MLB teams dealing with major roster turnover

The 2014 major league season has kicked off in earnest - and for several teams, that means the clock is ticking on integrating a handful of new players into their respective lineups.

Whether it's a revamped middle of the order or a retooled starting rotation, these teams look vastly different from a season ago. Whether the offseason facelift leads to success or failure remains to be seen, but credit the clubs in this list for taking a shot at reaching the World Series.

Here are four teams that went through major reconstructive surgery in the offseason:

Miami Marlins

As you might have guessed, the Marlins went into the winter acknowledging that their major league-worst offense needed a major overhaul. So, they went out and upgraded their lineup with the additions of third baseman Casey McGehee, Garrett Jones and Jarrod Saltalamacchia; the trio batted 4-5-6 in the Miami lineup in its season-opening 10-1 win over Colorado. The Marlins also nabbed infielder Rafael Furcal, but he'll begin the season on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

Seattle Mariners

The Mariners may still be the odds-on favorite to finish at the bottom of the American League West, but it won't be for lack of trying. The Mariners made the biggest free-agent splash of the offseason with the signing of second baseman Robinson Cano - and they weren't done there, adding Corey Hart, John Buck, Logan Morrison and Willie Bloomquist while handing the closer job to fireballer Fernando Rodney. Cano is far and away the biggest X-factor here, but the strengthening of several other positions should bode well for the up-and-coming Mariners.

New York Yankees

The Yankees don't often carry their roster over from one year to the next - and 2014 is no exception. The Bronx Bombers bade farewell to Cano, Curtis Granderson, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and a handful of others while adding Japanese hurler Masahiro Tanaka, outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran and catcher Brian McCann. While the influx of talent should help the Yankees contend in the ultra-competitive American League East, they remain the majors' oldest team with an average age north of 31.

Texas Rangers

The Rangers purged their roster more than any American League contender, getting rid of Ian Kinsler, Nelson Cruz, Joe Nathan, A.J. Pierzynski, Matt Garza and others. In to replace them are slugging first baseman Prince Fielder, outfielder Shin-Soo Choo and catcher J.P. Arencibia. Texas has depth and farm system to absorb major personnel losses like this, and Fielder and Choo should do a terrific job replacing the lost offense; the only concern - and it's a major one - is a starting rotation ravaged by injuries.

Game of the Day: Bruins at Red Wings

Boston Bruins at Detroit Red Wings (+129, 5.5)

The rampaging Boston Bruins haven't lost in regulation or on the road in a month and will put both streaks on the line when they visit the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night. The Bruins are closing in on wrapping up the top seed in the Eastern Conference and hold a one-point lead over St. Louis in the race for the Presidents' Trophy. Boston is 15-0-1 since losing to Washington on March 1 and notched its franchise-record ninth straight road victory with a shootout win at Philadelphia on Sunday.

Detroit, which is a potential first-round playoff opponent of the Bruins, could receive a major boost in its bid to reach the postseason for a record 23rd consecutive time with Pavel Datsyuk expected to return to the lineup Wednesday or Friday. The Red Wings own a one-point lead over Columbus for the top wild card in the East despite a string of injuries that has gutted their roster. Detroit has won six of the past seven meetings against the Bruins, including a 6-1 thrashing at home on Nov. 27.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, TSN2, RDS

LINE HISTORY: The line opened with the Red Wings as +129 home dogs. The total is set at 5.5.

INJURY REPORT: Detroit: C Pavel Datsyuk - questionable (knee)

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "We'll see if a perfect 2-0 weekend serves to galvanize a Wings squad that is in desperate need of a boost," says Covers Expert Sean Murphy.

WHY BET THE BRUINS (52-17-6): Patrice Bergeron extended his goal-scoring streak to seven games in Sunday's win - one shy of the club record set by Cam Neely in December 1990. Named the NHL's Second Star of the Week after scoring in all four games, Bergeron also owns an eight-game point streak and is within four goals of his career-best total of 31 set with Boston in 2005-06. Forward Jarome Iginla, named the league's First Star of the Month after scoring 13 goals to push his career mark to 560, is one shy of surpassing Guy Lafleur and moving into a tie with Mike Modano for 23rd place on the all-time list.

WHY BET THE RED WINGS (35-26-14): Detroit has posted back-to-back wins following a three-game losing streak and is looking forward to the return of Datsyuk, who has been sidelined since Feb. 27 with a left knee injury. “He’s one of the best two-way players in the game," goaltender Jimmy Howard said of Datsyuk, who is listed as a game-time decision. "We could definitely use him.” Datsyuk, who said he was encouraged after going through a full practice on Tuesday, has appeared in only five games since Jan. 1 - accumulating one assist - but has registered 15 goals and 18 assists in 39 games this season.

TRENDS:

* Under is 10-4-1 in the last 15 meetings.
* Bruins are 1-6 in the last seven meetings.
* Red Wings are 5-1 in their last six games vs. the Atlantic Division.
* Over is 18-3-5 in Bruins last 26 games vs. the Eastern Conference.

COVERS CONSENSUS: Seventy percent of wagers are on the Bruins -140.
