World Cup Game of the Day: Belgium vs. USA

Belgium vs. USA (+100, +320, Draw +250)

Two teams unfamiliar with each other face off Tuesday at Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador when Group H winner Belgium faces off against the plucky Americans. The U.S. survived the Group of Death despite a narrow loss to Germany in its final Group G match, and faces a Belgian side that allowed just one goal against in its three matches but is dealing with injury woes. The teams haven't met in World Cup play since 1930, when the U.S. prevailed 3-0.

Belgium has been a model of consistency so far in the tournament, registering three straight one-goal victories behind strong fundamental play and a conservative but effective offense. And while pundits have labeled the style of play as unexciting, Belgian coach Marc Wilmots is fine with that. "What counts - always - is to win and advance," he said. "Every error is paid cash at the tiller. So what does 'the most beautiful football' mean? You tell me."

TV: 4 p.m. ET, ESPN

WORLD RANKINGS: Belgium: No. 11; USA: No. 13.

INJURY REPORT: Belgium: MF Steven Defour will miss the match after being suspended for a red card against South Korea; D Anthony Vanden Borre is out after suffering a broken ankle against South Korea; D Vincent Kompany is nursing a groin injury and is considered doubtful; D Thomas Vermaelen is doubtful with a hamstring injury . USA: F Jozy Altidore is recovering from a hamstring injury suffered in the opener but is training on his own and may appear in Tuesdays game.

WHAT THE SHARPS SAY: "Belgium won all three group games, however these were against some of the weakest teams in the tournament and the Belgian Golden Generation has failed to impress thus far. Do we give the USA a chance in this game? Of course we do. USA are one of the hardest working teams in this tournament." Covers Expert Footy Tipster

WHAT THE BOOKS SAY: "By far our biggest bet game of the tournament so far. Having the USA make it in to the knockout stage is a big win for us in terms of volume. With the action so far, our customers are backing Team USA with 80 percent of the action. As for the 2.5 goal total, it is seeing good two way action with just 69 percent of the action on the over." Michael Stewart, CarbonSports.ag.

ABOUT BELGIUM: As well as the Belgians played defensively in their three group victories, they'll be hard-pressed to match that with three key defenders hobbled. The loss of Kompany - who looked sensational in the two games for which he was healthy - would be a major blow, but Wilmots doesn't sound optimistic that his team captain will take the field against the Americans. "We will have to assess it (Monday), how he moves," Wilmots told a throng of reporters. "I cannot play him if he is 80 percent only."

ABOUT USA: The key to the Americans' success or failure in their round-of-16 match may very well be their ability to deal with Belgium's precise crosses. Both Portugal goals in its stunning 2-2 tie with the U.S. came via well-placed crosses that the American side couldn't defend, and that could cause problems given that Belgium (60 percent) has won a larger percentage of its aerial battles than the U.S. (50 percent). The return of Altidore, who missed the previous two games, would give the Americans a significant boost up front.

TRENDS:

* Belgium has beaten the U.S. in each of their four meetings since their World Cup match, shutting out the Americans three times.
* The Americans had the second-worst possession rate (39 percent) of any team in the group stage.
* Belgium's last six World Cup goals have come in the final 20 minutes of play.
* The U.S has allowed at least one goal in 16 consecutive matches against European opponents.

Argentina face Switzerland on Tuesday in another mouth-watering round of 16 clash. The South American nations have fared well so far with both Colombia and hosts Brazil securing a place in the Quarter-finals, and another one will compete here against the side ranked 6th in the world.

Lionel Messi has led Argentina to three successive victories; putting himself in contention for the Golden Boot whilst enforcing a winning mentality in the side. Wins against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran and most recently Nigeria ensured the CONCACAF nation finished top of Group F and avoided the free-scoring French side in the round of 16.

They will however face a Switzerland side that have had three entirely different results. A last-gasp winner against Ecuador showed resilience and determination; coming back from 1-0 down to take all three points. They then struggled against France, going 5-0 down in 73 minutes before showing spirit and reducing the deficit to 5-2. And in their final group game, Bayern Munich playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri scored a wonderful hat-trick, which put them in 2nd place above Ecuador and set up the tie with Argentina.

Argentina are the clear favorites on the 1X2 with Pinnacle Sports, and are currently being offered at 1.556 to win the match; an implied probability of 64.27%. Bettors can get odds of 7.540 on the underdogs Switzerland, a 13.26% chance of an upset.

While both sides have looked susceptible when defending, both are capable of scoring from all areas of the pitch and odds of 2.000 are available on OVER 2.5 and 3 goals.

