Dansk Tipstjeneste is raking in revenues from its gambling machines: meanwhile, thousands of gambling addicts nationwide are grappling with depression and thoughts of suicide


Even though just six percent of the nation's gambling machines are located in Dansk Tipstjeneste's Pitstop game cafés, one-third of the gambling addicts currently in treatment for their affliction say they play at Pitstop machines. The trend was outlined in a new report from the National Centre for Gambling Addiction, based on responses given by all those in treatment from 2003 to the present, Radioavisen and P3 news reported last week.

Dansk Tipstjeneste, the national lottery monopoly, has enjoyed massive success with its Pitten and Pitstop game machine concepts. Gamblers crammed nearly DKK 1.5 billion (200 million euros) into Tipstjenesten's slot machines last year, and turnover rose 60 percent from 2002 to 2003.

But there's a dark side to the financial success of the nation's gambling machines. Slot machines are the most addictive form of gambling, and nearly half of the gambling addicts in treatment have grappled with thoughts of suicide. One-third has turned to crime to finance their gambling addiction.

A Queens, New York man who marked his 63rd birthday over the weekend admitted he punched out a slot machine at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem early Monday, leaving the casino with a $1,510 bill for a replacement video display screen.

A criminal complaint filed against the suspect, John Kim of the Woodside section of the borough, does not say what prompted him to allegedly punch the slot machine.

It does say that surveillance video shows Kim punching the machine around 12:58 a.m. Surveillance also spotted Kim in the casino parking lot waiting for a departing bus. Police were dispatched around 1:46 a.m.

The casino’s security supervisor talked to Kim on the parking lot, where he admitted to punching the machine, according to the complaint filed by Trooper Salvatore Alaimo of state police at Bethlehem.

The complaint also notes that Kim, once inside the security office, did not have a valid identification card and could not provide a permanent address. But the complaint’s lead sheet says Kim lives on 43rd Avenue in Woodside.

Kim was charged with criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned at Monday morning by on-duty District Judge Diane Marakovits of Northampton and committed to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $3,000 bail.

Some of these degenerate video poker players have tremendous stamina.................if they would take a few hours and learn to play the game correctly and play in the right venues, they would have an income for life instead of losing everything they earn and/or steal...............................

lots of casino gamblers can play far longer than an 8 hour shift at VP, slots, real poker, BJ, or any game where you sit down. Craps is harder because you have to stand the whole time.

Video poker just puts people in a trance because there is actually some thought involved to keep your attention. When I was a bartender in Vegas. ( local bar- 15 slots)...I've seen people be there at 11pm when I started and still be there at 7 am when I left, often at the same machine. Most of these people don't even want to talk while playing....They'll suck down 20-30 or more drinks, they just slide the empty glass forward while you wordlessly give them a new one. They toked well, though !The only real break in play was while they signed another marker slip for more quarters or dollar tokens ! They barely even went to the bathroom and did not want you or anyone else watching how they played.

They played consistently because they played fast as Hell. The machines had unbeatable payscales anyway....plus they were rigged to hit fewer Royals than normal.

These were operated by American Coin company in Vegas in the early to mid 1990's

Feel like state run video poker is one of the greatest evils... It's a tax on the poor, essentially. All day at the bars I frequent these degens are coming in, losing money they clearly can't afford to lose.

Video poker is the crack cocaine of gambling,highly addictive.I belong to many social clubs that had 8 to 10 of these machines in the back rooms of there clubs.You would see the same faces playing these machines all the time.Most guys would beg borrow and steal to play these things,and there were lots of horror stories.....Got a call from a wife of one of the players,that he was pawning her jewelry to play....Guys would cash there pay checks at the clubs on pay days,this had to stop because guys would go home broke,and there wives would threaten to call the cops,If they didn't get there money back.

As bad as I feel for these losers, the game would not be profitable for the many of us that use the machines as a source of income if not for them.................what's amazing, is you can have individuals in this town for 20+ years that are not what one would consider mentally incompetent by any stretch of the imagination, and yet they still don't get it when it comes to video poker, but have hundreds of theories on the game and the best way to approach it.....................................................some of the worst of the bunch are bartenders.

If you are playing deuces wild and you flop 3 deuces and lets say J J. Do you take the 5 of a kind or do you throw away the JJ and go for the 4 deuces?

you would have to hit 2+ dueces 4 of a kind to beat the payout on the 25 - 5 of a kinds.

in other words take your generous gift and onto the next one

I dont play much but the other day I had that happen to me.
Someone was watching me and said I was an idiot for dropping the 88 I believe it was.

The 5 of a kind payed 120. the 4 deuces payed 1600.
You also have to calculate on the redraw you are still going to at least get a 4 of kind even if you dont hit your 4 deuces.

Thanks for the info on the 10 10+ thing.
Will keep that in mind.
