Economy Firing on All Cylinders
Joint Economic Committee ^

Today, the Department of Labor released its latest report on state-by-state employment data for April 2004.

Highlights:

--Over the past year, the unemployment rate has fallen in 47 states.

--Non-farm payroll employment increased in 45 states in April.

--Over the past year, employment has increased in 44 states.

The latest state-by-state data are consistent with recent job growth nationwide. In the past 8 months, over 1.1 million new payroll jobs have been created. Over 800,000 new jobs have been created in 2004 alone. If the current pace of job growth for 2004 continues, over 2.6 million jobs will be created this year. In addition, the current unemployment rate is 5.6 percent, well below its recent peak of 6.3 percent and below the average unemployment rates of the 1970’s, 1980’s, and 1990’s.

I would hate to be a "greeter" at Wal*Mart or on the french fry team at Burger King. What is the mean dollar per hour of all of these jobs that are being created? Do they replace the jobs that millions have lost in terms of salary and fringe benefits? I am willing to bet that the majority of the new jobs are in the service industry, food, retail and health services. The problem w/ health services is that a person will needed further training to be a RN, x-ray technician etc.. Mere window dressing for an administration that is undeniably the WORSE in US history. The ill-fated war is Junior's Waterloo and to distract from it will take devine intervention which he has already tried.

Moody's Upgrades California, Citing Recovery

By Jim Christie

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A leading Wall Street ratings agency on Friday raised California's credit rating, citing an improving economy, the first such upgrade in four years and a move that promised to bring down the state's borrowing costs on $44 billion in debt.

Analysts saw the unexpected credit upgrade by Moody's Investors Service as an endorsement of the steps Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites) has taken to bring California back from the brink of a fiscal crisis that drove its credit ratings near junk levels and had threatened to effectively shut the state out of the bond market for new borrowing.

Citing an "established trend of recovery," Moody's raised California's rating to A3 from Baa1, reversing a downgrade it made in December out of concern over continued political deadlock and a move by Schwarzenegger to cut car license fees.

Moody's rivals Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings said they want to see the budget that California lawmakers pass for the fiscal year starting in July before weighing ratings changes of their own.

Schwarzenegger, who has proposed a budget plan that would close a $14 billion budget gap without raising taxes, applauded Moody's: "Their financial analysts have had a chance to carefully review our revised budget and our economic outlook, and they've concluded that it warrants an improvement in California's standing in the nation's financial markets."

Moody's upgrade affects about $35 billion of outstanding general obligation bonds and nearly $9 billion of lease revenue bonds and enhanced tobacco bonds backed by the state's general fund. The upgrade was Moody's first since September 2000 for California's general obligation debt.

Employment in California's private sector and personal income in the state have resumed a "moderate pace of growth," and tax collections signal an economic recovery, Moody's said.

California's credit rating may be in line for additional upgrades, said Evan Rourke, a municipal strategist at Popular Securities in New York. "I would expect that barring some kind of disaster or extraordinary event, you're likely to see further improvement. It's a reflection of the improved economy and credit conditions," Rourke said.

WAITING FOR THE BUDGET

"Nothing has really changed," said S&P analyst Steven Zimmermann, whose firm rates the state's general obligation debt BBB with a positive outlook. "We'll continue with that and we'll look to see what the budget is like."

Fitch Ratings analyst Richard Raphael said his firm, which rates California's general obligation debt BBB, with a negative outlook, also is waiting to examine the budget. "We've basically said that budgetary decisions will be the primary rating factor in the future," Raphael said.

Ratings agencies in recent years slashed California's credit rating to near-junk status because it failed to pass balanced budgets on time. It has the lowest rating of any state.

Schwarzenegger's new plan reflected an ongoing gain of more than $1 billion from stronger tax receipts than forecast in January and strong personal income growth.

Despite its upbeat assessment of California's economy, Moody's said its new rating for the state's debt remained "well below" an average rating of Aa2 for all states, due to California's "ongoing fiscal challenges."

California's legislative analyst has warned that provisions in the revised budget plan would cause shortfalls to return, with annual deficits above $6.5 billion well into the future.

