#701 DETROIT @ #702 WASHINGTON - 7:05 PM
The Washington Wizards look to continue their stellar start to the season when they host the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday. The Wizards have won five out of their last six games, including a 97-90 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday, and share top spot in the Southeast Division standings with the Miami Heat. Washington begins a four-game homestand and hopes to avenge a 104-98 loss to the Pistons in the last meeting between the teams on Jan. 18.
Detroit began its four-game road trip with a 102-91 loss to the Chicago Bulls and has now dropped two straight after reeling off its first two wins of the season last week. The Pistons are 0-3 on the road, but have had some success at the Verizon Center in recent years, emerging victorious in four of their last five visits. "It's the little things we need to get better at," power forward Greg Monroe told reporters. "We know what we're capable of, we just have to do it for a full game."
•ABOUT THE PISTONS (2-5 SU, 0-7-0 ATS): Small forward Josh Smith had one of his best games of the season after collecting a team-high 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds and three blocks in the loss to the Bulls. Center Andre Drummond struggled mightily on the offensive end of the floor against Chicago, going 0-of-5, but grabbed 12 rebounds and has hauled in 10 or more in four straight games. Detroit is 29th in the league in points per game (91.9) and has failed to shoot 50 percent or more from the field or top the 100-point mark this season.
•ABOUT THE WIZARDS (5-2 SU, 4-3-0 ATS): Power forward Nene recorded 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists while point guard John Wall added a team-high 18 points in the win over the Pacers. Washington has averaged 49.5 rebounds in its last two games, but faces a stiff test against the Pistons, who are third in the NBA with 46.3 boards per game. "Big team, probably the biggest team we will face with Monroe, Smith and Drummond starting together again," coach Randy Wittman told reporters. "That's a formidable front line and one of the best rebounding teams in the league."
#703 UTAH @ #704 ATLANTA - 7:35 PM
A key member of the Utah Jazz will be making a rare homecoming appearance for the second consecutive game when the team plays at the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. Two nights after Gordon Hayward made his return to Indianapolis to face the Pacers, forward Derrick Favors returns to the city where he was born and later starred at South Atlanta High School. Favors led the team a state championship during his senior year in 2009, and was MVP of the McDonald’s All-American game that year.
Two members of the Hawks should also have motivation to play well against Utah. Atlanta forward Paul Millsap was drafted in the second round by the Jazz in 2005 and spent his first seven seasons in Utah before the organization let him walk in July 2013 so it could make room in the starting lineup for Favors, and shooting guard Kyle Korver spent 2 ½ seasons in Utah. Korver and Millsap combined for 49 points when these teams last met in March.
•ABOUT THE JAZZ (3-5 SU, 4-4-0 ATS): Rudy Gobert has seen a significant increase in minutes over his rookie season and his skills will be needed when starting center Enes Kanter can’t get it going. Gobert had three points, five rebounds and a block in 13 minutes against the Pacers, and Friday had four blocks in 23 minutes against the Mavericks. Gobert won’t make anyone forget about legendary Jazz shot-blocker Mark Eaton, but he does bring a noticeable element to the game.
•ABOUT THE HAWKS (3-3 SU, 3-3-0 ATS): DeMarre Carroll, who has also spent time with the Jazz, is doubtful to play after suffering a strained groin in Monday’s win against the Knicks. Carroll has started all six previous games, averaging 12 points and 6.3 rebounds. Look for Atlanta guard Dennis Schroder to continue elevating his offensive game as he has scored a career-high point total in each of the last two games.
#705 OKLAHOMA CITY @ #706 BOSTON - 7:35 PM
Rajon Rondo will be back in action Wednesday when he leads the Boston Celtics into a matchup at home with Oklahoma City. Rondo missed his team's 106-101 win at Chicago on Saturday after having screws removed from his surgically repaired left hand, a procedure that was expected to take place later in the season but initiated after the speedy point guard had some soreness. Without their floor general, the Celtics shot 51.9 percent and got seven players in double figures in the win over Chicago.
The Thunder also took another step toward a return to health when they dressed 10 players for the first time this season in an 85-78 loss at Milwaukee on Tuesday. The increased depth did little to improve the club's offensive woes, as Oklahoma City shot 33.3 percent overall and was held to just 14 fourth-quarter points in falling to 0-5 on the road. Reggie Jackson continued to put the injury-plagued unit on his shoulders with a season-high 29 points.
