Rule #1...

BOL in any event, wilheim
Thanks for the detailed answer Wil. I've never really understood the reasoning for going tout if one is a winning player. But I guess if one were low on outs?
Looks like theres's lots of horror stories on here.

I've been seriously considering doing some projects that where recently presented to me that some would maybe lump in as and
or claim to be going "Tout" (only because my posting plays in the forums would end). I can't really discuss anything in the moment.
But here is my take on having any type of job or involvement pertaining to this industry (sportsbooks, watch dog sites, services, touts, etc). Just about anything in this industry can be stereotyped, negatively portrayed, and mis perceived. This industry-hobby-profession whatever it is to you is something I have a great passion for. I love the art of capping. I truly consider it an art form. But I know people who have no involvement in this industry and or knowledge of it (they don't bet on sports) who look at it the same way people in some of the various posts above lump in all the services, touts, etc. They sterotype bettors, bookies, etc. See them all in a negative way. They see other forms of gambling like Poker as hip and cool and portrayed very well in the main stream. They look at Fantasy Sports as fun for the die hard sports fan. But they see all bettors as degenerates , they see this as a no skill involved coin flip type of activity, bookies as a bunch of guys trying to get some colllege athlete to shave points/fix a game, Etc. Which we all here know is not even close to being accurate and or true. I think the long winded point I'm trying to make is just about anything in this industry-hobby-profession could be blindly lumped altogether or stereotyped (books, watch dog sites, touts, Etc). My grandfather when I was a kid told me once "Kevy, when people show you who they really are......believe them" at the time it pertained to making friendships, socializing, etc. But I feel that is something that can apply here in this subject/debate. You can't judge every single service, tout, book, watch dog site, forum posters, Etc as one big group that is all going to be the same. In each group/category you let the person or business show you who they really are (by actions or inactions----by their good or by their bad) and then you believe them. Hopefully when I make my transition to my next chapter in this industry, I will be looked at for what I'm doing or contributing and not lumped in and or stereotyped based on how others have represented themselves.

Sounds easy in theory, but believe me I had some of the best leads possible and there was absolutly no way to get anywhere close to 100 people on a game. My record may have been 25 and for the record, I never sided any of my clients. I did on one occasion give all of MY clients the opposite side of what my coworkers were giving theirs. It was when I first started and only did it the one time and even though I won and they lost, I learned it is the wrong thing to do.

A tout has to be crafty. I'll explain how one local tout ( Sebastian) did it. He was/is a local CT/ NY area radio personality, had kind of a talk show morning FM format show on an oldies rock station....kind of a minor league Howard stern type. He started giving out NFL picks ( on the air) maybe around 2000-2002. He did extremely well with it. Radio station didn't mind that.

Next step was for him to start his own website and direct the listeners there for the free picks while giving maybe one out on the air....that went well too....then start charging ( big). Radio station changed formats, he was gone....but used them to go tout successfully. After some 8+ years his tracked picks ( by others) lost a ton, but a nice hot streak probably made him millions ( ?).

He is not a good tout but did it well. Few have the luxury of being on the radio.

He was giving out picks when I first heard him in seventh grade. Those dates may have been when he had his winning years, but definitely not when he started doing it

So just keep giving out picks and eventually you'll have a winning year and you can start charging people. The internet makes that easy

But if it takes a decade or so for that to happen, a media job that pays you during the .500 years would make it a lot easier

That's when I became aware of him. If he started in 1995 or whenever then did good in 2000-2001 or whenever, he had his crop of current followers seeing him go 60% ( or whatever).....and he knew what to do with the hot year(s) when it finally came.

Radio was huge for that tout. Play up a good NFL season or two into big bucks ! Touting is sales and he had the means to do it for free.

In short one needs a big audience to see/ hear your picks and a HOT streak. Most touts that start at RX ( or similar) fail quickly because they can't get enough players to pay them and then revert to the mean and get killed by the vig.

Few touts are worthwhile, and even if they are great ( like RAS) they get too many followers and you can't get line value. You can find a guy here that picks better than 99% + of touts if you look carefully. Plenty of good cappers on RX in stuff like NHL, if you don't want to bet your own stuff.

One usually becomes a tout by thinking they are better than they really....

I'll disagree. I think many realise they can't beat beat a book like Bookmaker ( hit over 52.38%) long-term. They just want to get paid for 50% picks. I think many don't even bet their own picks.