World Cup start time helps books build bigger handle on USA-Belgium
By JASON LOGAN

Sportsbooks in Nevada and those online welcoming U.S. customers are bracing for what they’re calling “the biggest bet game” of the 2014 World Cup when the United States faces Belgium in the Round of 16 Tuesday.

The United States’ success in Brazil has been a boom for sportsbooks thanks in large part to a growing U.S. soccer market that has cheered – and bet – the USMNT through the group stage and into this elimination showdown.

The Americans come into Tuesday’s action priced as +190 underdogs to advance (Belgium -220) and are +360 pups in the 90-minute odds (Belgium -115, Draw +240), according to the LVH Superbook in Las Vegas. Online, at U.S.-facing book CarbonSports.ag, the USMNT is set as a +260 underdog for the 90-minute market, with Belgium at +110 and a Draw set at +250.

“The action has been really good, like the rest of the USA games,” Michael Stewart of CarbonSports.ag, told Covers Monday morning. “With our customer base, the USA games are going to see way more action than the other matchups.”

The United States’ opening contests in Group G created a “Super Bowl-like atmosphere” in Nevada casinos, where books were flooded with flag-waving bettors backing the Red, White and Blue. According to Las Vegas bookmakers, the USA drew 50 percent more money than its most recent opponent Germany last Thursday.

Tuesday’s match with Belgium is not only expected to draw more money than the United States' final group game due to the do-or-die elimination format but also due to the 4 p.m. ET start time. The United States’ 1-0 loss to Germany was a 12 p.m. ET kickoff, making for a very early morning – 9 a.m. – for Las Vegas soccer bettors. With the Round of 16 contest starting at 1 p.m. in Sin City, books have much more time to build a big handle.

“The handle should be enormous… with the later start time the handle will increase,” Ed Salmons, assistant manager at the LVH Superbook, tells Covers. “It’s hard to say right now (what the increase will be) since 90 percent of the money bet will come in on game day.”

Online books are also expecting a huge spike in action come Tuesday and say that while the later start doesn’t have as much impact with them as it does with Nevada books, they estimate the 4 p.m. ET kickoff will increase the handle on USA-Belgium by 10 percent.

“I would have to say this is our biggest bet game so far and we still have another day before the game, so the action is still coming in and will right through the game with our live betting markets,” says Stewart.

Currently, the LVH Superbook is dealing the United States at 50/1 to win the World Cup while Belgium comes into Tuesday priced at 20/1.

Top Over team in action Tuesday
Andrew Avery

Two teams advanced from the group stage with perfect Over/Under records: Colombia and Switzerland. Both sides were 3-0 O/U heading into the knockout phase and following Colombia's 2-0 win, only Switzerland is left unblemished for Over bettors.

Switzerland's backline looked like, ahem, Swiss cheese versus the French, allowing five goals. But they can score as well. Xherdan Shaqiri scored one of two hattricks in the group stage and they scored seven in their first three matches.

The Swiss take on Argentina Tuesday and Pinnacle Sports has set the goal total market at 2.5 and 3 goals. The Over is currently +110 and the Under is -121.

Jays costing bettors, but Overs cashing on Canada Day

The Rogers Centre will be a sea of red and white Tuesday with the sold-out home crowd celebrating Canada Day. The Toronto Blue Jays, who will sport their special red July 1 uniforms, take on the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 of a two-game set.

The Blue Jays haven’t been at their best on Canada’s birthday in recent years. In fact, they’ve lost three of their last four July 1 matchups heading into Tuesday’s contest.

Since 1999, Toronto is 6-9 on Canada Day, but do sport a winning 4-3 record at home. If you wagered $100 on each of those 15 games, you’d be down -$166.63 and trading in your ice-cold Moosehead Cracked Canoe for a warm case of Laker Lager your uncle found in his old boat.

The Jays have been home for the holiday the past three seasons, defeating the Detroit Tigers 8-3 last year, losing 10-6 to the Los Angeles Angels in 2012 and 7-6 to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2011. All three of those games played over the total.

Toronto is 8-7 over/under on July 1 (4-3 over/under at home) and has actually outscored opponents 80-70 over those 15 games, with an average of 10 combined runs in those contests.

Drew Hutchison (5-6, 4.00 ERA) gets the call for Canada Day, coming off a loss in a six inning effort versus the New York Yankees his last time out. The Blue Jays are just 1-3 in his last four starts and 1-4 Over/Under over his last five. He matches pitches with Brewers righty Marco Estrada (7-4, 5.06 ERA, 11-4-1 O/U). The O/U is 7-0 in Estrada's previous seven starts.