•ABOUT THE THUNDER (2-6 SU, 4-4-0 ATS): The return of shooting guard Anthony Morrow from a sprained MCL allowed Oklahoma City to play with a bit more depth against Milwaukee, and there may be more comebacks on the horizon. Forward Perry Jones and guard Andre Roberson, both out for three games with knee and foot ailments, respectively, continue to be listed as day-to-day. Morrow scored 10 points in 14 minutes while hitting his only 3-point try at Milwaukee and could provide a boost from the perimeter for a team that entered Tuesday ranked 23rd with a 31.9 percent mark from beyond the arc.
•ABOUT THE CELTICS (3-3 SU, 3-3-0 ATS): The hot-shooting effort against Chicago is part of an early turnaround for one of the league's worst offensive units a season ago. Boston, which ranked 28th overall with a 43.5 percent mark from the floor in 2013-14, entered Tuesday ranked second in the NBA in scoring (106.3) and fifth in shooting (47.4) and they've done it with balance, with four players averaging between 19.7 and 13.3 points. Rondo is not among that quartet but owns the early NBA lead in assists (11.2).
#707 INDIANA @ #708 MIAMI - 7:35 PM
It was a marquee event last season when the Indiana Pacers and the Miami Heat collided while battling for Eastern Conference supremacy. Only the Heat look like legitimate contenders in the early going and will try to take advantage of the visiting Pacers on Wednesday. LeBron James is gone to Cleveland but Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade are playing better than ever and Luol Deng is getting more comfortable in Miami.
While the Heat have barely missed a beat without their leading scorer, Indiana is having a more difficult time working through a slew of injuries, the most devastating being to All-Star Paul George. The Pacers snapped a six-game slide with a 97-86 home victory over the Utah Jazz on Monday as Roy Hibbert stepped up and played like a star with 29 points. Hibbert was limited to 10.8 points on 41.5 percent shooting as Indiana lost to Miami in six games in the Eastern Conference finals last spring.
•ABOUT THE PACERS (2-6 SU, 5-3-0 ATS): The one positive to all the injuries is the door it opens for other players, and A.J. Price stepped up with 22 points in Monday’s triumph. "(Price) obviously gave us a big-time lift tonight,” Indiana coach Frank Vogel told reporters. “He was great. He’s an NBA player. I don’t know why he’s bouncing around. To perform like he performed tonight shows his value." Price played for the Pacers from 2009-12 and went through Washington, Minnesota and Cleveland before being brought back to Indiana thanks to a hardship waiver granted by the league in the wake of all the injuries.
•ABOUT THE HEAT (5-2 SU, 5-2-0 ATS): Deng scored a season-high 30 points in Sunday’s 105-96 win at the Dallas Mavericks and is 19-of-28 from the field in the last two games. “We’re still getting better as a team, and I think there is still a lot to figure out, but in the game plan (against Dallas) they doubled Bosh and (Wade), and we did a good job of moving the ball,” Deng told reporters. “We had a lot of open jumpers” After averaging 90 points in back-to-back losses last week, Miami has put up 103.5 while holding opponents to 94 in back-to-back wins.
#709 ORLANDO @ #710 NEW YORK - 7:35 PM
The pressure is beginning to build on the New York Knicks, who have yet to score 100 points in a game and have dropped five straight contests after a promising start. The Knicks look to start moving forward again, as they continue to learn first-year coach Derek Fisher’s new system, when the Orlando Magic visit Wednesday. The Magic might be the right opponent at the right time after they let an 11-point lead get away in the fourth quarter during a 104-100 loss at Toronto on Tuesday.
“It’s very frustrating because we deserved to win that one,” Orlando guard Evan Fournier told reporters Tuesday after the Magic’s 30th loss in their last 32 road games. Carmelo Anthony is shooting just under 34 percent during the Knicks’ losing streak and he isn’t getting much help on a team that has plummeted to last in the league in scoring (91.1). “We got to win games; that’s it,” Knicks guard Iman Shumpert told the New York Post. “It’s discouraging.”
