Four people have been shot dead at a shopping centre in Burlington, Washington state, police say.
The Cascade Mall and nearby shops have been sealed off and a search is under way.
It is not known if more than one person fired the shots, and the motive is unclear.
However, a suspected gunman was seen heading towards a nearby motorway, Interstate 5, the Seattle Times reported.
Washington State Patrol spokesman
Mark Francis said on Twitter that emergency medical teams had entered the shopping centre and that people were being evacuated to a nearby church. It is not known how many people, if any, were wounded.
He described the suspect seen walking towards the motorway as a "Hispanic male wearing grey".
Mr Francis said the gunman, or gunmen, had left the scene before police arrived.
Emergency management officials have told people to avoid the area near the Cascade Mall and drivers are being urged to keep nearby major roads clear.
Burlington is about 65 miles (105km) north of Seattle.