Toronto is just 3-6 as a moneyline favorite on Canada Day since 1999, with a 3-3 mark as an underdog.

Tuesday's World Cup Tips
By Toby Maxtone-Smith

Argentina vs. Switzerland (ESPN, 12:00 p.m. ET)

The last semi-finalist at Brazil 2014 will be made up from one of Argentina, Switzerland, Belgium and USA. Argentina are the strong favourites to make it to the semis, but they will face strong competition.

The first game of the day sees Argentina face Switzerland at the Arena Corinthians in São Paulo. Argentina have been dealt such a kind draw. First they were put in an easy group - they won all three games without ever really convincing. Second they were placed into comfortably the easier half of the draw, and third - their games are all played at moderate temperatures, away from the energy sapping heat of the northern venues.

Switzerland edged past Ecuador first up, before being hammered 5-2 by France, having been 5-0 down at one point. Needing to beat Honduras, Ottmar Hitzfeld’s teams duly obliged with a 3-0 win. Xherdan Shaqiri, Switzerland’s star man, grabbed a hat-trick. A winger, he is a powerfully built player with a vicious shot, but he moves around gracefully and is very underused at Bayern Munich. He will trouble Argentina’s suspect defence.

Argentina are the 1/2 favourites to win the match in normal time with sportsbook.ag. Switzerland are 57/10 shots, with a draw 33/10. The best value here would probably be a draw, just given that three of the six last 16 games so far have gone to extra time, with a fourth (Netherlands v Mexico) coming within about two minutes of a draw. Jose Pekerman’s team are 5/21 to qualify, with Switzerland 33/10.

The team that wins the World Cup is often the one that peaks at the right time, and there is lots to suggest Argentina will do this. They will still be full of energy after a favourable draw, and there was an openness in the Swiss defence in the 5-2 loss to France that will have Messi, Higuain, Lavezzi and Di Maria licking their lips in excitement. I just have a feeling Argentina will really pull their finger out now that the tournament has got serious.

In the first goalscorer market, PSG inside-forward Ezequiel Lavezzi looks a fair shout at 5/1. He replaces the injured Sergio Aguero, and he had enough chances after coming on in the 3-2 win over Nigeria to suggest that he could well be on the scoresheet today. He is a relentlessly hard worker and, despite often playing wide for PSG, the natural fluidity of Argentina’s front three means he will often find himself in goalscoring positions.

Top Bet: Ezequiel Lavezzi to score first at 5/1

Belgium vs. United States (ESPN, 4:00 p.m. ET)

The second game of the day is fascinating. It pits a Belgium side that won 3 out of 3 in the group without ever playing that well, against the USA, who qualified as rank outsiders from a tough-looking Group G.

The interesting thing about this match is that, while Belgium are strong favourites to qualify for the quarter-finals at 20/37, with USA 8/5, Belgium are not blessed with more big game experience than Klinsmann’s men, as is often the case with favourites. Belgium were drawn into an easy group, and their attack has looked poor throughout. Romelu Lukaku has been dreadful up front, while talented midfielders like Axel Witsel and Eden Hazard have failed to make a mark so far.

The USA have been great so far: they put in a thrillingly dogged performance to beat Ghana in that crucial opening match, before being very unlucky to draw 2-2 with Portugal in a game where they dominated long periods. There is a real mental strength to this team, and I think that could be the difference.

Certainly Belgium look too short to back at 1/1, with USA at 13/5. It may be best, however, to bear in mind the high number of draws in the knockout stage so far, along with both sides’ good defences, to back USA to qualify, without having to rely on them doing so in 90 minutes at 8/5.

I would not expect many goals. USA do not have the wingers to exploit Belgium’s alarming lack of full-backs, and both sides will inevitably be nervous. The conditions in Salvador, though tempered somewhat by the darkness, will be hot and sticky. Belgium are not a very fluid side, and 10/13 on One or Both Teams Not to Score looks the best shout.

USA showed how good they can be at the back in limiting Germany to only one in the last group game, while Belgium’s centre-back pairing of Vincent Kompany and Daniel van Buyten has looked steady so far. Van Buyten’s pace can catch him out, but the US don’t have great pace in attack, so he shouldn't be too exposed.

Top Bet: One or Both Teams Not to Score at 10/13

USA takes on Belgium Tuesday in Round of 16
By: Brian Graham - StatFox

2014 WORLD CUP SOCCER

BELGIUM vs. UNITED STATES

Kickoff: Tuesday, 4:00 p.m. EDT
Arena Fonte Nova – Salvador, Brazil

Line:
Belgium Even, United States +260, Tie after Regulation +260
Over/Under: 2.5 Goals (Over +120, Under -149)

After surviving group play, the United States opens single-elimination play in the World Cup when they take on a banged-up Belgium squad on Tuesday.