California Treasurer Phil Angelides said Moody's upgrade was "welcome news, as it might help lower the state's future borrowing costs." However, Angelides, a Democrat, who has called for Republican Schwarzenegger to propose tax increases, said the state must address its structural budget deficit.

"Moody's itself said as much," Angelides said.

Might have to work?

Does this imply that the elfy idiot is going to start taking the advice from ecomonic masterminds such as Paul O'neil instead of sticking to some irrelevant policy that Bushy doesn't understand anyways?

Yey, a break through.

Too bad that crazy conservative took on John Lennon - he'd have a great song about this little crisis that we call "Bushism."

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A seller on eBay tried to auction off a cough drop that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (news) allegedly used, then tossed into a trash can — listing the item under the heading "Schwarzenegger's DNA."

But the ad posted on the popular Web site Friday was quickly yanked after eBay decided it fell into the category of "body parts," which the Web site will not list for sale.

The original listing was accompanied by two photos of a half-consumed cough drop and the words, "Own a piece of DNA from the man himself." The seller indicated she or he had seen Schwarzenegger discard the lozenge at a recent public event and had retrieved it.

"Like many people who collect items from international stars this is a must have," the ad stated.

The California governor's office confirmed Schwarzenegger routinely sucks on cough drops, but would say little more.

An eBay spokesman said the seller, identified only as "AMF814," could put the item back up for sale if he or she reclassified it as a collectible. As of Saturday, it was not among the 115 Schwarzenegger collectibles listed.

Patriot - your right it is no way helpful. Just something I came across that had to do with Arnold. The post is a bit of a joke here in this mostly grim forum.

I've gone to work for 29 years straight, and who was President has never played a factor in whether I worked.

I operate a residential gardening service. I started doing it in Dallas TX in 1980 and later relocated to TampaBay area in 1998.

My advertising method is fairly simple and the reason I've stuck with it for 24 years is that it produces measurable, predictable results in terms of how many people contact me seeking my work.

In both Dallas and TampaBay, those results were the same for 21 years, not varying by more than 1/3 of a percentage point, 12 months a year.

Beginning in late 2001 and to this day - over 30 months - the response rate on my advertising has dropped by 25-30%. I am sure there are a number of factors, but the underlying cause is obvious.

The average homeowner/renter is less confident about spending the $100 or so per month (or per one-time job) that it takes to have my work.

Why they are less confident probably had some genesis in 9/11/01, and that lack of confidence has obviously not been addressed by the powers that be in the ensuing 30 months.

I am one who believes the President OTUS has much less to do with 'job creation' than they would lead us to believe. And I include both GW Bush and soon-to-be Pres Kerry. They would like the public to think, "Hey if you elect me, your job situation will improve", when it likely has much to do with other areas.

That being said, what the President, along with the U.S. Congress CAN DO, is influence the economy based on how responsible a federal budget they operate. And its clear that the past 40 months has seen the most irresponsible increase in spending combined with a massive reduction in income tax receipts from the high end wage earners that the U.S.A. has had in its 230 year history.

So speaking for us, we don't Hate Bush. But we won't shed a tear when he and his are themselves removed from the employment rolls this coming November.

I don't know about your political muppets on capitol hill but ours do very nicely.

If a UK politician gets the boot he stays on full pay for a minimum of 12 months afterwards to "cushion the burden" of becoming unemployed.
They get amazing pension benefits too.

They also get to vote on their own wage rises..!!

They're also amongst the only group of 'workers' that get as much holiday time as schoolkids.

I won't even start on expenses..

...bastards...bastards...bastards...

And they think they're worth every penny

I think all of us around here have jobs if we want them, that isn't our complaint. We want this idiot to stop meddling in our lives following the bad advice he is getting from his people. Simple enough a request?

United States Congresscritters receive permanent 'retirement' pay even after serving only one term (2 or 6 years).

They also receive lifetime, ummmmmm, well let's call it what it is - universal health care for them and their dependents.

Seriously, I totally agree with the budget statement you make. Under Willie Boy things were good because of more sensible fiscal spending. Balancing the budget must be top priority along with shrinking the trade defecit.
