#501 ORLANDO @ #502 PHILADELPHIA - 7:05 PM
Both teams will be looking to post their first victory of the season when the Orlando Magic visit the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. The Magic were within three points late at Chicago on Tuesday before dropping a 98-90 decision for their fourth straight loss as they work six newcomers into their rotation, including impressive shooting guard Evan Fournier. The 76ers gave unbeaten Houston a tussle before falling 104-93 on Monday and continue to see progress from rookie big man Nerlens Noel.
Noel, who sat out the entire 2013-14 season after knee surgery, recorded 10 points against Houston and had a double-double against Milwaukee in his second NBA game. Orlando will have to contain guard Tony Wroten, who has posted at least 20 points in three of the first four contests. Noel will be tested against Magic center Nikola Vucevic, who has recorded a double-double in every game, while Fournier is averaging 15.8 points.
#503 MIAMI @ #504 CHARLOTTE - 7:05 PM
The Miami Heat look to bounce back from their first loss of the season when they hit the road to face the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday. The Heat were held to just 14 points in the fourth quarter as they fell 108-91 to the Houston Rockets and hope to turn their fortunes around by beating the Hornets for the 17th consecutive time. However, fatigue could play a major role for Miami as it prepares for its fourth game in five nights.
Charlotte has lost three games in a row since beating the Milwaukee Bucks in its season opener. The Hornets are coming off a 100-91 setback to the New Orleans Pelicans and things could go from bad to worse as they aim to snap a seven-game home losing streak to the Heat. Forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist sat out Tuesday's game with bruised ribs, but he could recover in time to give the team a much-needed boost against Miami.
#505 TORONTO @ #506 BOSTON - 7:35 PM
The Boston Celtics fell into too deep a hole to climb all the way out in Dallas on Monday and are hoping to avoid a similar deficit when they host the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday. The Celtics trailed by 31 points against the Mavericks before pulling within a basket in the fourth quarter of a 118-113 setback. The Raptors are trying to prove their 2013-14 Atlantic Division crown was no fluke and picked up their third win Tuesday.
Toronto bounced back from its first loss with a stifling defensive effort Tuesday, holding undermanned Oklahoma City to 36 second-half points in a 100-88 victory. The Raptors shot under 40 percent but still managed to reach the century mark for the fourth time in as many games and have the personnel to play small against Boston. The Celtics made their move against Dallas with a three-guard lineup featuring Rajon Rondo, Avery Bradley and rookie Marcus Smart.
#507 MINNESOTA @ #508 BROOKLYN - 7:35 PM
The Brooklyn Nets look like a different team with Brook Lopez in the starting lineup, and they’ll need his big body Wednesday when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves. Lopez made his season debut Monday against the severely shorthanded Oklahoma City Thunder after missing the first two games with a sprained right foot, the same one he broke last December. He finished with 18 points and six rebounds in the 116-85 victory.
The Timberwolves don’t have Kevin Love manning the key any longer but Nikola Pekovic is still a tough cover for any opposing center. He outplayed Andre Drummond of the Pistons and Joakim Noah of the Bulls in each of the last two games, and the three days off between games should benefit the ankle bursitis that’s bothered him since January. Minnesota is also expected to have power forward Thaddeus Young available after he passed his concussions tests and returned to practice after a scary collision with Chicago guard Jimmy Butler on Saturday.
#509 NEW YORK @ #510 DETROIT - 7:35 PM
The Stan Van Gundy era has gotten off to a slow start in Detroit, and a woeful offensive attack is to blame. Van Gundy's winless Pistons will attempt once again to find rhythm on that end of the floor when they host the New York Knicks on Wednesday. Detroit, which dropped a 102-90 decision against Brooklyn in its home opener Saturday, ranks last in scoring (86.7) and 3-point percentage (21.9) while ranking near the bottom in field-goal percentage (40.2) and free-throw percentage (65.7).
The Pistons might be set up to break out against the Knicks, who will be playing the second half of a back-to-back after a woeful 98-83 setback at home against Washington on Tuesday. Carmelo Anthony shot 8-for-23 from the floor and committed seven turnovers as New York was denied a third straight win. Detroit took two of three meetings in 2013-14 as center Andre Drummond averaged 14 points and 18 rebounds.
#511 INDIANA @ #512 WASHINGTON - 8:05 PM
The surging Washington Wizards get their first chance to get back at the Indiana Pacers for last season's playoff loss when the teams tangle Wednesday night in the nation's capital. The Pacers ousted the Wizards in the Eastern Conference Semifinals last spring but the squads have opened up this season on very different notes. Washington's third straight victory was an impressive 98-83 decision at New York on Tuesday, its fourth win in a row at Madison Square Garden.
The Pacers have dropped three consecutive games after an 87-81 setback against Milwaukee on Tuesday. Their starters combined to shoot 15-for-40 and turn the ball over 13 times as last season's No. 1 seed in the East put forth a weak effort at home against the worst team in the NBA a year ago. Roy Hibbert stood out with 16 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots in the loss.
#513 CHICAGO @ #514 MILWAUKEE - 8:05 PM
The Chicago Bulls managed a shorthanded home win, but now they have to take their next-man-up mentality on the road to face the upstart Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. The Bulls could be without stars Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah for a second straight night. The supporting cast had enough firepower to beat winless Orlando, but the young Bucks are confident after snapping a 16-game road losing streak with an 87-81 win at Indiana on Tuesday.