•ABOUT THE MAGIC (2-6 SU, 4-4-0 ATS): There were plenty of positives to take out of the loss Tuesday in which the Magic made 12-of-25 from 3-point range and led the Eastern Conference’s top team with 2:20 left. Newcomers Channing Frye (19) and Fournier (24) also registered their season high in scoring while Tobias Harris notched his second double-double in three games. Orlando center Nikola Vucevic, who averaging 18.5 points and 11.8 rebounds, is shooting 56.5 percent over the last four games and will be a tough matchup for the Knicks.
•ABOUT THE KNICKS (2-6 SU, 2-6-0 ATS): Anthony is averaging 20.3 points, more than seven below his mark from 2013-14, and Shumpert (14.3) is the only other player producing more than 11.3 for the Knicks. New York has been forced to go with 22-year-old at point guard Shane Larkin with Jose Calderon out due to a calf injury, and the loss of center Andrea Bargnani (hamstring) has not helped the offense, either. Tim Hardaway Jr. is one Knick who has raised his game of late, averaging 16.5 in his last four contests after a slow start.
#711 LA LAKERS @ #712 NEW ORLEANS - 8:05 PM
Anthony Davis is off to an outstanding start and the New Orleans power forward looks to record his fourth straight double-double when the Pelicans host the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. Davis is averaging 24.8 points, 13 rebounds and 4.2 blocked shots and is providing hope that New Orleans can make a run at a playoff spot. He averaged 25 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots against the Lakers last season.
Los Angeles has the worst record in the Western Conference after losing to the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday. The Lakers trailed by 17 points in the fourth quarter and used an 18-4 run to make it close before dropping to 0-3 on the road. Los Angeles has topped 100 points in five consecutive games but a leaky defense has been an issue as the Lakers have only held one of seven opponents below 100.
•ABOUT THE LAKERS (1-6 SU, 2-3-2 ATS): Guard Kobe Bryant had 28 points on 10-of-26 shooting against Memphis and has strung together six straight 20-point outings. Bryant has shot less than 40 percent in three straight games and his 13th miss against the Grizzlies elevated him past former Boston standout John Havlicek (13,417) for most missed shots in NBA history. Power forward Jordan Hill had 13 points and 14 rebounds for his second double-double in three games and is averaging 14.1 points and 9.4 rebounds.
•ABOUT THE PELICANS (3-3 SU, 3-3-0 ATS): Davis received some help in Monday’s loss to Cleveland as forward Ryan Anderson scored a season-best 32 points, 23 of them coming in the first half of the 118-111 loss. Anderson made 11-of-19 shots and matched his career high of eight 3-point baskets, but he was very disappointed in the 118 points he and his teammates allowed. “Our defense really struggled in the second half – in the first half we were just making shots to get through the poor defense, but we just need to be better,” Anderson told reporters. “All season so far we’ve kind of prided ourselves on our defense and we had a letdown.”
#713 PORTLAND @ #714 DENVER - 9:05 PM
The Denver Nuggets attempt to halt a five-game slide when they host the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday. One of Denver’s losses came against Portland on Sunday, when it succumbed 116-100 as the Trail Blazers knocked down 16 3-point baskets. Portland recovered from a 23-point deficit to post a 102-100 victory over Charlotte on Tuesday as point guard Damian Lillard had 29 points and seven assists and power forward LaMarcus Aldridge had 25 points and 14 rebounds.
Nuggets power forward Kenneth Faried promises a much-tougher effort in the rematch. “I think Wednesday we’re going to be a lot more electrified because we’re tired of losing,” Faried said. “We’re going to do everything in our power to go out there and fight, claw, tooth and nail to get the win. If we can get over this hump we can get out of this drought.” The Trail Blazers have lost both their road games – by nine points to Sacramento and four to the Los Angeles Clippers.
•ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (5-3 SU, 5-2-1 ATS): Small forward Nicolas Batum will miss his second straight game but said prior to Tuesday’s game against Charlotte that he was relieved that an MRI exam displayed there is no significant damage in his injured right knee. “We thought it was going to be worse than that when that happened,” Batum told reporters. “The first thing when the doctor saw that, yeah, they were pretty worried. It’s scary.” Batum didn’t travel to Denver with the team and hopes to return for Monday’s home game against the New Orleans Pelicans.
