Sammy Sosa is one of the major league baseball players who tested positive for a banned substance in 2003, the New York Times is reporting, citing lawyers who have knowledge of the drug-testing results from that year.

That year was the first in which Major League Baseball conducted survey tests to see if mandatory, random drug-testing was needed. There were no penalties for a positive result in 2003.

Results from the 2003 surveys were supposed to remain anonymous.
ESPNDeportes.com reported in early June that Sosa, 40, was planning on announcing his formal retirement from baseball soon, and would not address allegations of steroid use.

"I will calmly wait for my induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Don't I have the numbers to be inducted?" said Sosa, who presently serves the Dominican government as special ambassador for investment opportunities.
Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was one of those on the 2003 list as having tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. The test result was first reported by Sports Illustrated in February, and Rodriguez admitted to having taken steroids while with the Texas Rangers from 2001 to 2003.

A lawyer for Sosa, Jay Reisinger, declined comment to the Times. An MLB official likewise declined comment to the newspaper.

Steroids or no steroids, was baseball ever as fun for everyone as it was when Sosa & McGuire was battling for the home-run record?!

Even those who didn't follow sports found interest during that time.....

The taxi cabs in the Dominican Republic used to keep an update on the Mac and Sosa count by painting their windows daily....plus the bars and the restaurants would keep daily totals....it was a fun ordeal....

Too bad about all the controversy in later years...who knew?

That's why people looked the other way when people cheated.
Exactly.
When Sosa and Mac were chasing each other everybody with a 1/2 brain knew they were juicing.

I was in Atlantic City on 9/8/98 in a sports bar across the street from the Claridge when Mac hit the milestone, and the place was packed, everybody and their sister knew Mac was 'on' something, but nobody cared.

I just don't understand this list that they have. This was supposed to be a confidential drug test. Supposedly 104 people failed the test and only two have been released. If your going to release one or two names then release all of the names. If it was confidential no names should have ever come out but it isn't fair to Sosa and ARod that their names have come out and there are still 102 other players that could potentially get away with cheating the game.

On a brighter note , Sosa will be receiving a lifelong supply of sugar cane, bananas and coffee from his native country of the Dominican Republic.

What I'd like to know is, why is this info coming out now?

sosa opened up his big fat mouth a week ago or so saying that he should be in the hall of fame and was clean. I remember seeing it on pti and washington times. I'm guessing he pissed off the wrong person.
