Pretty big difference between the 2003 Kobe Bryant, tons of endorsements, 3x champ, 1 of the faces of the league vs Porzingis, who is a good young player but hasn't played in 1.5 years so he has been out of the public spotlight. And the story lacks any credibility whereas Kobe's case was far more ambiguous at the time.
If say, James Harden or Steph Curry had a rape allegation similar to Kobe's tomorrow then I'm sure it would be all over the news. That's probably the equivalent to Kobe's situation.

A lot of people forget this now but the story kinda faded a little when the season started because Kobe gave that interview to Jim Gray about how much he disliked Shaq and talked tons of shit about him and then the rest of the season was about their feud rather than his rape allegations. Perhaps you could question if that was orchestrated or not, but it did change some of the narrative around the Lakers going forward for that season.

Whether he was guilty or not, it was in his best interest to pay her the go away money. The case/trial had been lingering for like a year when he did that.
He was a free agent that summer and it would've been prudent to get it out of the way before the Lakers gave him his new 140 million dollar deal. Also, the sooner it got out of the way, the sooner he could regain his endorsements that he lost. Pretty much every major brand he was with temporarily dropped him after that.
