Ya, American's were in the dark about how screwed up these places were all the way back in the idealistic world of 2003.
Now pretty much everyone knows that most of these places ain't doing any better anytime soon so as long as the problems are contained, don't break anything. This isn't Japan or Germany after WW2 where they had the economic/cultural know-how to return to superpower status within a few generations.
