to-head matchups at fat prices, leaves a lotta room for monster moves with a sophisticated betting network's reach, and the player with only his coach and few money movers(like in boxing) leaves a very small trail of loose-lips-that-can-sink-ships.

betfair is a P2P betting site and make their commission regardless of the result so what "sour grapes" are you talking about railbird??

the ability of punters to lay horses has led to accusations that a P2P site reduces the integrity of any racing and the same would apply to other sports.

the agreement with the ATP seems progressive in order to protect both the ordinary punter AND the reputation of the sport.

but maybe both concepts are beyond your limited brainpower railbird.

Im very aware its is 1v1 place, retard. Sourgrapes comes from folks losing there money and being inadequate and then crying fix. When the majority of people lose people start crying. ATP isnt very interested, they have on site gambling at Wimbledon.

Once you grasp the concept that it doesn't matter to them who wins then you "might" comprehend that they are only trying to protect the average bettor's interest from getting fleeced by fixes.

Americans cant even play at betfair. The only sport that is fixed is horseracing, and they only win 60% of those. The other sport that is fixed is the muslims doing crickett.

many sports i can think of have been fixed - soccer, cricket, formula 1, snooker, horse racing and especially boxing. It is inherent where there's money there's corruption but any effort to minimise this should be applauded. FYI Canadians CAN bet at Betfair.

Tennis matches have been thrown since the start of the pro era in 1968 and most likely before that too. It is well known in the sport and known as "tanking".

It does not normally involve an injury withdrawal however so I am not sure where the books are coming from on this issue.

Typically player A is in front of his home fans or needing a few ranking points to retain his place in the main draws instead of qualifying.

Player B is up against A and does not need the points for anything much in particular, in fact he could do with a rest as he did better than expected the last 2 weeks so has played a lot of games and next week is a Grand Slam or big event.

So player B is well up for the idea of losing to A and pocketing a share of the cash for making round 2.

This sort of thing dogs other h2h events such as chess, snooker and darts, sometimes golf play-offs. Poker tournaments routinely see prize money sharing deals, but in these other sports it is not so publicly done.

I bet 30 tennis matches per week on average and factor the "tank" into my capping especially in round 1, but even so still get caught out every now and then with it.

That is a non story, Yevgeny has no buisness being a 600 fav against anyone, the guy is washed up and just lost last week in the 2nd round after barely winning in the 1st round to a challanger player. I made a large play against Yevgeny his last 2 losses, it is no secret the guy sucks at this point. They should investigate the retards that made him that big a favorite in the 1st place. Yevgeny went through a divorce and lost lots of money, otherwise he would be retired right now, the guy is very unmotivated.
