Chicago White Sox vs. Detroit Tigers (MLB)
Jun 11, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

Play:Chicago White Sox

Welcome to 2008's version of the most surprising team in baseball. The White Sox are 37-27 and in first place in the AL Central Division by a whopping 6 1/2 games. They have a great record at home (20-9), but can also hold their own on the road. The Sox are completely healthy right now (no injuries reported on the web site currently) and playing with a level of intensity that few teams in the league can match. In other words, they're pretty much the polar opposite of the Detroit Tigers. Detroit has a slew of injuries, the latest being the loss of one-time ace righthander Jeremy Bonderman to elbow surgery for the entire remainder of the season. Regular DH Gary Sheffield is also out with an oblique injury and the remaining squad is playing with anything but intensity it seems. If there's any good news, it may be that current ace righthander (and tonight's starter) Justin Verlander has pitched much better of late after getting off to a disasterous start to the '08 campaign. But Verlander has very little to show for his improved form as he is 0-2 (with a 3.43 ERA) over his last 3 outings, and during that time the Tigers are winless as well at 0-3. Chicago is 19-8 in its last 27 games and 23-10 in its last 33 meetings in Detroit. Take the Sox. As always, good luck...AL

SPORT: Major League Baseball Picks
PICK: Cleveland Indians

REASON FOR PICK: Play On: Cleveland w/Byrd vs Blackburn.
Note: When the Tribe takes on Nick Blackburn and the Twins at Progressive Field Wednesday night they will send Paul Byrd to the mound knowing his 2.90 ERA at home this season if a full 3 runs better than his 5.95 road ERA.

On the flip side, Blackburn's 6.96 road ERA if a full 4 runs worse than his 2.90 home ERA this year. Look for the Indians to improve to 8-2 at home on Wednesdays here tonight.

We recommend a 1-unit play on Cleveland with Byrd vs. Blackburn.

Matchup: San Francisco Giants vs. Colorado Rockies

Selection: San Francisco Giants (-125)

Explanation: We will side with the San Francisco Giants as they face-off against the Colorado Rockies in Wednesday's MLB contest.

The San Francisco Giants will use starting pitcher Tim Lincecum. Tim Lincecum has pitched well this entire season. In fact, Tim Lincecum is 8-1 with a 2.15 ERA. In addition, Tim Lincecum has a 2.11 ERA in his last 3 starts. We see Tim Lincecum pitching another solid game today.

The Colorado Rockies will use starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez. Ubaldo Jimenez has struggled this season. In fact, Ubaldo Jimenez is 1-6 with a 5.43 ERA. In addition, Ubaldo Jimenez has a 8.40 ERA in his last 3 starts. We see Ubaldo Jimenez having another bad game today.

The bottom line, the San Francisco Giants should be able to beat the Colorado Rockies today!

Take the San Francisco Giants

DAVE COKIN

Kyle Davies has had two pretty nice starts for the Royals since his recall from the minors. But I'm not buying this as much more than a momentary blip. Davies lacks the command to succeed regularly in the majors and he's facing a dynamic attack tonight as he tries his luck with the Rangers. Texas is a robust 10-3 when Vicente Padilla takes the mound, and I like the veteran righty to do well enough to register another win tonight. The Rangers are the choice.

A couple of punchless offensive teams meet here. LA is 12th in the NL in runs scored, while the pitiful Padres are dead last. San Diego is a great pitcher's park and both starters have been hot. Dodger righty Chad Billingsley has a 3.00 ERA his last three starts and the team is on a 3-1 under the total run his last 4 starts. San Diego lefty Randy Wolf has a 1.89 ERA his last 3 starts, a perfect 3-0 under the total. In fact, the Padres are 22-13 under the total at home. Play the Dodgers/Padres under the total!

Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers 7:05 PM ET

Chicago White Sox (Vazquez) +105

The Tigers put a halt to the White Sox seven-game winning streak but that is where it ends. Detroit has won back-to-back games only twice since May 23rd and it is 7-10 over that span including a 4-4 record at home. Nothing is going right for the Tigers as they are hitting just .231 over their last 10 games including a mere .217 against right-handed pitching. The pitching had not fared much better as has been the case all season as Detroit has an ERA of 4.80 including 5.00 from the starters. That is 2nd worst in the A.L.

Chicago has taken control of the American League Central as it has built a 6.5-game lead over Minnesota thanks to the recent four-game sweep of the Twins. After all of the complaining that was done about their offense, the White Sox are killing the ball, averaging 8.1 rpg during the recent 7-1 stretch. They are now a game under .500 on the road but with Detroit a game under .500 at home, that losing record makes no difference. Chicago has won 11 of the last 14 meetings in Detroit.

After a horrendous start, Justin Verlander has shown some great improvements but even with him pitching great cannot get the Tigers some wins. He has a 5.05 ERA on the season including 4.56 at home but it is the record that is really disturbing. Detroit is 2-11 in his 13 starts including 2-6 in his eight home outings. The recent stretch includes losses in seven of his last eight and four of his last five at home. He was shelled by Chicago already once this season and is now 1-6 with a 6.14 ERA in 10 lifetime starts.

Javier Vazquez is coming off a below average outing against the Twins but that has been a rarity this season. He was coming off four straight quality starts and you have to go all the way back to May 2007 to find back-to-back starts that were both non-quality. He is now 10 for 10 following a non-quality performance since then with Chicago going 6-3 in those games which also includes that suspended game against Baltimore earlier this year. He is 4-0 with a 2.43 ERA in his last four starts against Detroit. Play Chicago White Sox 1.5 Units

17 minutes in, you've already got a push at least on the over/under in the soccer game -- 1-1 Portugal/Czech, good game