Newcomer Pau Gasol had a double-double and Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson had big nights to carry the Bulls to a 98-90 win over the Magic, and they're prepared to play bigger roles in the second half of the back-to-back. "It was a good team win," Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau told reporters. "We can't feel too good about it. We have to be ready for (Wednesday) night." After ending their road skid, the Bucks aim to stop another streak — they've lost eight straight home games to the Bulls dating to Jan. 8, 2010.
#515 ATLANTA @ #516 SAN ANTONIO - 8:35 PM
The San Antonio Spurs aim for a 17th consecutive home win over the Atlanta Hawks when the teams clash Wednesday. The Spurs have won seven straight and 15 of 16 overall in the series and haven't lost to the Hawks in San Antonio since Feb. 15, 1997. It's a homecoming for Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer, who was an assistant with the Spurs for 19 years before taking over in Atlanta last season.
The Hawks are aiming for their first road win of the season but are coming off a wire-to-wire 102-92 victory over Indiana. Conversely, the Spurs are 1-0 at home after a 101-100 win over Dallas on opening night but are looking to rebound from a 94-89 defeat at Phoenix last time out. Despite San Antonio's sluggish start, Atlanta views the early matchup as a valuable measuring stick. "They're the defending champs," Hawks center Al Horford told reporters. "We obviously still have a lot of things we need to work on, but it's a good test for us to see where we're at as a team.
#517 MEMPHIS @ #518 PHOENIX - 9:05 PM
Zach Randolph has a double-double in all four games and the Memphis Grizzlies have yet to suffer a loss as they visit the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday. The Grizzlies are 4-0 for the first time in franchise history and are allowing a league-low 85 points per game. Phoenix posted a road win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday and begins a five-game homestand with the contest against the Grizzlies.
Memphis is one of three NBA teams that has yet to suffer a loss, and the play of Randolph and center Marc Gasol has been a big factor. Randolph is averaging 18.5 points and 12.3 rebounds, while Gasol has topped 20 points three times and is averaging 22.5 points. The Suns had three players scored more than 20 points in the 112-106 win over the Lakers – Gerald Green (26), Markieff Morris (23) and Isaiah Thomas (22).
#519 CLEVELAND @ #520 UTAH - 9:05 PM
The Cleveland Cavaliers looked like a team not used to playing with each other in a 19-point loss at Portland on Tuesday. LeBron James and the Cavaliers will try to quickly turn the page when they visit the Utah Jazz on Wednesday. Cleveland hit its first 10 field-goal attempts against the Trail Blazers before going 21-of-75 the rest of the way and getting run off the court in falling to 1-2.
The Jazz have dropped three of their first four and are enduring a brutal schedule to begin the campaign with five of the first six games against teams with winning records from last year – the James-less Cavaliers of 2013-14 being the lone exception. “Some of these games, you’ve got to see them as opportunities to improve,” Utah coach Quin Snyder told reporters. “Every time we come out against one of these teams that people are picking in the NBA Finals, it’s a good chance to help us measure ourselves in where we are.” The Cavaliers did not look much like title contenders against Portland, and James has looked out-of-sync in two of the first three games.
#521 DENVER @ #522 SACRAMENTO - 10:05 PM
The Denver Nuggets must be wondering what it’ll take to earn a victory after they were stung by two straight hard-to-swallow losses heading into their matchup Wednesday night against the host Sacramento Kings. The Nuggets fell to the visiting Kings on Monday night, two days after they couldn’t take advantage of an injury-depleted Thunder team and lost by double digits. The Kings, meanwhile, are off to their first 3-1 start since 2010.
Getting small forward Wilson Chandler on track would be a good start for Denver. He’s shooting 8-for-33 through the first three games, including 2-of-17 from long range. Denver’s third-leading scorer last season showed flashes of his ability in Monday’s loss to the Kings, scoring seven points in a 94-second span midway through the fourth quarter, but Chandler then missed his final three field-goal attempts to douse the comeback. Sacramento’s hot start is even more impressive considering the lack of production it’s getting from starting shooting guard Ben McLemore and his rookie backup Nik Stauskas, who picked up three fouls in only two minutes of action Monday.
#523 LA CLIPPERS @ #524 GOLDEN STATE - 10:35 PM
The Los Angeles Clippers ousted Golden State from the playoffs last spring and the Warriors look to remain perfect this season when the rivals meet on Wednesday. Golden State’s 3-0 start is the best since the franchise won five straight games to open the 1994-95 season and forward David Lee (hamstring) is expected to make his season debut against Los Angeles. The Clippers improved to 3-1 when Blake Griffin scored 31 points and Chris Paul delivered a triple-double in Monday’s win over Utah.
Los Angeles lost to Sacramento on Sunday and had a 13-point halftime lead before the letting the Jazz back in the game, which irritated Paul. “We have to get that killer mentality and we have to put teams away,” Paul told reporters. “Teams are way too good in his league, especially now, and they aren’t going to give up.” The Warriors routed the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers to start the campaign and then delivered an impressive road win in Portland on Sunday.
