Quarterback Eli Manning, who is engaged in contract extension talks with the New York Giants, is seeking to become the NFL's highest-paid player with his next contract, the NFL Network is reporting.

Giants owner John Mara has said that he hopes to have his franchise quarterback signed by the start of the season or soon after, but the NFL Network reports a "significant gap" remains between the team and Manning in negotiations.

</aside>Manning, whose contract expires after this season, is scheduled to make $17 million in base salary this season. Aaron Rodgers' deal, which he signed two years ago, tops the market with an average annual value of $22 million.

Several quarterbacks have agreed to new contracts this offseason, but none have surpassed the average annual value of Rodgers' contract. The Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson averages $21.9 million with his new contract; the Pittsburgh Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger averages $21.85 million with his new deal; and the San Diego Chargers' Philip Rivers and the Carolina Panthers' Cam Newton are at $20.81 million and $20.76 million, respectively, after their extensions.

Manning, who has led the Giants to two Super Bowl titles, signed a six-year, $97.5 million extension in 2009.

Now, in the final year of that contract, he is the 17th-highest paid quarterback in the league.

Amazing that neither PM nor TB make either highest paid list, although we know why

IMO, Eli is the most over rated qb to ever win multiple super bowl rings.

The Giants should trade him & let Eli & his brother & dad make millions from their commercials & advertisements.

He's definitely done & they're looking to pay him the highest?? Lmao .....I swear there are sone stupid people with too much money at their disposal in all sports.

I thought Eli was one of the worst 1st tear qbs I've ever seen when I saw him play his 1st year in the league.......then he goes on to beat the Pats twice with a lot of luck.

To me, he's the ugliest playing qb to ever win 2 bowls......& when I say ugly, I mean the way he plays the game, not his looks.

How much per interception does he want to get paid?

You think so?

I'm thinking he is saying this for one of his "Bad Comedian" commercials.

If Beckham is close to what he was last year then he is gonna extend Eli's relevance a few years.

Cruz seems to be recovering nicely from the ACL too so he definitely isn't lacking for weapons.

Vereen as well.

I'm guessing Beckham will be decent, Cruz will either be injured or just average and Vareen (as much as I like him), won't be a good fit for that offense.

These small WRs are doing better than ever now since you can't touch them. I'd imagine the league will be more ready for Beckham this time around but it's definitely easier for those guys to dominate now. Him, Brown, Cobb, Hilton, etc

A #HeightSupremacist like Vlad the Impaler overlooks this.

Not at all, in this bubble screen league, you don't need to be 6'4" with 4.4 speed and can jump. Not to mention, you also need a good qb to shine those those skills. On;y 1 I can I can think of in the League is Calvin Johnson. The receiver position is so so dependant on qb play.

Yeah my bad, you are a different type of supremacist. I got it confused.

Agree. No way Antonio Brown would be as valuable as someone like Calvin or Julio Jones even 4-5 years ago because those guys can make plays without even getting open. Now getting open is so easy for guys like Brown and Beckham that it negates that size and strength combo a little.

If TY Hilton is on the Rams, he would be considered average at best. Once you have the qb, everything else works. That is why teams that obviously have none should draft 2 or 3 every year.
