Wow. That, as they say, changes everything. Would this also mean he could not return for the playoffs at all?

The Bulls are without a doubt capable. Defense goes a long way in the playoffs. And they are athletic with young players that are only getting better.

But what do you think now?

Hold the phones.

The Heat ruled center Shaquille Oneal out of Wednesday night's game against the Indiana Pacers, and spokesman Tim Donovan said O'Neal would fly home with the team and have an MRI taken Thursday. His status for the Heat's next home game on Saturday against Orlando has not yet been determined.

Shaq to have MRI on knee Thursday

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=610 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top width=450>[font=Verdana,Arial, Helvetica]INDIANAPOLIS -- Heat center Shaquille O'Neal was walking unassisted Wednesday, a day after taking a frightening fall in the first two minutes of his team's 105-101 overtime loss in Chicago.

The initial diagnosis remains a strained left knee, although more will not be known until an MRI is taken Thursday in Miami and the joint is examined by team physician Harlan Selesnick.

[font=Verdana,Arial, Helvetica]O'Neal traveled with the team overnight Tuesday to Indianapolis, but the decision was made to wait for further evaluation until the team returns early Thursday morning to South Florida. The 7-foot-1, 330-pound veteran is being held out of tonight's game against the Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse.

O'Neal went down clutching his left knee 1 minute, 35 seconds into Tuesday's game at the United Center after he stumbled into Bulls power forward Othella Harrington while trying to corral a pass from teammate Dwyane Wade.

While O'Neal needed assistance getting to the X-ray room, he was able to walk several feet back to the Heat locker room on his own at the United Center.

He limped to the team bus late Tuesday night, but by the time the team arrived early Wednesday in Indianapolis that limp was gone.

After missing 15 games in each of the previous three seasons while with the Lakers, O'Neal, until Wednesday night, had missed only one this season, a Dec. 21 victory over the Celtics, with a bruised left calf.

The knee has been a problem for O'Neal before. He missed three games for the Lakers in 2002-03 with a sore left knee and 28 for the Lakers in '96-97 with a hyper-extended left knee.

"Of course it's a concern,'' coach Stan Van Gundy said after Tuesday's game. "Obviously it's a concern."

By Saturday's home game against Orlando, a reinforcement should be in place, with Alonzo Mourning to join the team as a free agent.
