So, what's it cost to start a standard forum/website?

dont do one for computer problems - people only come when they have problems and leave when done.

don't do one for gambling degens - people go and then leave once they go busto (rx is an exceptional site that has a "community")

don't do one on a TV show - unless you are okay with traffic only 6-7 months throughout the year...and extremely staggering traffic (hard cause you need servers that can withstand the timeslot of everyone on the forum....while it is ghost town the other 6 days of the week)

don't do one for homosexual lifestyles - JT might ban you from therx for stirring up competition

If you can find a sports team without a webforum (not sure if there are any) then that would be a good one. Maybe some popular college team you like. Sports are seasonal but if it is an NFL team, they are on those sites year-round.

There's a lot of ways for you to get it started with tools that are easy to use. If you use something like DotNetNuke, a forum module and a custom skin, you could get it all for under $500 easy.

I'd guess you could do it for less than a hundred bucks with free forum software and a free CMS like joomla or wordpress or drupal, but to do it right it's probably going to cost you about 2,000 dollars. After all you have to have a server to handle hosting all those visitors.

And you probably need a budget to get all those people there. It would be an awful waste of money if you started a site and nobody ever showed up.
