I only went one time, in 2001. A crew of about 5 buddies went down. We had great weather, and a great time. I never knew anything about the Friday slate of races until we got there, but The Oaks was by far way more fun than Saturday. Local holiday, all the schools and businesses closed, relaxed security, not as big of a crowd, Cheap Trick playing in the infield, lots of titties, great day.
The next day for the Derby, one of my buddies decides to try and sneak in a bottle of vanilla rum by pouring it into a ziplock bag and carrying it in his underwear. While we are in line, it starts to leak, and his balls get marinated in rum. He claims to this day that his nutsack was numb from the alcohol bath.
And then, we all decided to try these "mint julep" things. The Derby commemorative glass was $8, and I thought it was kind of small for the price. Well, I was never a big bourbon drinker (I am now) and that first sip was the strongest thing I ever tasted. But, hey, these things get kind of sweet as you get closer to the bottom! Had a few. Got fucking ripped. Good times.