Belgium has won all three of its matches so far, with all victories coming by one goal. They edged Algeria 2-1 and posted back-to-back, 1-0 shutout wins over Russia and South Korea. But these wins came with a price, as several of their key players were hurting as their country seeks their first quarterfinal berth since 1986. Team captain, defender Vincent Kompany, has been bothered by a strained groin and is doubtful to play on Tuesday. Also, Thomas Vermaelen is questionable with an injured hamstring, while right back Anthony Vanden Borre (cracked fibula) and Laurent Ciman (strained abductor) are not expected to suit up. The Americans scored two goals in each of their first two games, but played very conservative with a five-midfielder formation in a 1-0 loss against Germany that still sent them through to this round. Starting striker Jozy Altidore is doubtful to play for the United States because of a left hamstring injury suffered in the World Cup opener versus Ghana. These countries last met in the World Cup back in 1930, a 3-0 U.S. victory, but in the most recent friendly between these teams in 2013, Belgium prevailed 4-2.

Belgium has a pedestrian four goals in three World Cup matches, with the first three of those coming from substitute players (midfielders Marouane Fellaini, Dries Mertens and forward Divock Origi). Starting defender Jan Vertonghen recorded the lone tally versus South Korea at the 78th minute to give his team its third straight win in the tournament. Belgium fired 16 total shots (11 on goal) in that victory, giving them 43 total shots (28 on goal) for the tournament so far. The Red Devils held a possession advantage in each of their first two games, with 65% possession versus Algeria and 53% against Russia, but possessed the ball for only 49% of the time in their most recent match. But they have also been extremely dangerous with their challenges with 45 fouls and four yellow cards issued to midfielders Moussa Dembele and Axel Witsel, and defensemen Toby Alderweireld and Vertonghen. But Belgium's defense remains top-notch, with the only goal allowed this tournament coming off a penalty kick as the result of Vertonghen's silly decision to grab his opponent by the arm in the box. Red Devils goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is one of the better netminders in the world.

The Americans have been led by forward Clint Dempsey, who scored a goal in the first 30 seconds of the tournament opener, broke his nose later that game, and also scored at the 81st minute in the second match against Portugal with what looked to be the game-winner at the time. John Brooks Jr. and Jermaine Jones have the club's other two goals in the World Cup. USA has been outshot twofold in this tournament by a combined total of 54-27, including 26-18 in terms of shots on goal, with the Americans producing just four total shots (1 on goal) against the Germans. USA has generated 11 corner kicks compared to 14 for their opponents in World Cup play. The Americans have also lost the time of possession in all three matches, holding the ball for only 37% of the time versus Germany, 40% of the time against Ghana and 48% of the time versus Portugal. But the United States has been whistled for only 38 fouls (15 in the Germany loss) and four offsides in the World Cup. Their only booked players were Jones picking up a yellow card versus Portugal, and defender Omar Gonzalez and midfielder Kyle Beckerman getting carded against the Germans. But the U.S. has to be confident in the play of goalie Tim Howard, who has made some brilliant saves this tournament, especially versus Portugal, and he also stood tall with eight saves in the loss to Germany.

Argentina vs. Switzerland Betting Preview and Pick
By: Phil Kitromilides

It was three wins from three in the group stages for Argentina without ever really managing to be overly convincing.

Alejandro Sabella's side struggled to varying degrees against Bosnia, Iran and Nigeria but ultimately ended up victorious and a similar pattern may well take shape in Sao Paolo on Tuesday against Switzerland (12 p.m. ET, ESPN).

The Swiss for their part have played some decent stuff and have looked pretty sharp in front of goal, yet naturally will know they are massive underdogs against one of the favorites for the tournament.

The LVH SuperBook offers a victory for Switzerland at +650 while Argentina can be backed at -215 and the draw is available +325.

On the face of it the LVH's odds of -115 for both teams to score looks a little generous especially when considering what has gone before in this competition and the form that both sides are in.

Argentina have looked defensively unstable, conceding one goal to Bosnia, two to Nigeria, and a couple of extremely good chances to Iran which they were unable to take.

Up front there is little doubt that we expect the Albiceleste to score in every match they play but at the back they often look vulnerable and Switzerland can exploit this.

Ottmar Hitzfeld's side have scored in all three of their matches so far, notching seven goals in total and going forward they have genuine quality, more than enough to get on the score sheet at least once and land bettors a nice winner at -115 with the LVH.
