Cuban: Shaq deal might never happen

TROPHY CLUB - It has become increasingly clear to owner Mark Cuban that the Los Angeles Lakers will not trade Shaquille O'Neal to the Mavericks unless Dirk Nowitzki is included in the deal.
But, depending on the circumstances, Cuban isn't so sure he'll trade for O'Neal if Nowitzki isn't included in the deal.
"We'll have to take a look at it," Cuban said. "But it just depends on which players [are involved]."
Like many local fans, Cuban isn't too keen on the idea of breaking up the Mavs' combination of Steve Nash, Michael Finley and Nowitzki. He also doesn't want to lose rookie Devin Harris and second-year players Josh Howard and Marquis Daniels.
"We think we've got the Big Three, which is a great nucleus for now," Cuban said. "And we think we've got the next Big Three with Josh and Marquis and Devin.
"Anything is possible, but we really like the group of guys that we have now. We've got a young nucleus and an experienced nucleus, and that's a great combination."
Whether Cuban, speaking at Finley's third annual Make-A-Wish Celebrity Golf Tournament at the Club at Trophy Club on Monday, was playing spin-doctor is not known. But one thing is for sure -- he's adamant about not wanting to trade Nowitzki.
And that includes any package to dump Nowitzki to acquire O'Neal, or Tracy McGrady, the Orlando Magic guard who also has been linked to the Mavs in trade talks.
"It's a different world financially right now, but there's only one Shaq, and there's only one Tracy McGrady, and there's only one Dirk," Cuban said. "Those are very, very special top-five, top-tier players."
On June 18, O'Neal demanded a trade from the Lakers. About the same time, McGrady talked about wanting to get traded to the Mavericks. That prompted Cuban to call both the Lakers and the Magic.
"We said, 'Hey, we're interested, and if there's something that you think will work, give us a call,' " Cuban said. "And our phone's not ringing."
While it appears as though McGrady will be traded to Houston, O'Neal seems to be destined for Dallas. Or is he?
"I'm willing to accept the salary," Cuban said. "It's not going to be cheap in either case, but those are the type of players that I said that I'm willing to pay for."
In the case of O'Neal, Cuban believes the Mavs are operating from a position of strength, since it's the Lakers' superstar who wants out of LA.
"The difference is we don't have to do anything," Cuban said. "We put in our call, just like every other team, and if something happens, they'll call us.
"Or if they're going to make something happen, they'll call us. We'll see if the phone rings."
