1) Pick a specialty and devote all of your time to perfecting that one skill set - whether it be NL cash games (highly suggested), limit cash games, multi table tourneys, sit & go's, whatever. It takes time. A year into my poker playing days I thought I was the greatest player alive. Looking back now I realize I was still a baby. People don't realize how complex this game really is and how even the smallest leak in your game can turn a winning player into a losing player longterm. There isn't much margin for error

2) Lay your hand down when you're fairly certain that it's beat. Give absolutely nothing away. As others have been saying with their advice, easier said than done

3) Realize that poker is a loooooong term investment. There will be ups and downs. If you can't handle the serious downs that will inevitably come, find another hobby/profession

Check out my poker journal jasin, I play a pretty tight game, although my pokertracker says otherwise. No matter how tight the internet is compared to live, money can still be made.

I went to a festival last night, they were playing 1/2NL, was the softest NL game in the United States. I put my stamp of approval on that game, holy shit it was bad. I was so mad at myself for getting their an hour before they close (I was just up their because of a big fireworks display they have), had I known I would of set up shop and played all day Fri/sat/sun. Players calling 20 raises with Q2, calling down to the river with Ace high, calling down to the river with nothing, hitting a 3 on the river then firing out. It was the worst poker id ever seen.

Worst poker I ever seen was Casino Niagara $1/$2 and $2/$4 no limit. Went there a few times on the weekend and it was unreal how poor the players were. Made Party's $.05/$.10 game look like "the big game" in Vegas by comparison.

I was thinking same thing PKJ. It was sick, they have another oktoberfest festival which I am going to be at all day if its anything like I saw. Best part was the players were kind of assholes as well, one guy slow rolled every hand he had at showdown and yelled pay me.

I took his entire stack on a play where he basically showed me I had the best hand. So I have 36 of hearts on the button and of course every single person has limped in so I decide to see if I can hit something. Flop comes down 2 2 4. One guy puts out 2 dollar bet (ive not once ever seen the min bet after the flop at a casino, anyways), and basically everyone calls including me. Turn is the 5, hitting my gutshot. However, still a scary board with these morons. Board is 2 2 4 5 and I have 36. The moron makes a 10 bet and its folded around to me and I call (im hoping here I can get more money, I cant put him on a boat.) River is an Ace and he pushes his entire basket (yes we were playing out of baskets like they would give you full of french fries.) Now He could easily have many different hands here that beat me, boat wise, but not straight or flush. So im thinking and he is yapping and yapping, saying you don't even have a pair, you would of called by now (I'm pretty sure he is trying to goad me into the pot), then he does a very very dumb thing. He goes, I bet you can't even beat this, and shows the Kc. I call in a fucking heartbeat and he says "HA"! and flips the K3, I slow roll the fuck out of him like he has done to everyone else as I flip the 3 first and say "I have one of those" and then flip the 6 and say "this helps though right?".

Final result = him pissed, me happy and everyone else just staring wanting to give away the rest of their money but the place was shutting down for the fireworks.

Best part, he was wearing a Steelers hat, niiiice

it seems as though I cant....I'll win sometimes but I always run into some fool who has no business in a hand then smokes me. For example.....I hav J/J in pocket in $1 NL game....I raise to $10.......get one caller (gotta do this b/c online people play all sorts of crap).
Flop comes 7c/10h/3d.............I bet $15 and get called. Turn card is Queen. I bet $20....he raises I call and of course I lose. The moron had Q/2 in pocket!!!! Called my $10 and $15 bets in a $1 NL Game with nothing!!! I am by no means great but cmon.....you cant win when you have idiots like this at the table......besides, it sems like too many flushes and striaghts hit too online.

the wolf, not too get all preachy here, but I think your problem and maybe THEE biggest problem people have in NL hold em, especially at the lower levels is overvaluing their hands. Of course that was a bad play on his part, but really what did you have? You had 1 pair, the most beat on hand in poker, 1 pair. You want these guys in your game, trust me. When you flop that set and they hit top pair, these are the guys that pay you off. When you hit that straight/flush draw, even though it is right their on the board, they can't lay down their hand.

My biggest advice to ANYONE playing NL poker, do NOT go broke with 1 pair, no matter if its AA down too 22. Their will be better spots, sometimes you have to go for it (all depends on situations), but if you have a healthy stack, my advice is too not go broke with that one pair.

You're complaining that someone will call 25bb with absolutely nothing?

He called $25 in bets before the turn. These are the players you should be exploiting.

easiest money is Omaha HL, make sure you have an Ace and 3 to the wheel, no 6 thru 9. play multi games.

Railbird likes to hang out at little league games and he doesn't even have any children. Hmmmm... I wonder why?

I would say the three keys are 1- dont play tired( try to limit yourself to at most 2 hours). 2- try not to tilt off your money after the kind of beat shown above(eaisier said than done). 3- dont play when you've been drinking( extremly hard to do when you've been drinking) ... I cant do any of these, thats why I lose. good luck!

The BEST PIECE OF ADVICE that i can give is to NOTTTTTTT

GIVE FREE LESSONS! Sure that other guy made a dumbass play, but dont tell him about it. Just hope that he tries the same thing 20 times over! I paid alot of money in live casinos 10 years ago to learn how to play live tournaments. Now I am very good at them. In live play, I NEVER say a thing when someone gets lucky on me or makes a bad play.

One of the worst things that I have seen in live play, is when someone makes a stupid call, loses the hand, and then the winner of the hand laughs at them and tells how much of a play that was. Do you think that person WILL EVER make that sort of play again? Hell no.

So no matter what, NEVER berate a person about his call when you win the hand. As a matter of fact, I usually tell the other guy in live play that he got unlucky and will get me next time (with his 10% call)
