If the past is any indication, Mike Mussina won't have to do much in his return from the disabled list to baffle the Minnesota Twins.
After sitting out nearly six weeks due to right elbow stiffness, Mussina will make his return to the New York Yankees' rotation when they continue their series at the Metrodome.
Mussina has not pitched since allowing seven runs and nine hits over six innings in a 9-1 loss to Detroit on July 6. The 35-year-old right-hander went straight to the DL and has gone through a deliberate rehabilitation program.
``He feels confident he's ready to go,'' Yankees manager Joe Torre said of Mussina, who is 9-6 with a 5.20 ERA in 18 starts this season.
Torre is giving Mussina every chance to succeed in his return as he juggled his rotation so the veteran ace could face the Twins, a team he has owned throughout his career.
Mussina, who is expected to go no more than five innings Wednesday, is 20-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 24 career starts against the Twins, including a 10-2 mark with a 2.84 ERA at the Metrodome.
Even though Mussina has dominated Minnesota, the Twins may have the edge in this pitching matchup because manager Ron Gardenhire will give the ball to Johan Santana.
The 25-year-old left-hander has been arguably as good as anyone in baseball over the last two-plus months, going 10-2 with a 1.66 ERA in 13 starts. He has struck out 129 over his last 97 1-3 innings, and has pitched at least seven innings 12 times during his surge. He has allowed just 47 hits during that span.
``I always trust myself and the things that I can do, but I also trust my teammates,'' Santana said recently. ``I trust that we're a team and that's all that matters.''
The Twins ended a 13-game regular season losing streak to the Yankees with an 8-2 win on Tuesday. Corey Koskie went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and right-hander Brad Radke shut New York down over seven innings.
Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter went 1-for-5, extending his hitting streak to 17 games.
