They already tried doing it without Kobe's influence. Then they learned quickly that the team doesn't do well when Kobe doesn't respect a coach enough. They were already searching for a coach who would fit around Kobe so why not go directly to the source and let Kobe put in his 2 cents anyways. It's sad unfortunately but that's the way it is.

Trade him for some young talent while you can still get something for him.
