That number is a GLOBAL figure... Granted most of it is from the US - but looking at Commercial casinos in '03 ($26.5B [28.9B including racinos])
Not to mention the 20B from lotteries, 14B from tribal gaming, and the 4B from racing.
Add in a billion or two spent on charity gaming (the billion or two that is recorded anyway) and you have about 70B alone spent in the US on gambling - which doesnt even include amounts spent (lost) by gamblers at their local book.

When you say online gamling isnt going anywhere you aren't kidding... Compared to other forms of gambling in the US even in 2010 when one might expect it to be fully matured, you still arent even getting 1/3 of the market share... And its the easiest choice of all of them.

it was 110 million in 2002... probably not much more in 03.

They usually estimate illegal US wagering at $35 billion, but that includes things like office pools and informal bets without a bookie. That number is so damn high because the anti-gaming people love to throw the kitchen sink into their numbers trying to get someone to back their cause. They always love to say things like "uh oh, NCAA tourney time coming up" and I start thinking that temptation to play the $10 office pool may be too much for the problem gambler. This business ain't going anywhere, even if the US effectively blocked it, which will never happen, the rest of the world is quickly coming in to overtake the Americans domination in terms of being online players. When bookmakers can openly advertise up to the second odds on a match being played on TV and you can then bet that with a text message on a cell phone, that is a pretty powerful incentive to gamble! Much of the world will have that in the next 5-10 years, but the US government somehow thinks they can "protect" us from all that harm it will cause. Whatever!
Just to be clear for comparison purposes (i'm sure you have the idea bill but for anyone else) the $35 billion in wagering would translate (roughly speaking) into between $2B and $3B in in revenue.
Using Nevada times 50 as a theoretical maximum for the US - would translate into $5.5B in Illegal onshore bookmaking revenue ($91B in handle if you prefer).
However the $110 million Nevada wins is probably realistically much higher than even the largest thoeretical bookmaking market even in say LA or NY... Assuming complete legality of course things would balance out due to competition but right now Nevada is the 2nd most popular tourist destination in the US and of course the #1 gambling destination - with really no major competition (though many in Nevada would argue the impact of tribal gaming just over the border).
If LA and New York had legal sportsbooks (provided they werent taxed any higher than the 6+% that Nevada is) they would be large but still I think the maximum of $110M would be tough to reach, and of course most metropolitan centers would generate far less.

It feels good right now to be so technologically ahead of the rest of the world but chances are that soon enough this will be one way we will start to see ourselves fall behind - and the political minds that insist on keeping us behind will eventually be squeezed out of office by the "rest of us"
