National champion might be worth a few thousand in sponsorship. Winning an Olympic medal is worth a few million. If they don't want that, any athlete is always free to let someone else earn it.

But outside of an injury or probably drug bust can't imagine it would ever happen. Sort of like asking Should you be allowed to abstain from sex for your whole life?