•ABOUT THE NUGGETS (1-5 SU, 1-5-0 ATS): Denver hasn’t played since Sunday’s loss to Portland, which has given the players and coach Brian Shaw plenty of time to think about it. “I did feel better about this game,” Shaw told reporters. “There are no moral victories but I did feel better with the rotation, with the effort that our guys gave. So we just have to keep chipping away to try and stop the bleeding.” The Nuggets have lost by an average of 12.6 points during their slide, the worst being a 131-109 loss at Sacramento on Nov. 5.
#715 BROOKLYN @ #716 PHOENIX - 9:05 PM
The Phoenix Suns are trying out a three-point guard approach and Goran Dragic, Eric Bledsoe and Isaiah Thomas have each had their moments. The Suns will need all three to stop a resurgent Deron Williams when Phoenix hosts the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday. Williams is the reigning Eastern Conference Player of the Week after putting up 20.8 points and seven assists in four games last week while leading the Nets to three wins in four games.
The Suns gave up 28 points to another top point guard, Stephen Curry, on Sunday but also forced him into 10 turnovers as the Suns ended Golden State’s undefeated run 107-95. “We’re just harping on that same activity, not letting our offense dictate your defense,” Phoenix coach Jeff Hornacek told reporters. “You’ve got to play good defense no matter what’s going on on offense.” Brooklyn is leaning on its defense as well and has held opponents under 100 points in each of the last five contests.
•ABOUT THE NETS (4-2 SU, 3-3-0 ATS): Williams has been plagued by injuries the last two seasons but had surgery on both ankles over the offseason and is now averaging 38.2 minutes as an asset at both ends of the floor. Brook Lopez is healthy as well but found himself off the floor for the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 104-96 win over Orlando due to his lack of effectiveness at the defensive end. "I want him to guard, simple as that,” Nets coach Lionel Hollins told reporters of Lopez. “Get on him."
•ABOUT THE SUNS (4-3 SU, 3-3-1 ATS): Phoenix built more depth into the roster with the addition of Thomas, and his combination with fellow reserve Gerald Green is what pushed the Suns over the top on Sunday. The two combined to score 31 points in the fourth quarter as Phoenix outscored the Warriors 36-16 in the final period. "That first unit made that defensive push at the third quarter and got us back in the game," Thomas told reporters. "Then we made plays. We got stops. We made shots and played with a lot of energy. The fans got us going."
#717 HOUSTON @ #718 MINNESOTA - 10:05 PM
The Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves will be without their starting point guards when they meet Wednesday in Mexico City. Ricky Rubio suffered a severely sprained left ankle in Minnesota’s loss to the Orlando Magic on Friday and could be sidelined up to two months. Patrick Beverley of Houston is battling a hamstring strain and will be re-evaluated Friday.
The Rockets are also expected to be without starting power forward Terrence Jones, who has missed the last three games with a right leg contusion and is also scheduled to be reevaluated later this week. The good news is All-Star center Dwight Howard returned to practice Monday after missing Saturday’s loss against the Warriors with flu-like symptoms. Timberwolves guard Kevin Martin should be motivated to play well against the Rockets, a team that sent him to Oklahoma City two years ago in a deal that brought James Harden to Houston.
•ABOUT THE ROCKETS (6-1 SU, 5-1-1 ATS): Houston leads the league with an average of 13 made 3-pointers a game this season, leaving Portland a distant second at 10.4. Trevor Ariza, in his second stint with the Rockets after averaging a career-best 14.9 points with the organization in 2009-10, is averaging 6.6 attempts a game from beyond the arc and has connected on 47.8 percent of his tries. He has cooled off significantly the last two gamesby missing on 10 of 11 attempts from long range.
•ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (2-4 SU, 4-2-0 ATS): Minnesota became the first NBA team in nine years to start two teenagers when they sent Zach LaVine onto the floor with fellow 19-year-old rookie Andrew Wiggins in Saturday’s loss to Miami. LaVine faces a tall order trying to fill Rubio’s shoes, as he started just one game at UCLA last season before declaring for the NBA Draft. The Timberwolves didn’t have much success with their rookie out of UCLA last season, as Shabazz Muhammad played so poorly he was sent to the D-League for a stretch.
